WOW, the shit doesn't stop! Add me to the D List :-(
JackC replied to flyinhi79's topic in The Bonfire
Like Billy said, kudos for taking the high road. But while you're on that high road, just be aware that her lawyers could well be lining up to hammer you back to the stone age. I would be wise to have an ace in the hole, just in case. -
Ah but they can't. You cannot perform any scientific work by the application of faith, likewise you cannot persue matters of faith by the application of science. Faith and science can only exist simultaneously if they are not allowed to come into contact with each other.
-
But faith and science are mutually exclusive by definition. Science is 100% evidence based, faith is 100% belief in spite of the evidence. As for Palin, it really boggles the mind to think that someone that dumb could even be considered for VP. What does that say about America?

Big Country. And I hate Big Country, but live they were astounding.

Bollocks. I work for my candy, I'm not redistributing any of it to a bunch of moochers.

Is wikipedia a threat to humanity's basic level of intellegence?
JackC replied to skydiver30960's topic in Speakers Corner
And that's where (on certain controversial topics) it can be manipulated to reflect only one view point. Cites and sources can also be quote mined and presented out of context along with biased conclusions by the user. True, this tends to result in edit wars which get noticed, and editorial controls imposed by wiki, but sometimes if you go in at the wrong time on the wrong subject with out any previous knowledge, you could get led down the wrong path. It's the same with any information you pull from the internet, not just Wikipedia - caveat emptor. -
Would you mention that you are a skydiver?
JackC replied to Superman32's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I leave it on my resume but I wouldn't mention it unless they asked about it. And even then I keep it brief. -

Me too. Wikipedia generally references it's source material so even if you have little faith in Wikipedia, they make it easy for you to go direct to the horses mouth so-to-speak. I wouldn't cite wikipedia as a reference, but I frequently use it as a starting point. -

I agree, but Speakers Corner isn't a PhD thesis. I was once told that part of writing effectively is to know your audience. If I'm reading a Russian theoretical physics paper, I expect to have to read it very carefuly and do some of the maths if I want to understand it. But if I am going to put myself to all that trouble, I'd better be fairly sure I want to know what's in there.

Emotional blackmail ~ the short route to a life full of hang-ups. -
Maybe it's just me but I find your point frequently gets buried in a blizzard of hyperlinks, italics, bold face, non-ASCII characters, omitted or implied words and frequent use of high-order intentionality. I like to read your stuff because you always back up your opinions with facts and you obviously put a lot of effort into getting your facts straight, but I do find it damned hard work sometimes. Sorry.

If insurance companies decide they can limit their risk exposure by insisting that kids don't get to shoot, that's exactly what will happen.

One thing I have noticed is that for any subject that I have studied in some depth; politicians, lawyers and journalists will claim authority and knowledge while simultaneously being complete imbeciles who know less than nothing. Unfortunately the people who are in charge of telling the uninformed public about anything of social importance, are the politicians, lawyers and journalists.

LOL Most excellent sarcasm there Zep. You almost had me until you mentioned Italy.

Yeah, I don't know why they bother. It's not like she needs any help.

Given as that came from a grammar website, you would have to discuss the prose with them. That, rather worryingly, explains a lot.
-
Dogbreath cannot have been named Vice-President by the convention since a convention is not a person and therefore cannot name anything. So we must ask: is the convention named dogbreath (as in the National Dogbreath Convention)? Or is the president's first name Dogbreath, second name Vice? Or something else entirely? Given the quality of your prose, do you really think you should be giving grammar advice?

what would happen if we closed down most of our overseas bases?
JackC replied to TrophyHusband's topic in Speakers Corner
You think the US should provide a mercenary army? To the highest bidder? Not exactly, but for the countries the we have deemed "worthy" of our miltary defense, have them foot the bill. So that's a yes then. You would sell the services of the US military to whoever you deem "worthy". Presumably the ability to pay on one of the criterion for being considered "worthy". OK, counterpoint, you want a base on our land, pay rent. -

Yeah, I thought it might be too subtle a point for you to get. Never mind.
