Terry Schiavo family to help brain-dead Oakland Girl
FreefallingCari replied to jclalor's topic in Speakers Corner
May I ask what your profession is? Jahi is not in a PVS. She has been declared brain dead. Many not within the healthcare field are not aware of the differences. A PVS is a disorder of actual consciousness. They are not 'aware' or conscious, but they can be aroused. Terri Shiavo was in a PVS. She was able to respond to painful stimuli, etc. A person in a PVS is affected by pain stimuli, though they are brain damaged. There is no actual blood flow in the cerebellum at all within Jahi's, per medical reports which were online and reported on via the news. I understand wanting a job, however, it does not make ethical or fiscal sense to keep a corpse alive for years on end. We can force a heart to beat for a long time, thanks to IV fluids and medications. AND YES, healthcare costs an enormous amount money. Part of these inflated costs are due to situations like THIS. People visiting ER's for a cold or allergies, pregnancy tests, etc.. I feel terrible for this child, but keeping a dead body alive is not ethical, cost effective, or within the realm of reason. "Our bodies are wired to respond to hypercarbia by increasing the breathing rate and triggering other muscle responses in an effort to correct the situation, resulting in panic and distress (our suffocation response)." Yes, they are. HOWEVER, strong narcotic pain medications like Morphine or Dilaudid are effective at stopping that "air hunger" sensation and it's movement related effects on the body. It does not stop the condition, but it stops the distress sensation. As a Nurse who has worked Hospice, I have seen countless dying people made a LOT more comfortable with potent doses of narcotics. As an FYI to add to this conversation.... We COULD give these people potent doses of narcotics to prevent the distress of hypoxia. Skydiver Survivor; Battling Breast Cancer one jump at a time. I am a Nurse, so I had to comment. PROZAC is an SSRI antidepressant, it is not in the same class as valuim, versed, or Benzodiazepines. THERE, I feel much better! Although the drugs are untested, medically speaking they are in a class which causes amnesia and loss of pain sensation. This would create a painless death. It is completely illogical to compare Terri Shiavo to Jahi. Mrs Shiavo was in a persistent vegetative state, Jahi is brain dead. As a side note, my own husband knows what I want, it is written in stone too.. He knows that I would not want to be kept alive if I was in a persistent vegetative state. As a Nurse, I am compassionate, I feel terribly for the family. It really sucks when rare complications occur, we do our best to prevent these from occurring. This poor girl is dead. We can keep her body alive for years, but that makes no sense. SHE is gone, her body is a shell. So sad. This is another reason why healthcare costs continue to rise in this country. We literally keep dead people alive through expensive, 10,000-30,000 day life support treatments. Skydiver Survivor; Battling Breast Cancer one jump at a time. Skydiving….Why keep doing it?

People always ask if I am an adrenaline junkie, like danger, etc. I am ADD and have aspergers, so I am very hyper and I make a lot of body movements. Even with medication, although it helps. When I am free falling in the air, bellyflying, I feel such a sense of calm and peace.I enjoy the sensation. It is as if my body is finally moving as quickly as my brain, and it all evens out. I believe I have expressed this correctly, it is difficult to explain. My body is able to be still, and I am able to fly and fly with others well. It is like therapy for me. I continue because it is my therapy, it makes me feel whole. I also enjoy the social aspect, as I tend to be socially awkward, and skydiving is a common theme I can relate to. Hi everyone. I just started AFP recently, and I will be jumping my Hop n' Pop's on Sunday, along with 3-4 extra jumps. I have been jumping several times a week so that I can finish quickly, and keep the new skills fresh. I am a Nurse, and one of my coworkers bought me a tandem jump as a surprise. I had 3 tandem jumps, fell in love with it, and the rest is history. It's like therapy. I can have have a bad week, but once I jump it ALL goes away.
