Teachers drop the Holocaust to avoid offending Muslims
miked10270 replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
I think it's cool... It's like being famous enough to have a stalker! Perhaps the nut of this is in the close of the article: Teachers have a poor grasp of the subjects and this results in simplified & superficial lessons (along with an inability to adequately debate any counter-arguments). I saw this first-hand when discussing my 12 year-old's school history syllabus; Germany, 1919-45 (as part of 20th century European history) when I mentioned "Keynes' beliefs on The German Reparations Problem" to blank looks and panic! I think the history department was expecting to cover Nazism & German Communism with; "Along came a bad man". Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. That would be one concern. the other of course is the blackmail potential of tinpots who now have an ace up their sleeve. One of the things about Nukes is that as nations get them, they make DAMN SURE that "fanatics" don't get near them. Those which DO get the responsibility of control of them tend to quickly lose their fanaticism in the face of the characteristics of the weapons. As I said earlier, we've had some pretty "Fanatical" folk in charge of Nukes since their development, and in each case it has caused a change in the degree of actual fanaticism (as opposed to rhetoric). Is there any "Blackmail" potential with Nukes. They are AN INTRINSICALLY DEFENSIVE WEAPON! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. We know that the sailors weren't in Iranian Waters because "Honest" Tony Blair says so! We all know he's incapable of lying, so that's certainly good enough for me! I understood that they boarded an Indian ship to search it. One wonders if it drifted during the search? Spies!!? I doubt it. Had they been SBS then the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (Pedalo-Division) would have woken up wondering what day it was. Further, "Spies" don't get filmed by TV crews on their own ship (which several of them were). Now... As to why the sailors are being held, I think it is (as Skyrad says) part of a faction-fight in Iran. Bear in mind, the Iranian Government doesn't have "Checks-&-Balances" so much as opposing quasi autonomous forces taking their authority from the widely divergent branches of government. That is very likely the real bar to these sailors' release and the incoherent Iranian response. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. How soon we forget. Stalin, Malenkov & Beria were were utterly ruthless megalomaniacs! Extremists who hated the US! Yet... Mao-Zedong had no compunction about killing millions of his people in Korea and during the "Great Leap Forward" and "Cultural Revolution". Yet... India & Pakistan had been fighting a quasi religious war since partition in 1947. Yet... South Africa under De-Klerk & Botha enjoyed a nuclear monopoly in the region while their very way of life was threatened. Yet... In EVERY case, the acquisition of nuclear weapons , and consideration of how they can be used, has FORCED the new owners to raise their game... And has demonstrated over and over the fundamentally defensive nature & utility of such weapons. It is impossible to use them offensively without losing the very thing you are trying to gain or protect. Hence, they are kept against the time the owner has nothing to lose, and then MAY be used... Or may not be. The thought that the "other side" MAY use them keeps war an instrument of diplomacy rather than an easy solution to a problem. For the last 17 years, America has held an effective nuclear monopoly. Now, it's kind of like 1949 all over again, with America (the political leadership) having to come to terms with the loss of that monopoly over a potential enemy. We hope that America's leadership will demonstrate the same intelligence and sense that the Truman & Eisenhower administrations did. Mike. BUT... He was originally trained on public roads, and is expected to maintain his skills for high-speed driving on public roads. This is different from race-track driving. In the meantime, higher courts have overturned BOTH the verdicts available to the Magistrates... So God only knows where this'll go now! As for "One law for Us... A different law for you'se"... 'Twas ever thus! Mike. Edited to explain: "Life on Mars" is a BBC TV series where a modern-day cop (DI Sam Tyler) finds himself back in 1973; Cue the culture-clash with his boss, DCI Gene Hunt. Camberwick Green was a 1970's kids TV show. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. So, so far the Magistrates Court has ACQUITTED him, and were told to reconsider. Then they found him guilty, and have been told to reconsider. There's already legislation that allows emergency services immunity from prosecution for certain parts of the traffic laws (among them are speeding & obeying certain "compulsory" traffic signs). As such, he could only be convicted of Dangerous or Careless Driving. But... Was he driving dangerously (forget ANY chance of a Careless Driving conviction) given that he has been trained at great expense to drive safely at such speeds? I think not. Mike. Should our criminal in chief be impeached?
