I also prefer topmount. I used to feel my neck slightly after days with 8-10 jumps when i had my HC39 sidemounted. I currently jump a heavier setup ( HC5 + Eos350D) mounted on top and I do not have the neck feelings these days. ... A disadvantage of this top mounted system is getting out of a Cessna 206 with a rolling door. Once you're out it's all good. and on larger aircraft this issue is non existent Another big disadvantage of the topmount is the fact you can't see your canopy as well if you have a twist : it sometimes has taken some guesswork to know what way to kick it out A big disadvantage of the side mount was that i kept "ramming" my camera on my risers when i was looking around under canopy ... ( I am fairly slim so my risers are close to eachother, doesn't leave a lot of spare headroom) -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

I haven't found a good way of making a deflector yet. I've created some versions and none satisfies me. All seem to add more of a snag hazard. At least in this setup it will break when it gets hit. Gear i can replace, my body is a bit more of a hassle to repair. In my opinion thats a safer option than keeping the gear intact and getting stuck. -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Hey. For the last 2 years i've been riding my 750 euro Mountainbike. That seems to be the sweet spot for me. before i had a 500 euro bike wich had a lot of problems. Although i've upgraded the front fork making it more of a 1000 euro bike after half a year. Depending on location, riding style and the frequency and distance of the rides you might -want- a slightly more or less expensive bike. Try to go for at least Deore level ( or SRAM equivalent) components and stay away from SR suntour RST front forks. try to get something like a RockShock Tora or equivalent. Bikes like these tend to set you back about 700-800 euro's around here. At this level you won't get the latest and greatest and not the lightest as well but something proven, robust and reliable. Don't fall for tricks with expensive rear deraillers and entry level components on the rest of the bike. it's a marketing trick they have been using the last couple of years so they can say they're selling you a Deore/XLT/XT bike while the rest of the components are Alivio or worse. I'm personally not a fan of disk brakes but i live in a flat and wet area. In dry and hilly terrain with long decents disks could have an advantage. ( disk tend to make a lot of noise when wet. i once borrowed one for a muddy ride.) Depending on terrain you might want rear suspension but a decent fully will cost about 200-300 dollar/euro more then an equivalent set up hardtail. Personally( in the Netherlands) i think a hardtail cross country bike will suffice. ( considering your name my guess is you're dutch or south african but people seem to be able to move across the globe these days :) ) -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

I'm doing this part time study to make my job pay well ;) As mentioned I currently do not have the financial reserves to ditch the HC5. Personally I prefer the HC5 before the file-based camera's due to the tapes. ( My mac loves tape based camera's :) ) and i have the feeling the colors are better. I'm still working out some kind of deflector. I will get there. my first version seemed to pose more of a snag hazard then a protection :) -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

well, This way i can always reach the screen and controls of the video camera. If i move the stills to that side i will have the roughly same problem with the remote connector on the 350D. also i will be moving my stills lens ( and so : it's weight) to/over the edge. The way it is setup now had less disadvantages :) -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Ok. I'll try to work out some kind of deflector as you mention.. Tnx for the suggestion -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

I assume the original hype-eye /hype eye mini functions in a way similar to the cam-eye II, considering they are all LANC based controls. I used a Cam-eye II for a while and the problem I occasionally had was I turned the camera off when I bumped my head on the ceiling of our airplane. For me that -after the zoom locking- is the big advantage of the hype eye Thanks for thinking with me though. -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Hi guys, Between studying for my last 2 exams this year ( part time studies, a full time job and good weather are a bad combination ;) ) I'm fiddling with my Camera setup. After the building of the top-plate I've mounted everything and the setup is functional and lined out. Almost ready to use. What i don't really like is the distance the hype-eye D-connector is sticking out of my camera, over the edge of the plate. I cannot mount the camera more to the center of the helmet due to the space my stills is taking this way. I know this would not be an issue if I would update my HC5 with a CX105 because these have their D-connector on the rear but that's not an option right now. Is anyone aware of a male-female D-connector cable with a more compact plug / sharper corner on the camera side ? Or is there a "safe" way of modifying this side of the cable on the hype-eye ? -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Tnx for your the imput. I will finishing this as a side to side setup. Pictures will follow in about 2 weeks if you'd like. Grtz -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

hi guys. Tnx for the input. In case of the side by side configuration... THe downside of this will probably be when I will be jumping with only the HC-5 ( FS4 training/competition ) Is - in your experience - the imbalance of this setup with just 1 camera mounted big or is it negligible in comparison to a sidemount setup ? ( the horizontal distance to the center of gravity seems smaller compared to my old sidemount setup) Grtz -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Hey All, After a couple of years of video ( Currently Sony HC-5 with raynox .3, no intentions of replacing it for a couple of years) i'm interested in mounting my 350D on my vapor narrow as well. I've tried searching the forums but was not able to produce a satisfying answer. I'm currently in the process of building a top plate to mount the stills under. I prefer this to a L bracket to keel things as compact as possible. Before i start cutting the freshly made plate i'm wondering if there is any advantage of mounting the stills camera next to the video. I will probably not be taking the stills along on 2/3rd of the jumps. for now. The jump ship on the stills jumps will probably be a c206 so headroom is a bit sparse ( even without camera equipment :) ) I am aware of the balance issues if i mount it on front. When i do it I will probably need to move the video more forward to keep the stills lense out of view. creating even more of a balance issue. If I Build it side-to-side, what are besides the balance improvements things i should know ? The helmet is a vapor narrow so the snag points are a bit more articulated. Any other negative ( or positive notes ? ) Witch setup is easier to maneuver in small aircraft ? The CarbonFiber + GlassFiber top plate is currently wide enough to enable either one of these options. -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

