  1. hey if they are in a rush, let them go first. if there is one major safety procedure that you as an individual is responsible for.....it is your decision to make to jump out of the plane and if you like the spot or not before exiting. as far as TRUST....I know who on my loads I trust with spotting, but ultimately it is my choice when I will exit on the jump run. Plenty of people have been hurt from a poor spot. The pilot might be very accurate but it is YOUR decision. Just my 2 cents. marc "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton

  6. That's cause Britain controlled the Portuguese economy for centuries! All the Port riches from their colonies ended up in Bank of England one way or another! mp
  7. I had many friends living in Chile during the Allende years. One friend has a photo he took of Allende at his last press conference the day before he was murdered. When the coup happened, my friend was robbed of his passport/id by chileano soldiers and saved by a family who found him cowering behind some boxes in the shadows, and hid him in their home until it was safe to go to the US embassy. His description of that time was very similar to that shown in the great movie"MISSING" with Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemmon. I highly recommend that movie. Lemmon plays a father who comes to Chile looking for his missing activist son, not believing that the US could be complicit in all that mess, and discovering how wrong he could be. At the time of the coup, Chile was filled with people who had fled those other south american countries where the CIA/USGovt had already managed to evoke dictatorships...notably Argentina, Uruguay, and Brasil. These people, often highly educated and dedicated to social change, were able to live freely in Chile where in their own countries they would have been tortured, imprisioned (as many were), killed. You could call them 'leftists' or whatever label, but I knew them as loving concerned people. A couple of those brazilian friends told me they were tortured by the same guys (both brazilian AND US) that tortured them during the early stages of the Brasilian coup in 1964-68! They told stories of the infamous soccer stadium filled with arrested people who had to watch people being tortured and shot on the field in front of them. The famous singer Victor Jara had his hand chopped off and was forced to play guitar. He banged on the guitar with his stub and sang one last protest song before they shot him. Yeah today Chile is a beacon of stability in Latin America.....but it was built on some awful foundations. Freeflychile, you haven't heard the whole story from your family. Thanks Kallend for copying that extended article.

  12. Sorry to hear about it. I was hanging out with Scotty at the BombSquad table for a long time Sunday. He did a 'POPS' skydive with Mark, Sandy, Dan and Nan, the dirt dive looked so cool I wanted to see video. He also told a funny story about his restaurant at Elsinore, sounded like a great hangout. I also mentioned to him how there was a thread with RW photos last week on dz.com where someone asked who the guy with the purple dreadlocks was....hehheheh.... Well, he's a tough SOB so I know he will recover quickly. Hugs from Marc and Alysse "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton
  13. As always, great advice on Brasil from Wendy You can hang-glide OR paraglide (called parapente). The place to find them is at the Praia de Pepino Beach below Gavea, they will drive you up the mountain. Both of us did parapente last january, and I stayed up 40 minutes at sunset, with views of two sides of the mountain, it was GREAT! In the evening, LAPA is the happening place. There are lots of great music places there. Our favorite is RIO SCENARIUM. Two Sundays ago there was an article in the New York Times about that nitelife area: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?sec=travel&res=9D04E6D6153EF935A15752C1A9609C8B63 List of clubs from the article: Carioca da Gema (79 Avenida Mem de Sá; 55-21-2221-0043, www.barcariocadagema.com.br) lays claim to being one of the first casas do samba to return to Lapa. A slightly older crowd isn't shy about thronging the air-conditioned dance floor. Entrance ranges from 14 to 16 reais. Closed on Sundays. Mangue Seco (23 Rua do Lavradio; 55-21-3852-1947) milks nostalgia with a retro décor and an impressive cachaça collection. No charge Mondays and Tuesdays; other days 10 to 12 reais; closed Sundays. Rio Scenarium (20 Rua do Lavradio; 55-21-3147-9005; www.rioscenarium.com.br) is big, glitzy and accessible, with an antiques-laden room for every proclivity. Entrance is 15 reais on weekdays, 25 on weekends; closed Sundays and Mondays. Clube dos Democráticos (91 Rua do Riachuelo; 55-21-2252-4611). With a cameo in the film ''Madame Satã,'' this circa-1867 ballroom embodies Lapa's marriage of historical setting and youthful vitality. Open Wednesdays through Sundays; 8 to 12 reais. Estrela da Lapa (69 Avenida Mem de Sá; 55-21-2507-6686; www.estreladalapa.com.br) is large and glossy, without being anonymous or excessively chic. Closed Sundays and Mondays; 15 to 25 reais. Centro Cultural Carioca (237 Rua Sete de Setembro; 55-21-2252-6468; www.centroculturalcarioca.com.br). The floor-to-ceiling windows that typify Lapa here offer a view of a plaza with stunning Portuguese-style architecture; the stage is 100 percent Brazilian. Usually around 15 reais; closed Sundays. Also in that area, CIRCO VOADOR is a great spot for Brazilian rock and roll! Have a great time!!! Marc "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton

  15. bach flower remedies seem to work even on animals. the one called rescue remedy seems to work for many situations. once a friend was in the hospital, with high fever and tremors. I put a drop on his forehead and the fever dropped within moments and tremors stopped. "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton

  20. To differ from the above posts, I have used Nationwide for both our cars for over 12 years, and the few times I needed them they never gave me any hassles. Quickly investigated and resolved all issues. One time someone hit Alysse's car while it was parked, one nite a raccoon walked in front of my car while driving home from zhills (the little f*er did some damage!), another time some old fogey side swiped me...... My rates have gone up somewhat over the years, but so has everything....! Perhaps the agent one uses is a factor...mine is very helpful. marc
  21. Definitely it is worth it! Check out the many threads about it in the Wind Tunnel Forum! mp "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton
  22. You so funny! Being a load organizer raises your numbers alot! Many of them are freefliers, does being on the same jump run count? I checked out the PMS site...Tami sure has been busy initiating the ladies of ZHills...but I don't see Laura's photo? I was part of a PMS initiation skydive, with Tami, Alysse, Bucky, and Andrea, but I had to lurk until the Barbie had been passed around, then I could join in on the rest of the RW.... I counted around 30+ that I have had the pleasure of doing RW with! Marc "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton
  23. Bob, all the best in your travels! I just finished reading Shantaram a few weeks ago, it really does bring back walking through Bombay. It sure is a huge book (1000 pages) to carry along in a backpack! While I was in Delhi I read a very good book about it, called City of Djinns, by William Dalrymple. Highly recommended. Sounds like you are traveling well....meeting people and allowing the 'coincidences' to guide you. I look forward to reading more of your emails. Marc
  24. Happy B'Day from your weekend neighbors! Love, Marc and Alysse "The reason angels can fly is that they take themselves so lightly." --GK Chesterton
