  1. I totally agree - I even love the way he's acted in the movies by Alan Rickman. I used to think he was really a good guy in disguise, but I no longer believe it. No matter how deep undercover, you don't kill your companions - that's just wrong. Snape is evil, in my book. I also don't believe the theory of Dumbledore having a horcrux - I think it was described as a terrible thing by Dumbledore, because you have to split your soul, and I don't think Dumbledore would stoop that low. But I was certainly wrong in my guess about who the HBP was (I think we all were ), so I know I could be wrong about these things too. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  3. I went to a school that prides itself on being the best school for geophysics and "mineral engineering" (whatever that means), so I became a geology geek, even though I never wanted to be Quick link on Montana seismology: http://neic.usgs.gov/neis/states/montana/montana_history.html When a mag8 hits NorCal, it's all over the news, but five of them have hit Montana since 1925, and no one cares - it's about how many people get killed, I guess. 5. You don't hear much about earthquakes in Montana - I guess because so few people live there. But in actuality, it has more earthquakes than most states. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  6. Also, fax spam is illegal. It was outlawed by congress years ago, due to the "cost-shifting" of advertising to the consumer (use of consumer's paper, fax, etc). http://www.keytlaw.com/faxes/junkfaxlaw.htm Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  7. Well, again, I don't consider a drink "healthy" based solely on it's ability to reduce caloric intake. But if you think that drinking diet soda helps you keep your weight down, you may want to check out this link: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/13/health/webmd/main701408.shtml Trapped on the surface of a sphere. 8. I disagree that juice is less healthy than soda, based entirely on caloric content, or even on carbohydrate content. Keeping weight off can't be compared to ingesting known carcinogens. Yes, just about anything ingested in large quantites is unhealthy. Moderation is key to any diet, but less chemicals and less food processing beats fewer calories, IMO. 9. Go to the kitchen store and buy a good quality citrus juicer for $30. Then go to the natural foods store and buy a sack of organic oranges. When you're in need of a fix, cut two oranges in half, juice and drink immediately (make sure to wash the juicer immediately, too). You'll be amazed at how good it tastes, and you'll be happy with how much better you feel. In the long run, you might even save money. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  15. No joke - the Quidditch World Cup alone could be a two-hour movie. Before the HBP came out, I re-read Books 5 and 3. I'm half-way through four now - it's one of my favorites. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  16. When I was at the Orlando tunnel last year I found a cell phone lying next to the sidewalk. It had the name "peaches" on it. I called the last number dialed - it was her boyfriend in Michigan, who had no idea who "peaches" was, and didn't know the phone number. Then I called the next number dialed - it was her mom. She didn't know who peaches was either, and didn't know the number - my mom's the same, she doesn't know anyone's number, just programs the speed-dial. The funny thing was that "peaches" was her daughter and they were both there in Florida scouting out colleges, and her mom already knew her daughter lost her cell phone, but didn't make the connection. Then I called the next number dialed - it was her dad who vaguely remembered that some of her friends nicknamed her peaches. He called her mom, who came to the hotel with her daughter to get the phone. I don't know what college her daughter ended up going to, but I hope she didn't take her mom's brains with her. I lock my cell phone so that it has my name, email address and my alternate phone number displayed on it. Maybe I'll add emergency contact on there as well. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

  19. Same thing happened to me. I ordered two copies - one for my step-mom that lives one mile away. UPS left it on her door on time. But they gave mine to the post office, who put a slip in my mailbox and promptly closed, so I had to wait until Monday to get it. Amazon is refunding the cost of the book. I just finished it - wanted to not view this thread until then in case there were any spoilers. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  20. Saw it on IMAX. I thought $13 for a ticket was high, but the theater was packed, so I guess it was worth it. It was pretty good - the visuals were perfect, some of the dialogue was weak, but overall a very fun movie. I think the comparison to Jackson had a lot to do with Depp's look. White makeup and Beetles haircut with latex gloves. That and the high-pitched, squeaky voice. Also, the preview for HP was great! Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  21. LOL! The whole story with the Grove is a funny one. It's the largest artificial reef in the world. It was supposed to be sunk upright at this big ceremony they had planned, but hours before the ceremony, there was a misfire in only one of the explosives, and the ship listed, then rolled over and sank upside down. The story gets better because the ship sank in such a way as to leave the bow protruding above the surface of the water. This, of course, created a hazard for other ships, so the government had to hire an outside company for a few million dollars to pull the ship onto it's side, so that at least it was below the surface. That was back in 2002. Now, only a few years later, Dennis pushed it back upright! But it does look like it's going to be shut down for a while so they can make sure it's safe to dive again. Good thing I'm not actually leading the dive trip to the keys anymore - they'll have to make do with some of the more shallow wrecks. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
  22. Those of you that dive might be interested in this story. I was just at the Spiegel Grove a few months ago scouting it out for my dive shop, and I was scheduled to take a group of divers there in a few weeks. http://www.divenewswire.com/NewsITems.aspx?newsID=7453 Trapped on the surface of a sphere. 24. A recent statistic polled Americans, and found out that about 25% of them never tried or even experimented with illegal drugs. Considering the prevailance in our country, and the lifespan of 70-80 years, I think that's a pretty big number. Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD
