  1. Pinky ... totally agreed. I'm off AFF status now ... 40 jumps in and so tired of the bruises. I'm still downsizing too ... but this question is great!
  2. At my DZ, you are on radio until you are comfortable with the landing pattern and landing on your own. The person on the ground has been doing this for so long he knew where 1000ft, 600ft and 300 ft was and could tell you when you needed to turn if you werent sure. Also, he knew just when to flare. Its similar - like having training wheels. Its annoying when you think you have it, then you PLF.
  3. Im fairly certain i was looking out ... i kept reminding myself to look out and not down ... i know its not going to come perfectly for a while, but i just want to stop my rough landings ...
  4. Somehow, on jump #24, something clicked and i had the softest landing i've ever had ... it was a beautifully timed 2-stage flare ... then on #25 and my first jump as a licensed skydiver #26, i had 2 hard landings. I know i ended up flaring too early on both of them. Back to square one and trying to figure out the perfect time to flare ... On #24, i did some practice flares in the air, and i think what helped was i did a couple with my eyes closed. Just need to keep practicing!
  5. That is next on my list =) Just hoping that i can nail this stand up landing. I think when it happens, i'm going to have the light bulb turn on and say "damn, now i get it"
  6. This makes a lot of sense ... now its just putting it into practice, you know?I'm hoping that if i end up flaring too early, i can just hold it at half brakes until i am close enough to the ground ... i think i just need to hold my half brakes a little more. Patience, its hard when the ground is coming at you.
  7. This is great advice as well. Thank You! I have been working on the 2-stage flare, but just havent been able to time it exactly right. Last week, i had a rough landing ... just 1 jump due to high winds. Im hoping jump #24 i can figure this out! 2 more until the possibility of getting my A license ... but i have to stand up this landing. With that being said ... the 2-stage has been working better. But i am still flaring early. I think i'm looking down instead of out. And thats just tough not to do. So much to think about ... and its hard to not be hard on myself. Thanks again
  8. So, i think as a student thats probably not allowed ... but then again, i havent asked. Would have loved to pull super high and have a ton of time under canopy. We'll see what happens this weekend ...
  9. By high-pull ... how high do you mean? The jump i made on Thursday, i pulled at 5500 ... certainly not "high". But, i was able to do a few practice flares. Hoping this weekend i can get out of my own head and nail it.
  10. So we were talking last week about flaring ... I got to jump Thursday afternoon and had a pretty rough landing. Both instructors on the ground said it looked like i went into half brakes too soon and ended up flaring at the wrong time ... possibly too late. Still trying to figure this out. Appreciate your advice. Gonna work on my flaring skills this weekend (assuming the winds cooperate)
  11. Appreciate the information!! Thanks for the welcome ... loving every single second of it.
  12. Totally okay on the assumption ... It happens. I think i need to watch myself flare up high and know that i finishing it out ... More canopy time, thats what i need. Thanks for the great advice.
  13. Thanks for the information ... In the beginning i was definitely just doing a 1-stage flare ... but my coach recommended i try the 2-stage. I understand it and can feel the difference .... However, i do wonder if the 3-stage would be easier? Also ... i am short and have wondered if my short-arms are holding me back from flaring fully?
  14. I was thinking I was going to do that ... I love freefall but i need time to do some canopy work. I was actually planning to wave off and pull by 6000 ... and already know I need to tell everyone on the load :) I do wonder if i am completely finishing my flare ... BTW, i'm female ... short and quite sturdy (they do have me on a 280 still). I don't have the longest arms so i have a feeling i may not be completely finishing my flare ... but that extra time under canopy would be a huge help ... Ive been so focused on finishing my freefall skills that my canopy skills havent been practiced ... Thanks for the advice ... and yes, i know i need to discuss everything with my coaches and instructors for complete clarification. Thanks!!!
  15. Yeah ... i was just told to look straight ahead. Obviously, its hard not to want to look down when on final. 45 degrees sounds reasonable ... if i can get up this weekend, i'll try that. A friend also discussed really making sure i flare completely. I'm flying a big-ass canopy (student rig) so maybe i'm just not flaring all the way ... so many things to try and i want/need to do it in 3 more jumps to make it within my 25!
  16. To reply to both of the last posts ... yes, i am flying the same student rig and canopy. Thank you for the advice in flaring. I'm gonna keep trying. This is probably the best and kindest advice i've heard. I'm close to finishing up ... 22 jumps and finished my freefall skills. I still have canopy work to do, obviously. Thanks again
  17. Im going through AFF currently and am having a tough time completely judging my height off the ground ... i havent found the sweet spot just yet. I either flare too early or a bit too late and can't stand up my landing ... I have started working on the 2-stage flare but am stil having issues. I am looking forward vs. looking down. Does anyone have any suggestions to make this easier? I have been told its going to take some time .. but damnit, i need to stand up the landing to get my A license. Any advice would be awesome
  18. Very new to the sport ... on Cat D in AFF and i went down to Paraclete XP over the weekend ... did 1 hour spead out from 12-7pm. Its Tuesday, I flew Saturday and am still sore in my shoulders. It takes a lot of getting used to ...
  19. Exactly what one of my instructors said ... the more i think about it, the more i just want to rent. As much as i'm bruised already from the student/rental gear, i know its decent and does what i want/need it to do.. Still too new at this to truly know anything... 7 jumps into my AFF and still loving every second of it.
  20. I appreciate the comments ... Yeah, ive been asking a lot of questions and the more I think about it, the more I want to be renting a rig at my DZ for a while... I think thats the best way to figure out what size i want ... So many people make comments about my height and weight and not knowing exactly what my WL is ... Thanks...
  21. I appreciate the info ... a-hole remarks or not.
  22. Thanks. I have spoken to them. By the time I get ready to get my license, I want to think about getting my own rig. Was just hoping for some advice from those who are much more experienced than I am ...
  23. I'm very new to the sport .. just 3 jumps and in the AFF course. I'm interested in purchasing a rig but am confused on what I should be looking for. I don't think I want to purchase anything high performance right now. I'm 5'5" 200lb. Any thoughts from anyone out there? Thanks!
