7 cell vll 9 cell: the safire definately got a better glide due to reduced drag, and because of the icreased speed i find the flare a lot more powerful and easier to stage. definately better landings on the safire, very easy and soft

Body position on high performace openings

I'll try to be at least a little constructive given your facts (although you should seriously jump something else first): I've been jumping a Katana 120 first for about 100-150 jumps, now about 50 jumps on a Katana 107 flying it at around 1.92. Trust me, with the right body position and good packing it really opens like a charm! In all those jumps i maybe had 2 or 3 twist, like one twist in the lines, which always cleared itself. The openings are the best i ever had on any canopy! Just relax, keep your body symmetrical through the whole process and don't try to steer the opening, just go with it, because of the delay of input you will only make things worse and counter motion results in line twists. While packing just keep everything 100% symmetrical and don't fuck around with the nose. I usually look up at the opening, if that doesn't affect your overall body position you can go with it, works perfectly with me. Good luck, you'll need it! -
Packed tons of canopies: the step from getting it from the ground into the bag is the least important one in my experience as long as you don't fuck up your work before (but it it acutally very easy to do with the right technique, asked your packer). First, get the lines aligned and keep a good tension, then fold everything nicely, set the slider all the way to the grommets and put it on the ground. As long as you don't slide all the way over the canopy it doesn't really matter how it looks in the bag as long as it is more or less symetrical. Stowing the lines is quite important too, but that doesn't seem to be a problem here.

Got the semi stowless bag but in a Paratec Next container, jumping a Katana 107 WL close to 2. Works like a charm: definately improved my openings, they are still as soft, but fewer offheading and panorama openings. It is even a little faster to pack and there are only 2 rubbers that can break which is a nice bonus too ;-) would definately recommend it! Can't really see any downside to it if used and sized properly.

Of course it's always good to have visual reference points such as the ground or your altimeter, but the reality is quite different. Most people i see jumping have two audibles (like myself) and rely 100% on them. Since bigger group jumps especially in freefly with planned formations are always a very complex thing, the second or two it might take you to check your altimeter actually also mean a big risk factor as you are no longer aware of your surroundings (plus depending on the position you're flying it might actually be counterproductive). Losing awareness in a big group at high speed means that you can build up some fairly high relative speeds which can cause injury. I am convinced that if 4,5,6 or even more people jump together, everybody wearing 2 audibles, it's safe enough to rely on them. You'll notice when everybody tracks away if the unthinkable happens and both of your audibles fail ;-) i know many people will not like this, but this is the reality

Hi, this is a very complex topic that depends on many factors. If you want to keep it to the basics: moving your arms further behind increases your angle of attack, therefor you will get a faster descendrate but also more forward speed. Pulling them forward will decrease your angle of attack, therefor you will have a slower fallrate but also slower forward speed. Pulling your knees forward while keeping the same aoa will slow you down, in combination with an increased aoa plus different arm positions you can get quite an efficient track though that way. Of course you wouldn't start spinning, but as you said you would end up in a nose dive (headdown) which is still a very bad position to pull in ;-)

I guess it's mostly because of the loss of altitude you would experience if pulling in collapsed position as you would start falling again.

One of the problems I see is that if you don't find your handle immediately and fumble around because of your extended leg wing and collapsed arm wings you will probably end up head down.

Sure is, and to be honest, i don't think this question matters at all ;-) but just try to close your eyes on a short delay hop n pop, you will notice how the canopy starts to inflate and you swing forward while you can feel the riser tuck tabs open :-) -

Actually this is the point where you switch from belly to standup position, which is the point of time when the canopy comes out of the bag and starts to inflate, not when your lines are unstowing. You can see that you get more vertical inbetween those two shots, the unstowing of the lines doesn't create enough pull force for that. -

The riser covers open as soon as you switch from a belly to earth to a standup position, which is the point after the canopy comes out of the bag and starts to inflate. -
Yes! With risers twisted unevenly canopies will start to turn. On elliptical canopies this will result in quite a fast turn comparing to the more square 7 cell canopies depending on the amount of riser offset. While spinning fast it might get really hard to kick out and you have to act quickly because of the blood moving from your head to your legs.

Looks like it's a sewn pocket only accessible from the top where you simply push the lines in figure 8 in and afterwards reducing the size of the opening by closing the 2 tuck flaps. Not sure though.

From my experience (also as a packer) you can make a lot of canopies fit in containers quite well actually they are not designed for. 30 sqft too small or too big are possible to pack in a way so it fills up the corners and gives the whole container the same look and with a little adjustment on the loop the same pin pressure as a perfect fitting canopy. Depends on many factors, but if you vary the size of your S-folds, how much air you actually keep in the canopy (how fluffy you pack it) and so on you can really change a lot! -

Had a similar situation but on a Paratec Next Century Rig with a UPT semi stowless bag. The rig was made for a 139, and when i first put in the Katana 107 i'm currently jumping it looked even worse than yours. I just played around with the loop lengh and started doing "bigger" packjobs, where the canopy fully fills the dbag and maybe even a little bit bigger. Works like a charm, looks like a standart fitting container now. Just try around, it will work at least better than this :-) hope this helps -
There are those Anti-Fog wipes you can order from chutingstar, been using them and they work great! They also always ship one with any G3 you buy. Hope that helps.

It does create drag before there is tenson on the bridle, although this is a lot less compared to a pilot chute with a tensioned bridle where the material can form to half a sphere (more or less) which has much higher drag coefficient. This is because it's already exposed to the air rushing past the freefalling jumper, whereas the speed of the pilot chute in relation to the jumper is close to zero at launch.

New helmet results in weird openings -- help!

How about you put your chin on your breast during the actual throw of the pilot chute till you can feel that you are seated up. After checking the airspace during pull time i got used to this behaviour, with me especially because i can move my camera further away from risers and so on. But this might also avoid your risers hitting against your helmet, which i think is the case here and might cause the offheading openings. It's just an idea. Just do that for the 1.5 seconds it takes from throw to being seated up. I guess your risers are so close together because of your tight chest strap that your helmet just doesn't fit in between, especially if you got a small shoulder width too. -

Hi, i think it's actually not so much about creating more drag, that you can just achieve by choosing a bigger sized pc. I think it's more about minimizing the oszillation of the pilotchute during deployment which causes the packjob to rotate, and with that cause offheading deployments. Might be a cool thing to have on high performance canopies where this might be a bigger factor to come into play if the costs of the pc aren't too high. Not too much of a use with bigger canopies in my opinion. If might become a cool gadget, but if there is really need for that is another question. edited to add: wrote an email to squirrel requesting the cad designs, took them 2!!!!! minutes to reply, sick. next time i need a wingsuit i know where to order ;-)
