I'm rapidly approaching the point where I can assume that anyone using "woke" as a pejorative is not a serious person at all and can be safely ignored. It's so embarrassingly lazy.
-
Tiny nitpick, but yes it is. The initial ruling in that case was overturned shortly afterwards. Otherwise in full agreeance!

This phrasing is what has me curious. Is it a case of the teacher taking things there, or is it open discussion between the teacher and the students? Because I could easily see the latter being led in those directions by the students themselves....

Mate I just went and checked my profile, and it turns out yesterday marked my 10th year on here. You haven't engaged in a single topic in good faith for at least half of that time. People respond to you in accordance with your actions.

Worth also inviting him to source the events in these videos as well. Most of them didn't die, and most of them occurred either pre-Covid or at least pre-vaccine. It's an active disinformation campaign. EDIT: And I don't mean that as a "challenge" him type thing, I mean it as an actual investigative exercise. If he can see for himself that the people pushing these narratives are actively fluffing it with fake data, the better the odds that he'll be more sceptical in future off his own back.

Why do you hate hard-working gymnastics coaches and ballet teachers?

Powerful speech by Biden on the assault on Democracy
mistercwood replied to JoeWeber's topic in Speakers Corner
Except they didn't need to. They never should have needed to. Everything you just saw, is exactly as described in the original statements. I don't think you went down the rabbit hole on this one, but your "just asking questions" doubts give fuel to those who did. -
Worth adding to the discussion - Biden has maintained a security clearance the entire time the documents were in possession. Trump cannot claim the same.

Sexual orientation being "shoved down our throats"
mistercwood replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
This is not accurate, puberty-blockers alone have no effect on fertility. Only if you continue on to HRT with testosterone or oestrogen would you face the risk of impacting egg or sperm production, respectively. It may seem like a semantic distinction, but the blockers and the later hormone treatments are two very different things, with different impacts. That said, yes the fertility concerns around transitioning are valid and clearly laid out for those who go through this process. -
Sexual orientation being "shoved down our throats"

Same energy: -
I agree, but that's also never been done by anyone. He has embellished the story to conflate the events and try to justify what is ultimately just a knee-jerk reaction on his part. To be clear, it is his platform now and he can do all of this, he can do literally anything he wants with it - roll a dice and ban all accounts starting with the letter F, or whatever. What people are reacting to is the balls-out hypocrisy he's displaying. The majority of his stated intent for the purchase was to have a free-speech haven, yet he has gone back on that over and over again since arriving. Hell, he point blank said he would never ban the ElonsJet account barely a month ago - nothing has changed about the account, but he just decided on a whim that this was now a problem. He also banned the personal accounts of the kid who runs it and is threatening to sue him - he's 20.

Interestingly, the answer is "maybe?". The updated TOS prohibits sharing of someone's live location on the same day... so if you post a selfie saying "Holy crap, Joe Biden's having breakfast in my local cafe right now!", you're in violation. If you posted it a day later, you're in the clear. BUT, there is also a carve-out in the TOS that covers if something is in the public interest or part of a broader discussion.... what this is most likely to mean in practice is that the rules will be applied arbitrarily, as has become Musk's MO since arriving. I can guarantee that the carve-out will be used to allow accounts like LibsOfTikTok to continue to do stochastic terrorism, while the bans will be applied to anyone that hurts Musk's fee-fees.

Sexual orientation being "shoved down our throats"
mistercwood replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
Just for clarity, is it mastectomies that you're concerned about (basically the only surgery ever done to minors other than the scenarios Bill mentioned), or hormone treatment overall? If the former, these are actually far more rare than certain media wants to make out.... last figures I saw had it in the region of a little less than 300 cases annually in the US, so a bit less than one a day nationally, in a population of over a 1/3 of a billion people. Cosmetically at least, these are also reversable - the one permanent change is that the patient would not be able to breast feed later in life if they were to detransition. I will point out though that detransitioning figures are also much, much lower than certain media wants to make out. The most recent studies on the matter found a rate of 1-2% across all youths in the study (including all transitioning, social or physical), and most of those were due to family pressure, not a feeling of having made the wrong decision. For comparison, the regret rate for all kinds of elective surgeries overall is in the region of 7%. Lastly, I do want to point out that getting kids into ballet or gymnastics happens at young ages all over the world, for orders of magnitude more children, and also makes permanent, irreversible changes to those kids bodies. We do not hear the same uproar about these changes, which are ostensibly made for the purposes of a hobby, not someone's being. I get your concerns about potential misdiagnosis, and agree these kids should be getting the best care and the right outcomes. It's just that of the groups shouting the loudest about caring for the kids, some do mean it, but a whole lot really just don't want trans people to exist and see this as the easiest way to "nip things in the bud". -
I'm 100% for it, but as others have mentioned, with enough checks to ensure it's the best option for the person choosing it, without so much getting in the way that it's not *really* an available option. If I get something like an Alzheimer's diagnosis, I'm not sticking around to the end. That's not fair on my wife and friends, and the transitionary phase - while I'm still aware enough to know that I'm losing my mind - is a nightmare to me.

My wife says birthdays and anniversaries only, she's mean like that.

You're both being incredibly boring...

lol, and - I cannot stress this enough - lmao.

Why are you posting an article from March, when it's no longer remotely reflective of the events on the ground?
-
And why would anyone believe them? They already have a recent and documented history of agreeing to terms, Ukraine doing their side of the deal, then Russia reneging when it suits them and just invading again. You keep talking like Russia are being reasonable, when we already have proof that they're not, their words are meaningless. Ukraine are SEEKING PEACE as you so dearly hope for. They are doing so by making this war so costly for Russia that they will eventually give up. So far, they're doing a damned good job.

Legal strategy for Colorado Springs shooter
mistercwood replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
I can't (though I grudgingly get where you're coming from). Weaponising gender identity as a defense vector for someone who killed people explicitly for their gender identity/sexuality is obscene. -
The point is that many "100% RIGHT ON" convictions have later been shown to be wrong. The judicial system will never be perfect, so if you keep capital punishment you are guaranteeing the continuation of state-sponsored murder of innocents. I can never support that. If you *must* keep it as a punishment, then it should be as humane as possible. A nitrogen chamber meets this requirement easily and cheaply. Choosing the remaining methods that have been shown to often be excruciating means you want revenge, not justice.
-
Possibly, but maybe not for the reasons you think. The word "Woke" has been turned so toxic by elements of the right that it is pretty much used exclusively as a perjorative now, so it's almost impossible to use it the way you have defined here (as it originated) and be understood correctly. As in, I was genuinely disappointed in you having used it, because I reflexively took it as the perjorative. I am *glad* that I was wrong about your intent, but I honestly could not tell you the last time I saw a conservative use it correctly and without an implied sneer.

Oh wow, I hadn't been checking on this one and didn't realise it had tightened up that much. That's well within the recount threshold now, Bobble-head needs a lead of more than ~820 votes at the moment to avoid it, which she's slipped under by a lot. She had an 1100+ lead for a good while there.
