Emergency exit for first hop and pop
CornishChris replied to scottd818's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I had a similr situation with my HnP on AFF but the engine actually stopped. I had 5 static line jumps so 4k was no biggie. Well done. On a side note I used to jump at a DZ in Oz that made AFF students do three hop n pops to graduate - from memory it was 5k, 4k, 3k. Just to get them more used to exiting low. I thought it was a good idea. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people -
Low pull + CYPRES fire + near miss with tree.
CornishChris replied to labrys's topic in Safety and Training
I once did 30 mins in the tunnel (mainly sit flying) then headed to the DZ for a jump. I could barely hold a sit and whilst pulling was easy I struggled under canopy as I just hadn't realised how weak I was and found flaring, turning exhausting. I took a very gentle canopy ride back and was fine on landing but it scared me. I have subsequently never flown tunnel then jumped. Lessons sometimes need to be learned well done for not dying and well done for being brave enough to risk the armchair quarterback abuse that comes with the posting of any such video on DZ.com. Lesson learned methinks and hopefully not just by you. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people -
A nameless friend of mine had something similar. 1500+ jumps, on a JVX79 with spinning line twists. He managed to take his a step further and pulled silver instead of cutaway. he then fought for a while trying to work out why his risers hadn't released. Eventually (after flat line had stopped) he pulled what he thought was his reserve as a last ditch attempt to live and ended up under his reserve with twists having finally cutaway. He put that don to the G force/hypoxia. It was not his first cutaway and he was unable to come up with any other explanation. he was on the next load under a borrowed canopy! Downwind landing techniques
CornishChris replied to Jockeyshifter63's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I used to work in helicopters and there was a pilot I flew with alot who, when he was flying, used to have one eye open for an 'out' in case of an engine failure. We flew round Sydney, Australia, once and as we flew he pointed out as a running commentary where he would land. I took this to heart with flying my canopy too and always try and keep an eye out for my options. In your situation it looks like, other than flying in brakes which maybe didn't help, you made it down uninjured so you did OK but try to think about your options earlier in the flight, that way if you need them you've already worked them out and it gives you one less think to worry about. You pick a particularly gruesome crime to make your point. Did the innocents killed by the government deserve to die just so you could get this guy? CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

Mildly racist apparently. I assume it bands everyone in some way as a racist. Worked fine on my Mac. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

More Gropro footage - be careful out there!
CornishChris replied to Rover's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
It's interesting that it pulled the Go=Pro off, by the looks of things. Mine is just attached using the sticky pad but I know of others who have screwed the attachment on, which I would consider more dangerous. It's all about risk. The OP incident could have been caused by a camera box, a hand, a foot etc. The Go-Pro is still a camera and a snag point and should be treated with respect. The paraglider collapse and subsequent hook up could have happened on many camera helmets - the ones I dislike and the bolt on brackets, just crying out for an incident. To pick up on another thread is there likely to be a Go-Pro related skydiving fatality? Probably, in the same way there are likely to be camera related fatalities, collision related fatalities etc. Treat the whole sport with respect and remember you have a stupid snag point right on top of your head. Lastly, the guy on the paraglider would have benefited from a cutaway system... CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people -

I'm mildly surprised that there has been nothing on here about the Murdoch/News Corp issues in the UK. In short one of the newspapers owned by Rupert Murdoch has been involved in a high profile phone hacking scandal. This started several years ago with them hacking the answer phones of celebrities in an attempt to get stories. This was investigated weakly several years ago. In the last few weeks it has come out that parties working on behalf of the paper tried, and in many cases succeeded to hack the phones of 9/11 victims; families of soldiers killed in action in Iraq & Afghanistan; the prime minister and, worst of all, child murder victims. With the latter, in one instance, the answer-phone became full and so the interfering parties deleted messages in order to allow more to be left. This prompted hope on behalf of the girls parents that she may still be alive and checking her phone. She was not and her killer was finally bought to justice last month. The fallout of this has resulted in the arrest of the then editor of the offending paper, The News of the World. News Corp has closed the paper in question resulting in the loss of many jobs but it's essentially a rebrand and some element will relaunch. The media pressure, added to that from parliament, has caused News Corporation to pull out of a planned takeover of British Sky Broadcasting (the largest TV platform in the UK and operator of dozens of channels). What does everyone think? To what level can a paper dig for information for a story? Is Murdoch evil and unfit to run a news company as much of the media is making out or is it nothing to do with him? I'm pretty sure the punishment for robbery isn't death. I also don't believe the pharmacist should be judge, jury and executioner. He was right to defend himself. He was wrong to reload and execute. Example made. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people -

