  1. Sampling theory eh? So it's not been proven then. [/sarcasm]
  2. If you ask someone to do your dirty work, pay them their dues. Or don't ask in the first place. I'd be OK with either of those options.
  3. What the fuck is "Obamer" supposed to mean? It's supposed to mean "Obama", as pronounced by some of those oh-so-proper British Broadcasting Corporation talking heads. For some reason, they like to add "r"s to the end of words. I guess it's some kind of British accent thing. "Cuba" becomes "Cuber", "Law" becomes "Lawr", and "Obama" becomes "Obamer". But mostly I spell it that way just because it drives the Obamites absolutely crazy, and they don't even understand why. They can't claim it's racism. They don't have a clue as to why they are offended by it - they just are. And that's tremendously amusing. Just like watching this whole predictable partisan thread unfold from a single seed message. So trolling then.
  4. Good posts Marg. Fundamental research is often percieved as having little monetary worth since the results often cannot be immediately commercially exploited. A good example of this would be Quantum Mechanics. In 1927, in the early days of QM research, physicist Julius Edgar Lilienfeld patented the first field-effect transitor. It took another 22 years before anyone even observed the effect experimentally and it was the 1970's before transistors could be produced commercially. But who could doubt the value of the transistor now? Now go back 100 years and ask "If the information [Quantum Mechanics] isn't worth that much money, why are we buying it, again?"
  5. The lack of understanding here is staggering. Aerosols in this case do not mean CFCs. And neither does this work mean the "tree huggers" have got it wrong. I'd seriously recommend that you take a science course before you put your foot in you mouth again but I'm beginning to think you guys actually like the taste of boot leather.
  6. By effectively capping earnings at £50kpa you stifle entrepreneurial spirit. Why take on extra risks and responsibilities when your earnings will never reflect the extra work? You've just created a nation where mediocrity is the optimum career path. So instead, how about the people stop increasing their needs? Lets not have breast enhancement on the NHS. No IVF treatment on the NHS. No right to council housing for life. Stop handouts to illegal immigrants. etc etc.
  7. If you are in a fight with the enemy, it is acceptable to shoot them. If you capture the enemy, you must abide by the treaties you have signed (including the ones prohibiting torture). It's not about who is president, it's about doing the right thing.
  8. Fair enough. Chicken and Bacon: Cook a slice of bacon so it's almost cooked. Slit a chicken breast open like a pita bread. Slip the bacon into the chicken breast with a slice of cheddar cheese and grill the chicken until cooked. Broccoli and Stilton soup: Boil broccoli in lightly salted water until cooked. Drain off the water and save it. Put a lump of stilton and the broccoli in a blender and blitz adding back the water until it's soup. Chicken with Ginger and Spring onion: Finely chop some spring onions, root ginger and chili. Marinade chicken cubes in the mix along with some soy sauce and rice wine (or dry sherry). Roll in flour and deep fry. Thai Chicken and Lemon Grass soup: Get a good chicken stock, add some cooked chicken, Lemon Grass, finely chopped spring onion, Thai fish sauce, pepper, chili flake and lime zest and simmer for a bit. Squeeze in lime juice and serve hot.
  9. Chicken Ding. Remove packaging. Place in microwave. Cook on full power until a ding is heard. Enjoy.
  10. The people who actually did this should cop for it. The Lawyers who signed this off as legal should cop for it. But most of all and top priority, the people who set this as official policy should cop for it. They all knew what they were doing.
  11. Why buy a motorcycle that can do 165mph when you can go to the dropzone and do 200mph standing on your head?
  12. Nurse! He's out of bed again!
  13. yes it is - the semantics you put up there are meaningless but I'd write it 'god', not "God", since a real atheist would believe there is no kind of deity or higher powers of any kind - and avoid the childish arguments the personify the deity because they don't explain the atheist's belief, only rationalize the disbelief using disdain - they'd have no religion of any kind, no 'spirituality', no 'karma' beliefs, nothing of any kind. pure facts only. at least that would be respectable I don't think I've ever really met someone that fits that bill of sale that calls themselves atheist. Quite a few agnostics (gnostics, whatever) maybe, but not the others. What you seem to be describing is strong atheism. Weak atheism, is simply the lack of a belief in god(s). In the set of all people, the subset who believe in god(s) are called theists, the remainder are atheists.
  14. I know a couple of psychics very well and I don't think they knowingly lie about their abilities, or at least they genuinely believe their powers are real. But I have noticed that psychics are generally quite nosey and have a gift for getting people to open up to them. In fact, they'll do all of the classic cold reading techniques without even noticing that they're doing it. But when they come up against someone who clams up and doesn't give them any feedback, their powers usually come to a shuddering halt. They rely on feedback, spoken and unspoken to confirm their readings so cutting them off or redirecting them is pretty easy. Stage magicians who have studied and perfected cold reading techniques usually out-perform the real psychics by a wide margin simply because they understand this mechanism.
  15. Ptolemy's equant was no more proof of his theory than a tree is proof of the theory that goddidit. I would have expected that a lawyer would know what constitutes proof and what doesn't. Assuming you do know the difference, then the only alternative is that you must be willfully misrepresenting the facts. That may be an acceptable (yet dishonerable) trait for a lawyer, it is not acceptable in science.
  16. For a lawyer, your understanding of the word proof is rather worrying.
  17. That opens the county/city and the department up for a high amount of liability, that's why medics were called. Much better to let them die. Less paperwork.
  18. God should definately not be allowed to take the left seat because he is a notoriously shit pilot.
  19. WTF has that got to do with afirmative action?
  20. Yes, such as the man made climate change argument. No. As contraversial as you think climate change is, it is based on science and therefore it legitimately belongs in science class. Creationism however, is based on superstition and has no basis in science whatsoever. The fact is that if these laws are established, they will leave the US with an education system that is the laughing stock of the developed world. People who think creationism is a valid alternative scientific theory obviously do not understand what science is and they are forcibly condemning their children to be at least as dumb as they are. That is child abuse, plain and simple.
  21. Selling out your childrens education just to get a superstition into a science class, that's nothing short of child abuse.
  22. You don't need examples, just a dictionary. Why do you think discrimination is acceptable?
