post a picture of your favorite skydiving patch
SWIMDOC replied to sonofapope's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
AL: Great spot on the D-Day jump patch. My uncle was 82nd and made the drop...I was in France 3 years ago at St. Mere and it was very cool. They have an American jumper hanging from the church in the square. Lots of Airborne flags and banners in the various shops. Can't imagine dropping into the town square with a barn on fire at one end and German MG-42s working the rest of the area. They were the greatest generation. Blue skys. Doc -
topdocker: I have to laugh about Haley's situation...I have a daughter as well, but kept her well away from the DZ. Wish I could take credit for Antioch's reputation back in the day, but it was all the skygods (and Perry Stevens). I was basically a strap-hanger but I loved being there and jumping with those guys. My best to Steve and to you sir. Blue skies Doc

MEN: Found these two pics of me jumping Perry Stevens' PC at Antioch. Happy New Year all and Blue skies. Doc

ALL: I found a bunch of old Antioch DZ pics that I thought I would share. Jumping there was always a lot of fun, and there were a lot of really cool jumpers at that time. Perry Stevens ran the place and I always appreciated his insistence on safety, especially with new students. As I recall, he had a hard time controlling the likes of Norton, Landry, Haley, barefoot Norm, Gus, Jim and Sherry Barnhill and other sky gods that I looked up to. If any of you are out there, many thanks for making my intro to the sport a blast. I really looked forwards to my time on the DZ there and jumping (even if it was only falling "base" for everyone.... I have a lot of log entries where I can only read the USPA License #, but if anyone is interested, I can provide them. DOC

Men: This post forced me to dig through some old pics and scan them for upload. These jumps were made at the old Antioch (CA) DZ in Northern California. (No longer in operation....) Blue skies! DOC
-
ALL: Attached, please find pic taken during climb out over Antioch circa 1978. Sorry, film is "foggy" due to age but I think anyone who jumped here will recognize it. NOTE: The red and white PC of jumper below.

PHOTO DID NOT LOAD. TRYING AGAIN.

MADJOHN: Thanks for the update. Yep. Third photo was taken from the jump plane by an observer with a telephoto. The "Spot" was the dry area a bit SW of the airport. See photo attached. I was going to start a threat about "bandit jumps" but I suspect that the statute of limitations may not be over...but tell Steve Haley hello! He won't remember me but I managed a few jumps with him, Gus Evans, Jim Barnhill, barefoot Norm, Norton, Linda B. and others. Good times. I need to drop in on Byron. I live in Stockton but jump mostly at Lodi with Bill D and crew,..and hit San Diego every now and then. Doc

ADDITIONAL TO MY POST: The following information re: The TROJAN PARACHUTE CLUB might be of interest to you all. Forgive me if you have already seen or posted this, but the links are no longer live. http://soldiersystems.net/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/History-of-the-10th-SFGA-HALO-and-ODA-8.pdf DOC

MEN: I am new to the DZ, so forgive my tardy response to this post. I thought you might enjoy reading information on Military Operational Parachute Jumps from the SF Association, found here: http://www.specialforcesassociation.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Combat_Jump_Record_03.07.2013.pdf I note that the SAS conducted a HALO op in OMAN in 1967; and am personally aware of SOG operations in RVN in 1970-1971 involving HALO insertion. Currently, HALO and HAHO insertions are the norm for Naval Special Warfare, Air Force PJs, SOF, etc. For me, it remains, "one of the best ways to commute to work" I have ever had. Blue skies men. Doc

Small world. A friend of mine actually started the Chuting Stars back in the 60s (Captain Norm Olsen) and they became the LEAPFROGS; unless this was a regional Navy team keeping the name.

I was jumping at Antioch (CA) and the "Last Load" was something cool. We would take off just as the sun was about to set and then watch it set again as we climbed (summertime). I was in a hurry to make the last load and was re-packing my PC. I was running late and so I just sort of folded up the stabilizer panels and stowed them. You got it. Malfunction junction. I cutaway from the spinning malfunction after about 2.5 revolutions as the canopy was diving down and I was above it. Good times.. DOC

Who remembers their Free lottery number
SWIMDOC replied to Krip's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
My number was 120. But I "fooled" them...I joined the USN. I was stationed at NAB Coronado... Good times... DOC -
JIM Randy "Doc" Haight. At the time, I was a Stockton PD Officer and my jump buddy was also an officer, Mike Saculla. Your name is familiar, but I don't see it in my early logs. Who did you jump with and do you have a pic from that time? I have attached a pic from Antioch with Saculla. I continue to jump at Acampo. Recent pic also attached.

April 1982 Antioch CA, first jump student
SWIMDOC replied to 377's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
I wasn't here for this one. But, I do remember Jim Barnhill under a streamer as he came down right over sugarloaf. His reserve opened just before impact and he landed unhurt. I asked him what he was doing those last few moments and he looked at me and said, "All I was thinking was,....PLF like a mother fucker...just PLF" True story. DOC -
Very brown indeed. Here are a couple pics from the late 70s and early 80s. I jumped Antioch regularly. DOC

All: New to the forum, so I know this post is as late. I jumped a Star in Antioch and Acampo in the late 70s and early 80s. I purchased this from Perry Stevens (I think it was on consignment) so I don't remember who actually owned it. Would really like to know if anyone remembers this canopy around Antioch, Yolo or other Nor Cal DZs.

PAT: I jumped at Antioch a lot in late 70s and early 80s. Jumped with Norton, Gene and Linda, Gus Evans, Barefoot Norm, Jim and Sherry Kolander etc. Here are a couple pics from that time, but sadly, none with these sky gods. I have a lot of log entries with them as well.
