Wiseass :P What i mean is this: WHen someone has some incredibly strong cultural roots, even though they chose to live and exist away from them...is it still something that lies dormant in one person and can be awakened for one reason or another? Unfortunately yes, and the likelihood is well better than average - 23% is overly optimistic. "Give me a child until he is seven and I will give you the man" is the Jesuit motto, alleged to be attributed to Francis Xavier. If you have someone indoctrinated one way or another at a very early age, the patterning goes very deep. I have seen all too many apparently modern, sophisticated people who, under enough pressure, made an atavistic reversion to a truly Dark Ages mindset that reflected their early upbringing. Religions are toxic by nature, and islam in any guise is particularly virulent. If you are willing to bet the ranch that it will remain dormant, go for it; occasionally it works out that way. If, however, she reverts to her roots at some point, you had best buckle up for the ride. Good luck, Winsor

That's not saying much, but point taken.

Bright by your standards, I will grant you. I should have said that doing these things WELL is the domain of other disciplines. Some disciplines do not dumb down; Environmental does not require dumbing down in the first place. Big deal - janitors use organic chemistry every day, as well (various wetting agents, surfactants, solvents, etc.). All things being said, Environmentals are pretty far down the food chain, acedemically. Irony score 10/10

When I was in school, Civil Engineering was treated as the technical equivalent of Special Ed.. Professor Todd, when berating a group of Juniors who had turned in a less than stellar performance in one of his Organic Chemistry exams, told the class that they really weren't cut out for the hard sciences, and should perhaps consider Civil Engineering. Of course, Environmental majors were the ones to whom Civil was akin to Rocket Science. I would not brag about it. Irony score- perfect 10! Too bad organic chemistry is a big part of any environmental engineering curriculum. Fortunately, I have the perfect solution for you. Since you obviously can’t stand those weak minded civil and environmental engineers, you should immediately stop using all buildings, roads and utilities. On behalf of the profession, I apologize for not making things good enough for you. Then you should simply move somewhere where there are none (or little) of those. I would recommend Sudan. Once you get there, be sure to tell them that everyone who designed the American infrastructure is a “special ed student”. Be sure to tell me how the water there is, it hasn’t been fooled with by any of those dim-wit environmental engineers. Have a nice trip

And just for full disclosure, I work as an environmental engineer (water field, not atmosphere) When I was in school, Civil Engineering was treated as the technical equivalent of Special Ed.. Deport them through Uganda. At $4 a pound, we could turn a profit.

Who hands out the credits? The govt? Thats not capitalism. Thats just another way for the Govt to take our money and spend more in the form of another tax. That is NOT capitalism! It works for SO2, and Reagan was as capitalist as they come. Explain why it's good for SO2 and not for CO2. Is it simply the right's hatred for Al Gore? A) Reagan may have been a lot of things, but mathematically literate was not one of them. I am also not sure he could have defined capitalism if tasked to do so. B) Many of the policies that Reagan put into place were economically disastrous in the long run. C) Al Gore is a moron. He could say something that is right on the money, or is completely wrong, and have no way to tell the difference. D) Whether or not CO2 is a problem, Cap & Trade is a scam.

Haven't you listened to Gen. Jones? The Jews have the money Some more than others, unfortunately.

There are rather a few jokes that are self-depricating when told by members of a given community, but are generally considered off-limits for outsiders. This goes for Irish, Homosexuals, Poles, Negroes, Jews, and what have you. It gets dicey when someone is of mixed origin. If someone is, for example, Navajo, Manchurian, Sikh and Sicilian - which jokes will be okay to the purebloods of each ethnic persuasion? In politics it is usually best to stay clear of jokes that refer to stereotypes, however well-earned they may be. Earl Butz got canned for telling funny jokes ("you no playa da game, you no makea da rules!"), not for being a lousy Secretary of Agriculture (IIRC). In any event, I thought it was a funny joke. If Muhammad were around today, he'd have to register as a sex offender. Amongst his many wives was a 9 YEAR OLD?! He was as much a wannabe as Joseph Smith - or any of the followers of Cousin Jesus, for that matter. As far as his particular version of the Universal Religion goes, it is surely the most virulent. The only relationship his phobosophy has with peace is the "rest in" variety. Len Deighton noted after the Rodney King riots that, if America was a lunatic asylum, California was the Violent Ward. Similarly, given that religion in general is little more than a socially acceptable form of psychosis (having conversations with characters who have been dead for millennia - or never existed in the first place? come on...), islam is truly psychopathic. Having a huge population committed to truly lunatic delusions with overlays of unlimited violence, it is hardly surprising that there is a tendency to avoid pissing them off by various media. There is not much future in antagonizing any population so truly malevolent. As usual, those who are most given to dish it out are the ones least able to take it. Mick Jagger's advice to those unable to take a joke applies. BSBD, Winsor