I wouldn't try it that way. You might have a cosmetic solution but structurally it is seems worthless. Carbon fiber relies on the fibers for it's strength. If it is cracked you have lost the strength on that location. I've once repaired an old cracked Glass fiber helmet for a buddy by sanding down the paint and applying a set of large CF patches on top of them You 'll have to apply patches that are large enough to transfer the forces applied to the helmet. -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

----- For commercial use i would say yes. but for training and especially for competition the risk of half a second of lost data is far worse then the reduced quality. most of my camera work is for debriefing/scoring and therefore standard DV is a valid option. I chose the HC5 for it's -proven- track record ... durable, reliable and user friendly ( top loading tape, Firewire on the camera itself,... ) the High definition part wasn't that important to me. It is a shame i haven't had a chance to jump it in DV settings because the competition got cancelled ... The seating not something new to me. i used to do this with my previous cam but haven't done it on this one. I do not know why i did it or quit doing it... Something for the future to try i guess ... -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Hi Guys, I've updated my system by using a neoprene condom and using HD tape instead of the regular (orange) "premium" from sony. I only use sony tape and always new tapes. This weekend's competition ( Cold and wet) i've only had one dropout in 6 jumps. A fellow video flyer mentioned a memory issue with the HC5 while coding HDV, He switched to recording standard DV and said that solved it for him. I. switched to DV recording now and hope to see the problem disappear. I'll keep you updated when i know more. I also hope it stops raining so we can get out and play :) Greetings -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Hey Saskia, Yes, it fits your description, only when capturing a sequence it gets recognised as 2 different sequences. Isn't cleaning after 2 months of use since new and 4 new tapes a bit fast for dirty heads ? I'll clean it anyway. I seem have enoudh time for that today. :) -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

Hi Guys, I've been jumping my HC5 for about 2 months now and never had a problem. 2 weeks ago i had some issues with the camera "losing" roughly 1 second of data occasionaly. This happened on tape and after dubbing it is visible some data is actually missing. I thought it was due to the rig i borrowed after my reserve. That rig had a magnetic slider holder. Yesterday on my own rig without any magnetic parts i had no issues. Today on the first training jump on the exit it occured again. It usually occurs around or just after exit. The camera is top mounted and is operated with a Hype-eye D pro. The camera is naked ( no box, no condom ) I tried switching to a new tape to see if the issue is still there and it didn't solve the problem. I now switched tape to another batch to see what this does. EDIT: Using another tape of a different production batch did not help. Can it be moisture, temperature or electronics ? Has anyone else ever seen this problem, or better yet. solved it ? Greetings from a rainy dropzone in Belgium, Leon -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

The first 2 pics are from the Nvertigo clone I've finished today. I borrowed a clean helmet from a friend and made a plaster copy of that. after some modifications on the plaster shape I laminated it with fiberglass and carbon fiber and epoxy. Finished with black lacquer, and after some more filling of imperfections ands sanding it to make it more smooth, i decided to sand it after the final layer of black paint and sand parts of it off so it will look a bit more "damaged" ( It also draws so much attention to the imperfections the imperfections themselves don't seem so obvious) The chin cup is a part a mate had lying around. I am planning to make some kind of box after i've decided on the camera. Pic # 3 is from a Z1 clone I did 2 years ago, Bought a 2nd hand visor, and worked on a plaster copy of a real one i borrowed. Sadly enough i never could get the closing system just right. (opens up while spotting our c 182) so I ended up buying a 2nd hand Z1 and painting it the way I wanted. Also in pic # 3 in the right top corner you can see my first home made helmet i did in 2004 :) Stopped using it since i started using full face. I found it unusable to mount a camera setup because the thing is so "lumpy" Enjoy watching my 2nd hobby :) either the Nvertigo and the Z1 clone cost me roughly 30-40 hours to finish, This includes Making the plaster copy, the helmet, finishing the helmet, making the padding, lining the helmet with neoprene face/neck flaps Both helmets have cost about € 100 (~ $ 120)to build ... ( including the chin cup( nvertigo clone) and visor( Z1 clone) this is well worth the effort considering both helmets cost about € 250 over here. -------- www.youtube.com/l0013

why are there som much people who can afford it in ways even i couldn't imagine i have 175 since sept 2000 and i 'm one of the faster ones i'd rather have less time to spend and more money, in that case i would jump more average is about 3 jumps every jumpable weekend... -------- www.youtube.com/l0013
