Halfway through my AFF I remember sitting in the caravan on the ride up looking at the blank stares on experienced sykdivers faces and thought to myself they just looked like addicts waiting for their fix. I wondered to myself, "Why the fuck am I doing this? Why are they doing this?" But as soon as I'm out that door I understand why :). I guess it varies from person to person but I still had elevated heart rate and heavy breathing at the 1 min light up until about jump 10-15 and wondered if it'd ever go away - it does, well turns into excitement rather than anxiety. I dunno about other people but getting my own rig and packing myself made a massive difference, less unknowns (what ifs) going through your mind. Anway, I'm still noob and it's fresh in my mind, try stick with it if it's something you know you want to do. I don't think there's many people (sane people) who weren't anxious for the first 5,10,20 jumps.

Regardless of whether tandems are more dangerous or not, would you really want to spend $200ish dollars per jump to be a sack of potatoes? Go do the first jump course and go from there :) If you think the risk is too high then you can always walk away.

What is the business case for fun jumpers?
Trev_S replied to 3mpire's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Everyone says to make a million in skydiving start with two million...that's not really true, BUT to get RICH in skydiving - you invariably will end up fucking somebody over. Don't be that guy. Without fun jumpers you have no AD campaign....because you have no sport. The reason people want to do a tandem is because they then are a 'skydiver' to all the wuffos back at the office. "Yeah I can skydive just like those guys on the 400way in the news" You take away the fun jumpers you have a 'real' carnival ride...tandem ride would get stale. Do you know WHY theme parks spends millions a year on a NEW ride? Nobody wants to do the 20 year old roller coaster...even IF they've never done it before. Now IF what you're talking about is a small tandem only operation...you can no doubt have a workable business plan and make a profit. But then...you're in effect leaching off the operations that DO promote fun jumping to keep interest in the sport etc. It's being done at certain places and appears to be profitable...IF that's where you're sole interest lies in the sport - filling your pockets. Then IMHO you are no better than Slydied or any of the other cheesedick fukwads the ME gereration has seemed to produce. You CAN be a successful businessman AND a skydiver...there are plenty of drop zones proving that. OR you can be a cheesedikfukwadbusinessman & and make the occasional solo fun jump (with all your friends LOL) at your 'tandem factory' when you're not haulin' meat ... wondering why real skydivers won't return your calls. Keeping fun jumpers away from your operation is like having a bar that won't let women in the door because they don't buy as many drinks as men...short sighted and stupid. best post on the internet. -
pretty sure he's the dude posting the video.... you far left wing liberals give us normal lefties a bad name - stop trying so hard to be offended! lol

training with a new chute/ other newb questions
Trev_S replied to chemist's topic in Gear and Rigging
Spend money on coaching, it's far more valuable. You will probably only put 5 jumps on the first rig you jump in AFF. I went 260 4 jumps --> 250 4 jumps --> 230 20 jumps --> now I'm on a 210 @ 30 jumps and will be on a 190 for a couple of hundred jumps soon. You will learn, as I recently have, that the scariest part of skydiving is the $$ it costs to learn. Save your money! -
There was a study done on time perception recently that I was reading the other day. I'm not qualified to explain it but the short story was time perception is related to working memory or temporal memory or something, i dunno. Basically when you recall a stressful event the memory created actually gives the illusion of time being longer than it actually was. Time doesn't seem slower in the moment, only when you recall the event/experience does it seem longer. Anyway, my first few jumps seemed like a couple of minutes but now it feels too fking short! and im still a noob...

"seller" does not want to refund my money

I was advised never to buy without having a rigger check it first. May cost you some shipping but it's better than buying garbage. Try going through chuting star, they have a service for this. -
When Waking Up, Should I...
Trev_S replied to FlyingRhenquest's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was just about to ask when you would be waking up in freefall.. this makes more sense than the seriously bad case of sleepwalking I had in my head lol. -
Skydive Radio #184 with Dave Star is now available. Enjoy.
Trev_S replied to diverds's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
pretty simple solution... Don't listen to it around the kids? Do you complain to Quentin Tarantino when you watch one of his films? -

Love the show. Particularly the "you might be a newbie if.." segment. I'm learning what not to do - I have now removed "first" from my vocabulary ;). -
I did my AFF there, now doing B rels. Love it.

If the DZO has a problem with it can't they just not sell tickets to them?

Trev_S replied to shorehambeach's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Social skills go along way towards making and keeping friends. Please note that SIM/BPA is not semantics. Pfft, I thought it was hilarious - I'm stealing it. -

In Aus we're taught 2000ft is decision time. -
Did you get one already?
-
HAHA! I just started skydiving a few months ago and I find I now ride more safely for fear of crashing and not being able to jump!
-
Solution = all exit at same time. flat, verts, AFF, tandems. Throw in CRW and wingsuiters just for fun. Might only get to do it once but it'd make for an awesome photo :)

Skydive Jump Statistics North America

Just tell your mom that you are going swimming... Where's the fun in that? I like texting her b4 a jump, "Doing a hop n pop in a few minutes, Mum. I'm not very experienced so I hope nothing goes wrong.... If I don't make it, just give my shit to Brendan (my brother)" Mums love it when you stay in touch.. -
haha, there's no way I'd ride without it in a bag lol. Deploying on the highway would not be fun. highway = freeway for you yanks ;)
-
Yeh, I'll give the gear bag a go first and get the top box if it sucks riding with it on my back for an hr eachway. Probably a good idea to have it in a gear bag in addition to the box anyway.
-
Great news! Gear bag it is. More money to spend on coaching :) Thanks guys.

Hey guys, Anyone here transport their rig on their bike? Any suggestions on the best way to do this? I'm lookin at buying a rig very soon but will need a way to transport it to and from the DZ. I don't own a car, only a bike. If I were to buy a luggage box such as this: http://shop.sydneycitymotorcycles.com.au/p/576201/givi-e52n-monokey-topbox-black.html would there be any issues if I were to strap the rig in securely? Thanks in advance

I just jumped the identical configuration. I couldn't hear it in freefall, only under canopy. Maybe my hearing's just shit. Can you hear yours easily or is it fairly faint?