Thanks Guys - mystery solved as quickly as I thought. I searched T-6 Duxford and there are dozens of photos of the exact plane! I will post some more when I have them - the best so far is the Lancaster Bomber that passes over the house at about 150 feet - just magnificent! You may also be interested to know that there is an American War Memorial in our village as a flight group flying Mustangs was stationed here during the war... Edited to Add: I think it may have been a Harvard that William Ash jumped out of to 'test' his parachute during the war. In his book 'Under the Wire' he talks about being issued a bail out rig and him and a friend took up a plane at night, flew it upside down and he jumped to see if it worked - a pioneer of our sport and all round legend. I am lucky enough to live very near the Imperial War Museum at RAF Duxford in Cambridgeshire, UK. As such not only do I get free membership I also get to see all of the planes flying over my house. I snapped this one a few days ago but am having a struggle to identify it - can anyone help. I honestly believe this will take the brains on here about 30 seconds... CJP Gods don't kill people. For all you Green light Jumpers and Newbies out there
CornishChris replied to Squeak's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree - you need to check around the plane too, as ground control should be doing to give clear drop. I did that and it didn't stop me nearly hitting a glider at about 5k over Oxfordshire 5 yrs ago. Lots of little fluffy clouds and a nearby gliding club (that we jump in harmony with, they stay below 1k), and I sure as hell didn't see the glider until I nearly hit it. We need to try our best to avoid these things but sometimes shit happens. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people -
If you want to go on board the private airplane out of the private airport then you need to abide by the security provisions put in place. If not don't fly. There was an interesting show in the UK about the liquid bomb plot that was foiled. The bombers were planning to take on board liquid explosive's in drinks bottles and blow them up, hence us now not being able to take liquids on board. They were also planning to take their kids and wives on board and possibly put the liquids in their bags. There are people out there that still wish to do us, the West, damage. Like it or not the TSA are doing what they are doing for the protection of the masses. As far as I am concerned the minority can fuck their whining about privacy if it stops just one attack being foiled. The rest of us who wish to fly just deal with it and realise it is for the greater good. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

I struggle to understand how, as what appears to be an active BASE jumper, you can hold that view. The margin for error in BASE is so much lower than that of skydiving. Given the number of active jumpers in both disciplines the accident/fatality rates are far higher in BASE as well. I have several friends that have BASEd and a few who continue to do so, several who don't - one because he is dead (from a BASE jump) and one because he spent 8 weeks in a coma, (from a BASE jump). Not one of my BASE friends would ever say BASE was safer than skydiving. I know you caveat 'when done the right way' but I still fundamentally disagree with you. I know that in the BASE world I am probably not allowed to even express an opinion however as I don't jump. CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

True America does make some great wine but there have been vineyards in the UK since Roman times. With the climate getting warmer the weather in the south of England is now akin to that of the Champagne region a hundred years or so ago and the English wine industry is going through something of a boom. The biggest issue is that there just isn't the space for the size of vineyard you see in the US or Oz so most of these vineyards, whilst some create excellent wine, are never going to see it exported internationally. My favourite is Camel Valley Brut which is a sparkling pinot from Camel Valley Vineyard near Bodmin in Cornwall. I shall be going there in a few days (its a 5 hr drive but I'm heading to wonderful Cornwall for the Bank Holiday) and will be stocking up! CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people

Agreed, haggis is good. There is a lot of great British food (Roast Beef & Yorkshire pudding, Steak & Kidney pie, Fish & Chips, Apple Crumble, Spotted Dick & Custard), and there is some pretty bad British food (Deep fried Mars bar, black pudding (although I actually quite like it), eel pie) and I am sure the same is true in the states. Your great contribution to world food: McDonalds & KFC. Oh, and the corn dog although I'm still not sure what they are. Every country has its pros and cons. CJP Gods don't kill people. I'd love to know the story behind the Islander stall shown in that thread... Edited to add: And the search function works once again... CJP Gods don't kill people. People with Gods kill people -
I think a jumpmaster should be nominated on every load (as is done in the UK) and that person should be held to account for the running of the load - exit order, separation etc. I don't think the DZ should pay for that person - many have a hard enough time making money anyway.
