And yet, after millions of years of evolution, the problem hasn't worked itself out.... Hmmmmm. Why would it?

What is "spiritual"?

Depends where you're from I guess. In the UK, keep left means keep left regardless of how fast you're going. Lane discipline 264 You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past. Slow-moving or speed-restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by the police, HA traffic officers in uniform or by signs.

Well that's just plain dangerous and stupid. The guy riding your ass might not be so quick. Shit like that can get you killed.

Old Debate: Canopies with no input, *will* fly downwind?
JackC replied to mdrejhon's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A rapid increase in wind strength can affect a canopy's heading by moving the relatively light inertial mass of the canopy more than the heavier inertial mass of the skydiver. If the gust comes slightly from the side, this will make the canopy roll which induces a turn. The pendulum effect of the skydiver swinging back underneath and past center will only partially correct for this because the amplitude of the swing will be less so the net result is an altered heading. Once the canopy has taken a heading slightly off the wind line, any gust along the wind line will induce more roll and hence more turns. A rapid decrease in wind speed however, will tend to make the canopy dive to regain it's airspeed instead of roll so the heading will be affected much less. Debate that one amongst yourselves, I'm off to the pub to do some interactive fluid dynamics experiments. -
meh... I'm a skydiver 60 seconds at a time. The rest of the time I'm a wannabe.

Any lighter and it starts to look a bit washed out, but I'm no expert in photoshop.

UK has never elected a Prime Minister; never. The ruling party does, always has. If you want to live in a republic you can always move to France. Officially. Unofficially, the leader of a party makes a big difference to their electability. In Jack's Britain, any serving PM who stands down would trigger a general election to be held not more than 6 weeks later. The deputy PM would take over in the interim. There would be no uncontested coronations.

I'm thinking of the recent case in the UK where a chief scientific advisor to the government on the misuse of drugs was fired after the government went against the advisory panel's recomendations and he made comment about it. His comments were within the governments own guidelines regarding acceptable comments etc yet he was sacked for lobbying. This has lead to the resignation of five other members of the advisory panel in protest saying that they could not continue in good concience knowing that their advice would not be respected. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/6470090/Three-more-drug-advisers-quit-over-sacking-of-Professor-David-Nutt.html If a government commits to using evidence based policy, they should use evidence based policy. But alas it seems the only evidence the UK government want to hear is in support of the policy most likely to keep the unelected PM in office.

Here's a wall I'd like to break down. The one that allowed an unelected prime minister to get the keys to number 10 without holding an election. The one that allowed a country to give up its sovereignty to an unelected beurocracy in Brussels without so much as a referendum. The wall that allows a government to hire scientific advisors and then fire them when they don't give the answers the government wants. The one called Gordon Brown. The one that has all the charisma of a case of penile warts.

Only stupid idiots jump out of planes...
JackC replied to CobraRover's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Amazing, everyone that answered so far is in the top 0.5% of the accepted IQ distribution. I call bullshit, I've been to speakers corner. -
How do you know what I have experience of? I've been riding for over 30 years and I've tried plenty. So kindly keep your assumptions to yourself OK. ASSUMTIONS???? I read your words, (damn that was a lot of typoes in my last post) "I do strongly" suspect" that they reduce your ability"

I've got Food in my belly and a license for my telly
JackC replied to shropshire's topic in The Bonfire
£142.50 No, one license per household No, they have a list of addresses for houses without licenses. The detector van thing was mostly a ploy to frighten people into paying. A few of the vans that they did have, contained some crude DF kit that never worked, the rest contained an army of clipboard wielding beurocrats with the afore mentioned list. Like most government initiatives, it's 99.9% bullshit. -
Nope, but with in limitations. I've seen some crazy stuff out there, but your average hangers don't really make that big of a difference in handling. To me, manoeuvrability is a fundamental safety feature and one of the main things I look for in a bike and there is no way that ape hangers, highway pegs and suicide shifts can enhance that. No thanks, not for me.

So you're saying that proper packing and body position were the issue? I'm really hoping so because whiplash sucks.

I recently bought a brand new Sabre2 and I was just about ready to send it back and buy a Pilot because it slammed me all the time and opened off heading. Altering my pack jobs and deploying slightly head high seem to have fixed this.

Not reliably. The Barn at Skydance may be the most striking example. It used to be the student LZ, about half a mile north of the main LZ and the DZ. It's as it sounds, a barn with a field on each side. If you look down and think of this as a large building, you're going to be way off, because this barn could store some large jetliners. Fortunately this error would work in your favor in other places, if you err'd it would be on the high side. But if instead you went elsewhere and waited for the new barn to look just as close, you might be counting those windows... I jumped at a small DZ once, not my usual place, and the CCI gave me a very serious warning about eyeballing the altitude at that DZ. The fields in the surrounding area are much smaller than most other places and apparently visitors who eyeball the altitude often find themselves a lot lower than they'd like because of it.

Parents; Do you steal some of your kid's Halloween candy?
JackC replied to JohnRich's topic in The Bonfire
All candy will be confiscated as the proceeds of an extortion racket. Crime doesn't pay. -
When someone is a complete "dick" about advice.
JackC replied to labrys's topic in Safety and Training
Skydiving is an unforgiving sport and people do need to understand that. Unfortunately, for almost every question asked here, someone will think the best response is to bash the poor guy over the head and set him on fire. What that means is anyone tough enough to take the flak or dumb enough to not care, might stick around long enough to take their place in the pecking order of internet assholes. Everyone else just learns not to ask questions. -

My boss says if he ever finds out what it is I actually do, he'll fire me.

You practice until you know it backwards. Every eventuality is rehersed and planned for until your skills are honed to exquisite perfection. The anticipation of that one flawless skydive envelopes your very soul. Exhausted at sunset with beer in hand, your logbook reads "fluffed the exit, pulled low, landed out".

England: Lions and tigers and armed cops! Oh my!
JackC replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
got to agree as it being a non story i don't see what the problem is ?. More surprised that someone was aloud to photograph them due to the amount of hassle photographers are getting with the section 44 law. There have been armed police officers in every British police force area for a long time get over it. You're missing the point. It isn't posted here because it's a good story, it's posted here because it's good propaganda.
