And what...4 mb of Ram in that 386? Or were you a power user...a rich power user...with 8mb of ram? I remember adding 8mb of ram to my 486-33 when Win95 was released and paying $400 US for it. Gee, and now you can put up to 8GB of ram into a G5 Power Mac. At the 1995 ram prices I'd have to pay $400,000! The cost of adding 7.5 gb to the 512mb that comes with a G5 is $4950 US or $0.66 per mb $50/mb divided by .66/mb = 75..RAM is now 1/75 the cost!! Storage cost has likely gone down even more. 120gb hard drive vs 40 mb for likely less money = 1/3000 the cost per mb of storage. Bill, Daryl had an article in Canpara not all that long ago....the Oct/Nov/Dec - 2002 issue. It was about the 40th anniversary of Canada's first medal at a World Parachuting Championships....Gold in Team Accuracy won by Jim Noble, Daryl, Floyd Martineau (still an active jumper) and Simon Wykeham-Martin (who passed away of lung cancer in the late 80's). As mentioned, I believe he is in California still. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Add me to the long list of people who have benefitted from your presence on dz.com and who will miss you. From the last page of Andy Keech's "Skies Call"... .... His gear still carries dust from drop zones round the world He stood with national team and saw his flag unfurled So if our ranks he now must leave, no reason should be sought Respect his silent privacy, the turmoil of his thought. Exporting as a Quicktime movie will work. I like the Sorenson codec. File sizes can be quite large depending on the frame rate and key frame rate as well as the size of the video (i.e. - 480x320) If you go for 29.97 frames and a frequent key frame rate...like every frame, the quality will be wonderful but it will be a big file. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey -

Steve Jobs announced a few new things today on the video end...Final Cut Express 2 and iLife'04 - iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto and a new program - Garage Band that appears to combine Soundtrack with the ability to record your own music by itself or with loops, etc. I haven't looked at the new features very much but an improvement in iDVD that is going to be most welcome is that the pro level mpg encoding from Final Cut Pro has been incorporated. Up to 2 hours of top quality video on one DVD. iLife '04 will be a paid upgrade for $49. He also announced new mini iPods..4gb, very small, in colours. $249. USB2 and Firewire cables included so it's ready to go with Windows or Mac machines. Have I ever mentioned that Steve Jobs cracks me up? Check out his blog. edited to add a PS to Lori: I'll be the test user to see if iMovie is worth getting this time

FCE isn't upgradable to FCP...so the way to buy it is with a new Mac for $99. FCE features here and FCP features here. FCP has lots of extras, mentioned in my previous post, and handles all kinds of media whereas FCE is optimized for DV25 which is what nearly all of us use. I think that Adobe Premiere would be the nearest equivalent on the PC.....but I have no experience with PC editing software or hardware. Do you have a friend or Apple Store nearby so that you could check out using a Mac? Somebody that would let you download some photos and dv to play with? I think that an hour or two would help you make an informed decision....on what will work for you the best. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Blake, I bought myself a Nikon film scanner (Coolscan IV) a while ago with the intentions of digitizing as much of my old slides, colour negatives, b&w negatives, etc, that I have accumulated since getting my first SLR in 1975. God it is a huge time consuming job. The time spent scanning is considerable..add to that the time sorting through boxes of slides, binders full of slides and negatives, the time in Photoshop spent fixing the inevitable damage that happens to negatives and slides. (I'm pretty surprised as most of these negs were put into sleeves right after processing.) Stay with the digital....it is far easier to catalog/organize your shots and as long as you are fastidious about making backups of your backups your shots will be as pristine in 10 years time as the day you took them. The flexibility of a digital photo is awesome....for me, using iPhoto on my Mac, within instants of having taken the shot, I can: - print a copy on my inkjet printer - e-mail the photos - add them to a slideshow to watch onscreen with any music I have on my computer - order prints on-line - put them into a book, order it online and have it delievered in about a week, - upload them to my .mac homepage - create a .mac screensaver that other Mac users can subscribe to - put them on my desktop - export them to a Quicktime file - export them to a webpage other than my .mac homepage - export the files in smaller sizes, same size, etc. - burn them to a cd or DVD as a datafile - export them to a DVD as a slideshow .....all with a couple of mouse clicks. It sure makes it easy to share your photos

Or...Final Cut Express for $99 with a new Mac. Most of the capabilities of FCP but much less dinero except that Final Cut Pro is actually a suite of programs...FCP, Soundtrack, Livetype and a couple of others. If you don't want the extras, FCE is much lower cost. (I hear rumors that FCE2 will be announced at MacWorld San Franciso on Monday, January 5, 2004.) Scott Snyder (Slayer21016 on Dz.com)does some good looking work on FCP and Livetype. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

JP, I wish I could remember who built the tersh that I had...it was a neat design based on a backup system for hang gliders designed by, I believe, Jim Handbury. It was an unmodified round connected to a 20 foot long bridle. The canopy was packed inside a deployment bag that was just velcroed to the harness. You threw the deployment bag away from you, the round came out of the bag...similar to a freebag...opened and lowered you at a high but survivable rate to the ground. I know one hard core crw person from Alberta that owed his life to one...he was completely wrapped up and threw the tersh out of the only opening in the nylon he could see...by his feet...and was lowered to a hard but survivable landing. My buddy and I wouldn't have done the crw on our reserves without them. We figured that the tershs gave us the best possible backup to a wrap when we couldn't cutaway. We had maybe a hundred crw jumps with each other...so we had confidence in the other guy. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

Using film or a digital camera capable of it...tripod, cable release and use the bulb setting. Which means the shutter stays open as long as you keep the shutter release depressed. Open it, wait for a few bursts and then close it and advance the film. Vary your exposures and f-stops....lots of fun getting a lot of bursts on one frame. I've used about f8 or 5.6 even with slow film as the bursts are very bright. As the ambient light is very low, you can do fairly long exposures. I wish I had some of my old fireworks slides scanned to post but I don't. Play around and have some fun...experiment...you'll be pleased with the results. have a good one, -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I've been scanning some old slides the last little while and thought the Crw-dogs might like the attached. It's a downplane a buddy and I did on our Phantom 145 reserves after doing a double intentional cutaway...circa 1985 or so. I took pictures with a fisheye lens on a camera duct taped to my running shoe. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

As I was getting ready to video the frenzy of Christmas morning present opening I noticed a small speck of dust on the back surface of the lens of my PC-1. It doesn't seem to affect the video..as far as I can tell from the screen. Is there any way to blast this off using compressed air or do I take it in for a cleaning? -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey

I bought the WIN98SE upgrade a while back hoping to be able to use my USB peripherals on my Windows laptop.....well, it was a complete waste of money. Take AggieDave and Ivan's advice and get a better version of Windows ....hopefully your computer will handle a more recent OS. If you were running WIN98, I assume your machine is getting rather old. You might just be better off shopping for a new machine. -- Murray "No tyranny is so irksome as petty tyranny: the officious demands of policemen, government clerks, and electromechanical gadgets." - Edward Abbey