He's stated before that that is EXACTLY what he wants. Oh, for a killfile. There are some posters who are either morons or take delight in posing as such, but it sure is a waste of time having to skim past their drivel. In any event, who cares what he wants?

Considering what the national debt was ( which APPALLED me at the time of about 800 Billion) under Carter... I have to say I am VERY SORRY for voting for Ronnie RAY GUN and his Reaganomics AKA VOODOODOO Economics that has lead to 12 TRILLION in debt under his fellow travellers of Bush the 1st and Bush the 2nd. It definitely time to try "and now for something completely different" I agree completely. If the numerical illiterates such as Reagan and the Bushes can be likened to Voodoo practitioners, the incumbent is, by comparison, on a par with an educated Physician. Enter Dr. Kevorkian.

That's "pussies," which is the plural of "pussy." "Pussy's" is the possessive. For example: "Those pussies like to play with the ball of yarn. I am not sure which pussy's ball of yarn it is, but all the pussies play with it." I may have flunked English, but I am pretty sure about this one. Blue skies, Winsor What ever you want to be called I am ok with that It is not about calling names, it is about being coherent. Steven Colbert plays a conservative buffoon to mock the opposition; one would do well to avoid playing into the stereotype that their own side of the aisle is synonymous with "village idiot." I do not mind as much if those who represent positions with which I do not agree show themselves to be half-wits - though they may get the backing of the imbecile contingent, which is large and powerful - but it concerns me if someone states a legitimate point in such a manner that it is marginalized. I realize the difficulty that exists when interacting with spineless parasites to avoid stating the obvious, but it does not buy you much in practice. However, if you must resort to name-calling, you may as well seek to use proper grammar and punctuation. The tee shirt that said "your retarded" was a joke by dint of grammatical construct. If you want to be taken seriously, try not to let your language be a joke as well.

yes it will. it was explained to you in detail in another thread. you mean you gave your opinion - but no evidence and interestingly enough I wasn't the only one stating the obvious in that thread. yeah... so show me the evidence that it doesn't cause inflation. And then I'll wink at you too. I'd call you ignorant, but we've tried to educate you. You're just stubborn. Don't encourage it. Maybe if you ignore it, it will go away (since there is no killfile here...).

April 2010 Parachutist, rigid helmets for tandem students
winsor replied to peek's topic in Safety and Training
The reasons I have been given all relate to broken noses and teeth on the part of tandem masters, whose students, before being unbuckled, jumped for joy after landing and bashed them with hard helmets. I see no reason that a layer of non-tooth-breaking foam could not be applied to the outside of a student helmet, to provide some bump protection for the student while limiting impact to the tandem master at frap hat levels. Full text here. Personally, I am strongly for legalization. It is a recreational drug that *all things considered* is safer than alcohol, so we are sending many wrong messages by having it illegal while alcohol is legal. I just can't see how the personal use of it (by an adult and in a manner not affecting minors) should be a crime. Not saying it's a harmless drug, but I can't find any justification for keeping it illegal and spending money to fight this "crime." Harmless? Humbug! It has been PROVEN that Marihuana makes your babies get born NAKED! Think of the children! Blue skies/red eyes, Winsor

