  1. You do realize you're quoting the Daily Mail, right? It's a British tabloid that's worse than the National Enquirer. According to the school district the kid was never suspended or kicked off the football team. He hasn't been on the team for a year. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  2. Parachutes don't generate lift? Then what are they there for? I think that barrel roll might be the correct term considering that the skydiver, lines, and canopy are all experiencing a positive G-loading during the roll, imagine what it would look like if they weren't. I think a more accurate definition is that the axis of rotation has to above the center-of-gravity which in the videos is the case. Again, why don't you think that a parachute generates lift? A normal barrel roll in an airplane is done at little more than 1G, it's one of the least stressful aerobatic maneuvers that an airplane can do. Another term for a barrel-roll is 'displacement roll' in that the aircraft is displaced from it's flight path during the roll. Clearly, the flight path of the center-of-gravity of the parachute system (the parachutist) is clearly displaced around the flight path at a positive G loading. I submit that the maneuvers in the videos are in fact barrel rolls.
  3. Just found this on youtube: A powered parachute cluelessly circling over the LZ at low altitude. A couple skydivers share their opinion from the ground. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tiv9nbBlwfM
  4. The discussion was about how to join AOPA by getting a student pilot certificate. It had nothing to do with medicals. My point still stands, if someone wanted to get a student pilot certificate all they would need to do is go down to the FSDO and ask for one, they'll issue it on the spot. 5. From 8900.2 (which is the handbook for Designated Examiners) What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  6. You're right, there's a form to fill out. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  7. I you don't have a current 3rd. class medical your Student Pilot Certificate is not valid. Sparky If you're over 14 years of age, you can get an SPC and act as PIC (Solo) of a glider or balloon without a medical certificate. And, if you're over 16 y/o, you can fly a sport plane with a driver's license in lieu of a medical certificate. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  8. You can get a Student Pilot Certificate by going to the FSDO, or an examiner, and asking for one. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  9. Didn't see a previous thread for this, it's from a year ago, but I hadn't seen it until yesterday. Helicopter Fishing What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  10. I'll bet in hindsight, this guy probably wished he had a parachute during this takeoff. Inadvertent Low-Altitude Bailout What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?

  12. Lowering the nose would have been the worst thing they could do, it only makes the aircraft descend faster. Flying lesson number one: Give up airspeed for altitude or give up altitude for airspeed. These pilots had to conserve altitude to clear the wall which meant giving up all the airspeed that they could until they had more engine power. They did everything much too late, but dropping the nose would have just killed scores more people. They were already too low to clear the wall, there's no way to make a 777 do a Fosbury Flop to jump up to the runway. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  13. If you'd like to see what the exact same crash in an Airbus looks like then check out the Air France Flight 296 crash. AF296 Exact same crash. Too low, too slow, too late to power up, neither aircraft stalled, one aircraft flew into a forest, the other flew into a seawall. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  14. I'm wondering whether most of the fire damage is from the emergency oxygen generators. An interviewed passenger stated that the oxygen masks popped out during the crash and he started to breathe from it. If any passengers pulled on their oxygen masks it would activate the oxygen generators which burn fairly hot and the oxygen might have helped any initial fires spread. 18. Whoa! Does this mean you agree with me now? I'm know for a fact that you're not the first person to offer up the concept of a camera endorsement on this board. The problem is that the C-License recommendation (it's not a 200 jump requirement) doesn't actually address any camera training, while being overly burdensome and restrictive for personal camera use. Perhaps DSE efforts on a wingsuit instructor rating would be better spent creating a camera endorsement syllabus. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  19. An instructor's endorsement: Part 61.31 What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  20. That's ridiculous! Many pilots actually learn to fly in complex and high performance aircraft, including multi-engine aircraft. In fact, lets compare two 100 hour private pilots, one did all their flying in a 172 and the other's only flown a Seneca, who do you think is the more qualified pilot? It's really no contest! But let's just make up stupid exclusionary rules instead. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  21. But it's not a big deal as long as it's not on video, right? And how many videos are there on YouTube of students videoing their training and their solo flights? Are they being unreasonably distracted by the camera(s)? Instructors intend to teach as much as possible as the student progresses. It is expected that students will learn to use the radio from the beginning of flight training, and most pilots agree that using the radio is usually the most difficult and intimidating thing to learn during pre-solo training. There is no student solo sign-off for radio use. Solo sign-offs are airport specific - the student has to have received training to fly at each airport. Each individual solo x-country flight also has to have a specific sign-off. Also operation inside Class B airspace requires a specific sign-off. This applies to all student pilots, even student sport pilots. Not sure of the point you were trying to make with Sport Pilots. If a Sport Pilot chose not to earn Class B, C, or D privileges then so be it. Again, the "anti-camera" argument asks me to look at a video to see why a camera shouldn't be used. How do you not see the hypocrisy? What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  22. You seriously missed the point of my analogy. Flight Data Recorders don't make your airline flight safer, either. It's only upon review that the lessons are learned. It's amazing that the anti-camera people argue that there's no value in a POV shot of a skydive, but point to every POV shot of a skydiving mistake to argue against cameras. Wow, just take the camera out of the equation and no one makes mistakes anymore, brilliant! It's an asinine argument! [Quote]Can we get an idea of your skydiving experience so we know if you have actual merit to your opinions that cameras are harmless, or are you just another Joey? Here we go with the personal attacks! What's the problem, can't have a rational debate based on the argument? What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  23. Not the same thing, wearing a camera is not a maneuver. What you're espousing is not letting student pilots talk on the radio until they have 200 hours of flight time, because talking on the radio would be a distraction. They should just stay away from airspace that requires two-way radio contact until they have the experience to control the airplane before they do something stupid like try to talk and fly at the same time. After all, talking on a cellphone while driving is illegal, isn't it? The anti-camera argument is an irrational, arbitrary argument without any real foundation. Bill's statement above, "I have yet to meet someone with 50 jumps who can safely handle a camera. Perhaps one may exist," is outrageously biased, and just proves the point. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  24. No, I have a problem with the abstinence-based model of skydiving training: "We'll just tell them it's wrong, and then not provide any education at all, that way they won't do it, because the good book says it's a sin!" I guess the SIM is just another book that gets misquoted. What if the Bible had been written by Stephen King?
  25. So I take it you're against having first-timers knowingly signing their rights away then, since they clearly aren't capable of understanding the risks? This is what's backwards in the sport: "Sign a waiver so that you accept all responsibility for anything that could go wrong on the jump, but in reality, sign a waiver so that I can micromanage everything you do without having to worry about having any personal or professional liability for what happens to you." Jumper signs waiver to jump out of an airplane and accepts said risks, unless of course, the local "Mean Girls" determine that you're not cool enough to be in their clique.
