Depends on the DZ. Skydivers are like family, but it's also a business, and you can make a statement by switching DZs. Of course, there's nothing that can be done about bad weather, and I think DZs in cold areas understand that. I've never seen other skydivers or even instructors that would think of you as a traitor, but I have seen DZOs that would. If I was a DZO and a student went elsewhere, I would try to improve service so that didn't happen. OTOH, there are some DZOs out there that have huge egos and treat everyone like shit and don't understand why they can't keep jumpers. You need to do what's best for you, and other skydivers won't begrudge you for that. They'll most likely be jealous of you for staying warm! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

There are quite a few companies that still use not only telnet, but green-screens and mainframes. I usually get a call once every few months from someone that wants to integrate a 15 year old AS400 app with some new internet tool. I try to convince them that it would be cheaper to upgrade, but some people seriously can't fathom change. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Quite probable in my opinion. Not dropped - walked in or driven in - small package nuke. The business district of most cities is usually pretty small - Denver in about 1 square mile, for instance - one small nuke could do a lot of damage if placed correctly. Oklahoma City bombing is a good model for such a terrorist act - imagine if it was a nuke. The good thing is that they are hard to make. The bad thing is that they are easy to lose. Also, with state sponsored terrorism, some countries can afford dedicate the money and resources to build one - if you have the time, money and access to natural uranium, you can easily build a cyclotron to generate enough U-235 to make a critical mass device like the Hiroshima bomb. Given Pax Americana, a city in the US will be the most likely target. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Goggles. When I drive by the local high school and offer to give girls rides home, the conversation goes like this: G: What's that hanging from your mirror? Me: Goggles. G: For skiing? Me: No - skydiving. G: ooohhh. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Watch out for those corks! I nearly got killed by one last night. No kidding - left a dent in my ceiling. Scared the crap out of my GF. Then my neighbor's dogs (whom I'm babysitting this week) decided to chew up the cork in bed last night and left crumbs everywhere. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Yes. Bad. Drunken things said in a bar are quickly forgotten. Drunken posts live forever in the post log. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Watch out! Happened to me several times on my last job. After about the sixth time, the boss that kept changing my projects gave me a bad review for being too slow and not finishing my jobs. I told him if he would stop giving me 8-12 week projects and canceling them after the first week, I might stand a chance of finishing one. I also gave him my letter of resignation 20 minutes after that discussion. I work for myself now. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Friend of mine lost *both* her front teeth giving her boyfriend (now husband) a BJ. No joke. Bad teeth run in her family. Let's all be careful out there. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

This is a good point Clay - most jumps that sport jumpers make would be considered HALO by military standards (I believe). I think there are some qualifications, like must have 5 seconds of freefall at least and be over 5,000 feet AGL to start, or something like that. Good trivia when you're at the bar talking to your friendly neighborhood Army Ranger. I couldn't find a good definition of HALO on the net - anyone know what the qualifications are? I still get carded for everything at 32. I bleached my hair, and I now get carded for spray-paint (I think you have to be 16 to buy it). Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story2&cid=573&ncid=757&e=1&u=/nm/20021206/od_nm/odd_beer_dc BANDERA, Texas (Reuters) - A jury on Thursday handed a life prison sentence to a Texas man who shot and killed a longtime friend he accused of drinking the last beer in his refrigerator. Jurors deliberated for less than two hours before passing the sentence on Steven Brasher, 42, for the murder of Willie Lawson, 39, on Nov. 5 last year. "There was only two beers left, so I took one, and I told Willie not to take my last beer," Brasher said in a taped statement that was played during the trial. Testimony showed Brasher shot Lawson in the head with a pistol after the two began arguing over the missing beer. Brasher maintained the shooting was an accident. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. Speaking of bad movies - anyone see the new James Bond movie? Don't keep reading if you don't want me to spoil the "unpredictable" plot. I still can't stop laughing about how they had to descend to 5,000 feet in the jet because it was breaking up and got depressurized, violently sucking out most of the bad guys. Must have been 20 minutes from 5,000 feet, descending the whole time and they still had time to back out a helicopter on a conveyor belt and auto-gyrate it to a start before it hit the ground. I remember when I was a student and pulled at 5,000 feet - I think I had only 5 minutes or so under canopy. The brief skydiving scenes were bad too. What ever happened to great skydiving movies, like Cutaway? Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Society is to blame for this shit. We spent years training people how to use Flash to make web sites during the dot-com boom, then we laid them all off. Now we have out of work rogue flash designers spending all their unemployment checks on illegal drugs and making nonsensical flash web sites. It's time we stand up and take responsibility. Oh - I should have read more thoroughly. I would still wager that crime is higher in non "leading economy" worlds. Crime and poverty tend to go hand-in-hand. Let's see - I spent a few months in England/Scotland - London, Cambridge, York, Edinburgh. London and Edinburgh were definitely the shadiest places, but overall it seemed to me to be less dangerous than the states. Probably the highest crime area I saw there was the airport - UK airports have one of the highest rates of pick-pocketing. That could be what pushed the UK over the top in this report Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

This is among leading economies - I don't know how they judge a leading economy, but my guess would be south africa has a higher crime rate - particularly the johannesburg area. I will say that I felt safer in England than the US. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
