  1. It got yanked before I could check it out. IIRC, at least when I was in Russia, the Russian equivalent to our "bird" is a gesture using the index and middle finger. It was stressed that one should not flash a "peace sign" for fear of it being interpreted as some kind of backwards version. I really would not worry about it - unless the Russians follow the American practice where disapproval of the leader of a sovereign nation is shown by invading their country and executing said leader. We do not set a particularly good example. BSBD, Winsor
  2. It is science every bit as sound as you can find in any Superman comic book.
  3. Like I said We will do our damnest to try and keep the next gereration from being fucked over by the alarmist wackos Those who beleive this are among those wackos I wouldn't worry about it - in particular. The next generation is unavoidably fucked in so many ways that the comic-book science syncophants only add to the mix. We have overspent enough to absorb a generation's output - if that generation was productive as hell - and we are increasing our debt burden at an exponential pace. We are importing over 75% of the petroleum we require to get through the day (as well as everything else), and we are poised to improve our production very, very soon. Solyndra should pick up most of the slack. We have been paying the indigent to breed for half a century (it's hard to measure by "generations" since, like tribbles, they appear to be born pregnant), and it is politically incorrect to suggest there is something wrong with that. "You hate the poor!" Uh, no, but think poverty would not be as much of an issue if poor people avoided having babies - starting with the "Great Society." Sam Kinneson pointed out the futility of "aid" to famine struck areas, and the principle of people without food expecting things to somehow spontaneously improve if they can only have enough children is a losing bet. As Rocket J. Squirrel said, "that trick never works!" BSBD, Winsor
  4. We are and if we can help it, we will not allow the alarmist to fuck them over any more Oh, sure - next thing you're gonna suggest the earth is not flat. Ever been to Kansas, Bucko? It is topographically flatter than a pancake. The science is settled.
  5. You sound suspiciously like a DENIER. Think of the children.
  6. They often are. Your average RA makes too little to interest the IRS, and PhD candidates do the lion's share of pure research. "It's not just a job - it's an indenture."
  7. Speaking of not listening....reading comprehension can be your friend. And how is it you have an opinion on the subject?
  8. But your statement implies you have seen proof that Bush/Cheney did violate international law. Please enlighten me. Forgive me for going all Godwin on this, but invading Iraq seems to pin the meter. It seems that when Germany invaded Poland some time back, they went to great lengths to stage an attack by Poland on Germany beforehand. Why? Because invading a sovereign nation without a clear cassus belli is a clear violation of quite a laundry list of international laws, and even the Third Reich had the good taste to pretend they were on the legal high ground. When we went into Iraq, it was because of a stack of allegations from dodgy sources with clear agenda. Weapons of Mass Destruction? Give me a break! If you want WMDs, we have more of them than anyone else on the planet - and we are the only country that has taken the opportunity to use every variety (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) ! If anything, that would have given Iraq cause to invade the US of A! We are a signatory on the Geneva Accords, which forbids torture. Anyone who thinks waterboarding is not torture can undergo a couple of sessions and get back to me. When I was trained in interrogation, waterboarding was among the things that was expressly forbidden (and some of the stuff we could do was pretty nasty). Don't get me wrong, even though the Hague Accords forbid using a .50 BMG against personnel, if I am being overrun and all I have on hand is an M-2 and an endless belt of ammo, I will be likely to melt the barrel without a single warning shot. I do, however, know that I am in violation of international law by using such means to save my life. My greatest objection to the last administration was not their blatent violation of international law, it was their gross incompetence. The Bush administration seemed to have a version of the Midas touch where everything turned to shit. Just because I am equally underwhelmed by the current crop of bozos (no offense to bozos here) does not mean I think any more highly of the last group of cretins we put in charge. The Bush administration may not have had the capacity to comprehend the law - which might form the basis of a convincing defense - but they publicly broke laws left and right. BSBD, Winsor
  9. Alfa 164 - 5 speed Ram 150 - 4-speed (granny gear 1st) H-D Superglide - 4 speed Moto Guzzi Interceptor - 5 speed You can't push start an automatic (with exception of early Mopar units with a rear pump). Engine braking with an automatic is much less effective. Automatics waste power whenever relying on the torque converter. Automatics are more complex, more expensive, more likely to break and more of a pain to fix (I have rebuilt lots of both). Having a manual sets a competence threshold for anyone wanting to use your vehicle.