Actually, the G.W. Bush who occupied the Oval Office was a far cry from the one to be found at the Governor's Mansion in Austin. Once it became clear that he had gone around the bend, the consensus of people who assumed it was a bluff was WTF? Blue skies, Winsor Oh, was GWB a great governor? Hardly. I don't know his record well, but I think his presidency was a continuation of his governorship. The key part of your observation with which I find fault is where you say "I think." "5% of the population think, 5% think they think, and 90% would rather die than think." Taylor Caldwell

From his own statements, "socialist" is an entirely applicable descriptor. If you see someone with orange hair, a big round red ball nose, and size 52 shoes, calling them a "clown" is not an accusation but an observation. He was sired by a foreigner, he had a foreign stepfather, and he spent a significant part of his formative years abroad. My guess is that this, along with how Hawaii records births, forms the basis of this suspicion. OTOH, I seem to recall that McCain was born at a Naval installation abroad (Panama?), so I can't see why anyone might make this one a big issue. This one is so vague as to be meaningless. I do "many things that Hitler did," and I am hardly a fan of der Fuehrer. Uncle Adolph did many things as a head of state that were also done by leaders we remember fondly; there were, however, a few acts and policies that were not embraced to strongly and publicly by those whose memories we cherish. This all comes down to what you wish to include amongst "things" (you could hardly be more vague). Well, the road to Hell is reportely paved with good intentions, and this country (and most of the planet, for that matter) is going to hell in stages. Thus, for all his good intentions, the fact that he is the one at the helm at this time of slow-motion unfolding disaster kind of leaves him holding the bag. We like to think of evil as a Hollywood/comic book sort of thing, but true evil tends to have a banal quality. The average Gestapo operative would characterize themself as being a good policeman doing a tough job. Curtis LeMay, whose stated goal was to reduce the population of Japan "by half" surely thought he was on the side of the angels Given that some 94% of all Americans think there is some sort of invisible entity running the show, I can't see how they can be taken to task for actually letting on some of the more psychotic facets of their delusion. Come on, you have the Roman crowd, who are run by a group that requires hot and cold running little boys, the Mecca bunch that wants the clock turned back 1,300 years and follows someone who took the time to MARRY a 9-year old, the Salt Lake City crowd who swallow hook, line and sinker the veriafiable nonsense spouted by a convicted swindler (who also used his position to collect a bevy of wives), and, just for fun, the pontificating of a hack science fiction writer whose claims would be pushing it for a comedy routine (Galexy Quest was more plausible). If you hadn't noticed it, sanity is not a big seller in this fair land. The Fleetwood Mac song "Tell Me Lies" kind of sums it up. If you tell people things that contradict the conclusions to which they have leapt, far from being grateful they will usually get angry. When I am told that, when things get bad enough, people will catch on and do whatever is necessary to rectify the situation, I call bullshit. Sufficient information has been available all along to avoid the catastrophy we face, and there is no reason why people should stop ignoring what was staring at them in the face in the first place. We want people to tell us what we want to hear, so we elect people like the incumbent. What else is new? The problem I have is that, given that Democrats suck out loud, who is to suggest that Republicans do not suck out loud equally? Put another way, just because Party X is very, very bad, what is to suggest that Party Y is not very, very bad as well? Think Stalin/Hitler (I know, Godwin's Law, but you brought it up first). On the one hand, there is Schadenfreude in that the person at the helm when things go to hell may wind up being blamed for the whole thing. OTOH, Roosevelt took the market correction of the Crash of 1929 and turned it into a Depression that lasted until 1947 by means of deft application of Government "help," and got credit for SAVING us from the very economic disaster that he reinforced and prolonged. Go figure. As long as you realize that people don't vote on the basis of intellect, you'll be fine. Blue & Red skies, Winsor

Agreed, but I am sometimes as dismayed by people who learned Physics courtesy of Warner Brothers as I am by people who learned Arithmetic courtesy of Congress. Same difference.

I have managed to make it through maybe 10 minutes of Glenn Beck, and was thoroughly nauseated by the experience. Jon Stewart is more intelligent by far, but there is much that he fails to consider in the conclusions he reaches. If anyone positions themself as a True Believer (tm) in accordance with any "ism," it's safe to discount their rationale (such as it is). If they hold the same stance as do I, it will be purely by chance. Blue skies, Winsor
