How often do you pack yourself?
riddler replied to Antidote's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I always pack myself. I had some packers pack for me at the freefall convention a few years ago, and I got slammed on many openings. Now I really don't trust anyone else to do it. I'm constantly developing an understanding and even a harmony with my canopy - knowing that if I do this little thing when I pack, it makes a big difference on how soft the opening is, where if I do this other little thing, it makes a big difference on the direction of opening, if I do this third thing, I can get it to open faster or slower, et al. Asking someone else to pack for me is like asking someone else to dance with my girlfriend - I may not always LIKE to do it, but I feel like I can do it better than anyone else, because I've done it more than anyone else. It's not about money either - if I could clone myself I would pay me $5 to pack every time. Heck, I would probably pay $10. It's really about the intimacy with the equipment, the necessity of me doing the job right, and having only one person to blame if something goes wrong. I'm sure at some point in the future, I'll feel too rushed or tired to pack for myself, and have others pack for me. But for the time being, I'm happy to do it myself. According to the (begin trumpet fanfare) USPA 2005 SIM (end trumpet fanfare), yes, this is a no-no. Section 5.1.F.Power Lines.4.g: Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

I don't know how I knew before I started but I did. My brother and I jumped off the roof a lot when I was a kid. I got the idea to try it holding a lawn bag, but we just couldn't hold onto it I remember being asked what I want for my 18th birthday, and I said I want to go skydiving. My step-mom looked into it, decided it was too expensive, and made me a cake that had a skydiver on it instead. Now that I look back, she was probably more scared than worried about the cost But the day I walked into Mile Hi, I knew I would be a skydiver, and I was lucky to have a great tandem instructor (Pintamo) who only added to my enthusiasm. Who knows, maybe I spent my whole life convincing myself that I would love it, and so when I finally made the first jump, I did love it? Psst - Mary - when you're ready to spend the other half of that income that you don't have on scuba diving, call me. I can get you a discount if you take one of my classes Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

After the site changed about a year ago, it became harder to do some of the things I used to do routinely. For user search, I now usually do it like this: Click Forums Click Who's Online Click View Member Directory Towards the top of that page, there's a text box called "Search for a user" Incidentally, I saw this post because I searched for you (an old habit ), and selected "Show User's posts". Just the graphic alone is cool - Google is my homepage, so I spotted it early this morning. Leo was a true genius! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

What's the most you have ever spent on sunglasses?
riddler replied to Skolls081102's topic in The Bonfire
Oakleys are awesome! I spent about $185 on an m-frame, and had them for about two years before I left them at a restaurant, and they were snagged by the wait staff. They have some of the best sunlight protection, they look great and they are high quality. They are a good investment, as long as you don't leave them at the resteraunt Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD -
Definitely! It's worth the money. Front-row seats to O are worth the money, and I probably wouldn't say that about any other show. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

You at least get to enjoy the summer with us. Come to some boogies, do some jumping. Then if you have to go back, you can put together a boogie or two there in Canada and we'll all go (as long as it's in the summer!). Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

So a few years ago, I had an idea about creating a cell phone for kids. It would only have buttons to call parents, so the kids wouldn't spend minutes calling friends during math class, and a 911 button for emergencies. Well, someone finally invented it: Firefly mobile phone for kids They've made it so the parents can create a phone book with up to 20 necessary numbers, and lock the phone book with a PIN, so those are the only numbers the kids can dial. It's currently only available in a few locations, but they plan to open it up and sell on-line in May, and then sell them at Target starting June. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Ya know, when Jim Henson was still alive, he didn't let bureaucrats and social services tell him how to make movies/television. It's sad that parents want to blame television for it's effects on kids. Parents have the ability to turn off the television and be a direct influence on their children's eating habits. Oh, wait - we're talking about the same parents that come home, flop on the couch and drink beer and eat ice cream while watching sports and reality shows Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

A japanese philosopher once said that when there is a fire, most people run away, but there are a few souls that run toward the flames. Those of us that know hook know that he's one of those souls. And I'm sure he's too modest to even read this thread, so Kelly is probably telling him what everyone is saying right now Derek, I'm glad that there are people like you in the world. Haven't heard from TJ since he got out of the sport a few years ago. Good guy. We'll, I'm still in Tampa, although I fly back to Denver once or twice a month to check up on the house. The motorhome seems to break more than the house. Plan is to kick out of Tampa mid-May, and drive up the east coast before coming back to Denver for the summer. I told you - there never was a nest egg! So I don't have anything to lose Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

No joke. I started out the weekend on even par with all the ladies, and by the end of the weekend, they were all flying circles around me in the tunnel! But it's cool to see my friends do so well, at least Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

FYI: I was at the Red Horse on Saturday night, April 2. The discounted rate for tunnel flyers has increased to $45 starting January 1. Rumor: Olav mentioned that the Motel 6 no longer offers discounts for tunnel flyers. Don't know first hand if this is true or not. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

That's kinda what I was thinking. I don't fly a wingsuit, but it seems like you couldn't make a round, because the entire formation would be flying in one direction horizontally. I guess wingys will have to settle for flocking dives. Atmonauti at best. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

As I sit here in a cold conference room in sunny Tampa, I realize that in three weeks, I'll be driving two hours over to Orlando to go hang in the tunnel with eener and some fellow dz.commers Of course, I'm feeling a bit chilled, so I think I'll just wander outside to the sunny 70-degree weather and warm up a bit Maybe I'll go to the beach after work today.