  10. We have a spending problem Not a revenue problem It rather goes beyond that. To say that we have been spending money like a drunken sailor is an insult to drunken sailors - when drunken sailors run out of money, they stop spending. We are in the unenviable position of a gambler who has been given an open bar and unlimited markers. Upon regaining consciousness, our unfortunate wastrel is likely to discover that the losses are much more than can ever be repaid. Given that our economy is dependent on "growth" and an unfettered trade deficit, the reality is that this model is ultimately unsustainable. Put another way, we are beyond fucked. The image keeps coming to mind of John Cusak in "Fat Man and Little Boy," where he plays a physicist who gets a massive dose of radiation. Going to the blackboard, he works out the numbers, looks up and says "I'm dead!" Our economy is on life support, and the only question is when it will prove insufficient or be cut off. If we were to balance trade today (and I am ignoring the tab we have so far run up), we would go from 20,000,000 barrels of oil a day to 4,700,000 right off the bat - assuming oil produced here is not sold to foreign buyers with money that has any value. Our "Strategic Reserve" would cover our needs for a period of time conveniently measured in minutes, but then we would revert to what we produce and get to keep. What people do not realize is that this does not mean there would be 1/4 as many cars on the road - there would be effectively NO cars on the road. Our minimum petroleum infrastructure requirements (power, industrial, transport) are greater than our net production, and civilian gasoline production is only part of what we import. The size of the economic catastrophe we face is as unprecedented as it is unavoidable. Enjoy yourself - it's later than you think. BSBD, Winsor
  11. Sort of like hell with frostbite.
  12. The only reason Newt is doing so well is that Spiro Agnew is unavailable.
  13. Sen Feinstein (D-VPC) hardest hit. On a more serious note...I consider this a good thing. Now, how far will it get in the Senate? It is my understanding that CWP holders always have a right of passage through any state. Is that true? I can most heartily assure you that this is not the case. Waving them around would tend to negate the privilege if existing, yes. Again, I most heartily agree. There is a huge gap, however, between an accustaion and a reality. An accusation may be made for the sole purpose of generating hysteria; to hold the accused accountable for the resulting hysteria is unconscionable. This is particularly true when there is no due process related to the accusations - it is merely slander shielded by prosecutorial immunity. I am not guessing here.

  15. Examples please. Try History 101 - take your pick.
  16. Really? So where's the EPA studies showing that? Oh, wait.. the EPA said there hadn't been any incidents. www.ewg.org/release/epa-report-fracking-contaminated-drinking-water Got a link to the actual EPA vs the story from the advocacy site? It exists in hardcopy only. In 1987 the EPA had not yet discovered the electron. As it is, the EPA is a solid 30 years behind the curve in software development. On-the-fly coding with a time and materials contract? It's a contractor's wet dream. BSBD, Winsor
  17. Seems I'm not alone in my views of big time college sports. www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2011/11/16/sports/s013928S86.DTL I share Haynes and Leary's view of football players.
  18. Those that are Right Wing Conservatives do have serious issues when it comes to learning anything that conflicts with their belief systems. Anything that challenges the RWC dogma as presented by the corporate media is ALWAYS difficult for them to comprehend. It is part of the DNA of RWCs. They are told what and how to think by their masters, and accept it without question. Any challenge to the dogma is discarded, as thinking independently, with critical analysis and fact checking is not something that is a positive personality trait, to them. It is no surprise that the history of the IWW is something that there is ZERO knowlege of, among RWCs. The people beat the corporate interests in those days. We'll see if the true patriots among us rise to the top these days, as they did in those days. Say "hi" to Joseph Hilstrom.
  19. He should be waterboarded. THAT will help him to remember, by golly.
  20. That and their ability to endorse much of anything is on a par with a mold colony. They are just kind of there.
  21. Romney will SAY anything - none of which means much. I would not base any evaluation of who or what he is on what he claims on any particular day.