miked10270 replied to Lucky...'s topic in Speakers Corner
Exactly. Being a self-centered incompetent is not in itself an impeachable offence. If it were, then personal survival rather than impeaching the President would the first thing on the mind of the average American politician! Mike. Police protest TV show targeting predators
miked10270 replied to Richards's topic in Speakers Corner
"Entrapment is complex because the exact limits differ from locality to locality. As such, it's a legal minefield for experienced cops. For an inexperienced TV company staff with different motives it gets dangerous. In effect, the cop (or TV Company) has to show that they did NOTHING to persuade the accused to do something he MIGHT NOT have otherwise done anyway. They can't have encouraged or helped the accused to commit the crime. All they could do is sit and watch while the accused makes ALL the running and all the decisions. Now... The TV Company isn't doing this stuff to help society. They're doing it to sell advertising by showing stuff people will watch. It's more important for it to be interesting than socially responsible. Can you REALLY trust them to stay absolutely inside the local entrapment guidelines and previous cases?.. Or might some ambitious TV staffer "stretch" things, just a little bit? Then... When is it shown? It has to be after the individuals trial. But what if it's a series? Does the fact that jurors could have seen earlier episodes of such a show prejudice them? What if the accused is acquitted? Can the sting then be shown? Wouldn't that be trial by media and public inflammation? What if a "righteous" TV staffer posted footage out on the 'net? This is one of those great ideas where a hell of a lot can go wrong. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Personally I just don't like eating hair... In that case, I suggest you refrain from biting, chewing and swallowing your prospective partner's armpits! Further, I would think that biting ANY of your partners "hairy bits" (whether actually hairy or shaved) would tend to spoil the mood a little! That's why the thingy shows a tongue, not teeth! Mike. Police protest TV show targeting predators
miked10270 replied to Richards's topic in Speakers Corner
. I was curious my self as to why the cops didn't want to cooperate. It seems that it would gift wrap them a perv. It depends. The problem with letting a TV Company into this stuff is that the TV Company wants good TV, while the cops want a watertight case WITHOUT the guy getting off by some lawyer claiming entrapment or prejudice to his clients rights. I wonder if W-FIVE has past experience doing this sort of case?.. Or are they just jumping onto a ratings bandwagon? How would this interact with local & state laws where it's being done and shown? Can the TV company be trusted not to fuck up a prosecution or not stir something up just to get the TV they want!!? Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. What's the fuss about hairy armpits!!? I tend to decide whether I want to have sex with someone according to more pertinent bits of anatomy than armpits. Of course, if Y'All prefer your women to disguise signs of maturity and appear to be pre-pubescent... Who was the film critic who explained the reason for Shirley Temple's popularity in America? That's right! It was actually aimed at a PentaCLE! It was supposed to be anti-Zionist, but the perpetrators couldn't count the points on the star. That's why Dubbie declared a "War-On-Error"... To raise inbred Texans standards of education (including his own)... But that damned typo got in the way. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. And it's a KILLER!!! Not only has it been closely linked to the causes of Sub-Saharan Drought, but total immersion is likely to cause death! Even partial immersion can cause death or serious injury when it's combined with Carcharodon carcharias. Yet... It's government approved simply because it's a cheap cleaning agent when combined with surfactants. Awful. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. It all comes down to breeding old boy. Breeding! Really, the basic difference is that while Dubbie is doing a job on a temporary contract, both William & Harry have been born into a job. What they would do was decided at the moment of birth. In effect, they were bound by the traditions of the Royal Family - one of which is public service in youth prior to rule in later life. It's "Those who would command must first learn to obey" writ large. For female youths, this means charity work. No choice. For male youths, this means military service. It's where a significant degree of their credibility comes from. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. BBC reports that Pessimism 'growing among Iraqis'
miked10270 replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
PLEASE... Don't accuse ME of sugar-coating things! Leave that to The Times. "One in four Iraqis has had a family member murdered, says the poll by Opinion Research Business. In Baghdad, the capital, one in four has had a relative kidnapped and one in three said members of their family had fled abroad." If they polled a "representative-sample" of Iraqis, how did they poll the dead, kidnapped and emigrant, of which there now seems to be rather a lot! But... Property is now a lot cheaper thanks to the reduced demand for it! I can see a long-term-holiday-home-investment-opportunity for the median Times reader. Mike. Yeah... In the study... One in 4 iraqis have had a family member killed. One in 3 Iraqis have a family member who's left the country. I think Darius has answered this, but, if I may contribute a political saying by Henry kissinger (referring I think to Viet Minh atrocities to gain control of villages and Soviet - Cuban backed civil unrest in Latin America): "Fishing is best done in Troubled Waters" In effect, a "comfortable" population WON'T embrace a radical political solution. As such, in order to get Iraq to accept radical Islam after it's many years of secularism, it's necessary for the people to be uncomfortable and suffering... If they aren't so, then it's in the interests of the radical to make them so. Hence the attempt to disrupt the rule of law and normal life to the extent that the protagonists solution will be accepted, even welcomed if it stops the unrest. Mike.
