  1. That was simple. Not sure why I didn't think to throw an extra stow in. Had other people pack. Same issue. Packed according to manual, although I've altered some to see if it helps here and there. Had a rigger watch me pack. Kill line checked. Hard to get video of it opening because sometimes it happens, sometimes not. I may end up needing someone to film me for 5-10 jumps. Or it may twist 4 jumps in a row. I think I'm just going to get a new PC just to take that out of the equation.
  2. Canopy is a bit big for my weight. I'm more than confident with the things on the downsize checklist. Now I'm ready to get gear thats a big more freefly friendly and safe, but don't want to buy the same size I'm already ready to downsize from. Sometimes in high winds I don't get the penetration I'd like on a 190, and frequently use the fronts to cut through.
  3. So this is still an issue. It seems to be spinning once the D bag comes out. PC is old, but rigger says its still fine, same with kill line. I was told two things. Make sure there is less line from risers to first stow so it doesn't have a bunch to spin the D bag, and make sure my line stows are smaller. How am I supposed to do both? If I make the line stows shorter I end up with more leftovers at the end. I can't find any rhyme or reason. It is not body position. I've messed with my stows, and my nose. Sometimes it happens multiple jumps in a row, sometimes not. But there seems to be no correlation to how I packed.
  4. Rough exit weight of 180 flying a specter 190. It's time to get a newer one, so I'm thinking of getting a 170, and keeping my 190 set up for wing suiting. How long do you think I will be on that 170 before wanting to downsize again? From jump number 200-? I'm trying to decide wether I should just bite the bullet and buy a new one that will last my a long time thats set up with exactly what I want. Can someone at my wing loading on a 170 do say, medium performance landings? Or if I decided to start doing a bit more high performance landings would I need to downsize again for that? Thanks.
  5. Apex PCs are this design? Guess theres no need to replace them with a squirrel snatch on mine.
  6. Finding the water isn't the problem - it's the person who can give me an old rig for the purpose, tell me what to do, and throw my into it. It does, however, sound like Skydive Monterey Bay (which I am visiting on the way home) may be able to hook me up. Unless they are completing your B license there wait till after. B only there. They don't seem like a place that's would do you training but idk. Not even fun jump friendly most of the time. Are you thinking Oceanside? I know they're B only. SMB isn't B only, I emailed to ask them about jumping there, and with a A no problem. I'm finishing everything for a B except I'm missing water training before I get there. Weird when I jumped there last year they said they required a B so I went to Eloy and finished it. Beautiful place to jump. If you ever get up with all the tandems pushing you back ...

  8. Depends on the rig. Some are sewn to the d-bag. As I outlined above, putting an untested aftermarket part is likely to be increasing the chances of a malfunction. I showed my design to chief riggers and designers at 2 of the largest manufacturers. After discussing all the fine details about how their PC works within a system I realized that the design is not appropriate for the general skydiver. A PDA type PC is not a new idea at all. If pulling the pin and extracting the d-bag at the highest speed possible were the objective we'd all be rocking 48" pilot chutes! The amount of drag generated by your factory unit was carefully selected and tested. It works. Just make sure what you have is maintained in good condition - that's the key to increasing safety. -Michael So this might actually cause more issues on my old gear?
  9. Pretty damn annoying. I got my DOT medical no problem and still hold it in conjunction with my ambulance license. I really can't stand the FAAs corrupted crap. I get it's for safety but the need to make some major changes. I can't believe they would make someone pay 6-10 thousand dollars and then say never mind we don't even want the test results.
  10. Not sure where on the spectrum of ok and old this is but it seems like it needs to be replaced to me. I was leaning towards might as well put in a little extra for for skysnatch until I looked at the handle. Not sure I like the little pvc handle but I've never tried one. http://s1357.photobucket.com/user/WildernessMedic/media/Skydiving/8F309A53-447F-4490-93D8-DE9BA960D392_zpsrzxjxm4v.jpg.html Does embedding not work on here?
  11. to me this doesn't help you because as a TI you would operate for compensation.?? I'm pretty sure commercial pilot is a different realm then TI. It's my understanding it's just the medical portion but who knows what the overlap is with the new medical.
  12. That makes it sound like even if I was denied I can retake the new one and get it. So confusing. Sure would have been nice if I just waited for the new medical.
  13. Haha well put. I started to relax a lot more once I started viewing my main as my "practice" canopy.
  14. Well in my case the cost of a core test battery from a licensed person was 6-$10,000.00. And like I said, I complied, and then they said never mind. Sure hope it doesn't end in a final denial. But if it does it sounds like I'm out of luck on ever becoming a TI.
  15. and there is a process in place to waive those things and still get a Class III issued. I know that because I go through that process every year to get my Class II So I re-state that if you cannot manage a Class III medical, (a reasonable request when you are taking passengers up for rides where their life depends on your skillset and abilities), then maybe you should not be doing it. No one said all the rules are fair to everyone all the time, but for 99.99% of the time, it works reasonably well and sets a standard. I will agree with you that they work MOST of the time but not 99.9% I am in the process of disputing it but haven't heard the final word yet. The FAA asked for me to do a bunch of neurological tests, which I did at great expense and time. Then when I submitted it the deadline had already passed. To their own admittance it was submitted plenty before the deadline but THEY couldn't review it in time so they had to deny me. When I fought it they then said forget allll that testing we required and just write a sworn statement of being able to fly. No word yet. I'd say that's a pretty flawed system even if they DO grant me it. So they needed testing but now just want me to pinky promise I'm ok? And if they deny me they didn't even care to review what THEY requested and required? I'm aware they won't require it in the future. I regret not knowing that before I got into this year long nightmare. I would have waited.
  16. Well, you expect wrong.... There are a lot of disqualifying factors that MAY effect flying (still believe they don't) that wouldn't effect being a TI. I understand it's a liability thing because of what's on paper, but the FAA likes to take medical issues that have a huge spectrum of symptoms and dq you for things you might not even have. They don't care about the individual or finding out more in detail, just what box is checked on the paper.
  17. Is there any way to get around needing one for a TI rating? Or an exemption that is for skydiving only? I may have gotten denied while applying for my PPL. If that's the case does that mean I can never be a TI?
  18. A license to carry and transporting are two different things. Its legal to lock up unloaded guns and check them under the plane. Because "mental issues" are a very broad tag. Having "mental issues" can rang from some mild depression that doesn't affect anything, to full blown schizophrenia. Yes stats lie. Way too many more factors. Look at Chicago. Hard to use the "stats" for a correlation to any side.
  19. If this isn't a troll, why wouldn't you just find a BASE rig since it's just a one time thing.
  20. How's your sub terminal tracking? Make sure you do a gainer.
  21. Thanks guys. If my pc was good I wouldn't even consider it but I badly need a new one.
  22. I plan on doing a lot of wingsuiting this summer. In that case is it worth the extra $80 for cleaner openings?
  23. My PC has about had it. Is a SkySnatch worth the extra money or more of a gimmick?
  24. That's what I was taught too. Then I saw PD did a ton of tests and found that not only to be untrue, but can cause out of sequence deployments.
  25. PC might have something to do with it since it is reaaallly worn out. But again this only occurs in the tracking suit. All good stuff to keep in mind but none of it effected my openings without the suit. So I guess that only leaves forward speed and dynamic corners. I did learn to double wrap my locking stows and keep my line bites shorter. I really need a new container
