A bit, but now's a good time to be in the sport. The safety equipment is great, the materials they're using for rigs and canopies is great, the body flight disciplines are awesome and the current generation of wingsuits is really nice. I don't think wingsuiting would have been an option for me a decade or so ago. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

unstable exits (large man meets small door)
FlyingRhenquest replied to point-break's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Nah, I usually just dive out. Last time I went to full altitude in it, my leg fell asleep about halfway up and I ended up just skootching around and rolling out. I'm not as large as the OP and can get a decently poised exit from the door of the plane. I did find that doors that gave me trouble magically got bigger as I progressed in the sport. King Air, perfect example. Getting my fat ass, a rig with a Nav 300 in it and 2 AFF instructors out the door of a king air was a royal pain. Even in coaching I didn't enjoy it so much compared to the Otter. Now, I have no trouble getting out of that plane. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. unstable exits (large man meets small door)
FlyingRhenquest replied to point-break's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was a few jumps into my A license before I had a really stable exit. I could get stable shortly thereafter, but couldn't actually exit stable for anything. You're flying from the moment you're off the plane, so just hold a heading toward the front of the plane until your forward moment stops, and arch! At some point you will get it, and then it will be easy. I find it hard to actually be unstable at exit time anymore. If you dive out with your ass to the prop, you're gonna have a bad time. I see this fairly regularly on student hop and pops. I'm pretty sure that was also my problem on a lot of my early exits. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. It doesn't really seem like it. The Times Call is an irrelevant little rag, just one step above the free "Newspapers" that someone keeps littering my lawn with. Honestly they're probably just beating this dead horse because it's really about the only news that ever happens in Longmont. Well, other than the occasional stabbing. And the city council seems to generally be pretty reasonable in their dealings with Mile Hi. They're well aware that they'd be in danger of having to retroactively repay millions of dollars in FAA grants if they made a concerted effort to push the dropzone out. 37 Million cheating spouses are panicking right about now...

I should really write a perl script to harvest the E-Mail addresses so divorce lawyers can get in touch with them. Just set up a big kanban board where divorce lawyers can come and start work on the next address in the list. I bet it would be pretty lucrative! Hah, I've been eyeing the Storm rental rig at the DZ. Maybe I should take it for a spin. I'm just loading my Safire 2 at 1.1:1 and never have a problem with the openings. I did on the first wingsuit jump I did -- body position. Lots of line twists, but had the altitude to kick them out. Had a bunch just recently due to my rig's legstraps riding unevenly. Other than that, it's been smooth sailing over the last 50 wingsuit jumps. I was honestly a bit surprised over the people raising a fuss in that Squirrel video for their new wingsuiting canopy, and some other complaints I've heard recently about bad openings on wingsuits. Mine are usually pretty nice and I think more on-heading than my belly jumps tend to be. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

I've seen similar stunts a couple times on Youtube. I'm not quite that confident in my swoop and dock skills, but I can't imagine it'd be much more than a high-stakes stunt for someone who's had a few thousand jumps worth of practice at that. Add in a cameraman with an extra set of clips in case you fuck up, and it would be almost safeish. Of course, you'd have to go outside the USA to do it. Troublesome FAA regs. Plane to plane transfers seem like they'd be much more fun. Plus, you save yourself a pack job! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Clearly the drive works by creating a quantum virtual burrito. As long as there's a burrito in the microwave, there's guaranteed to be thrust! This hypothesis may seem ridiculous, but no less so than any other hypothesis that has been put forth. Really, I could have said "Pony Magic" or "Fairies" and probably been about equally as accurate. Inflatable ‘space elevator’ - new jump platform
FlyingRhenquest replied to DeeBeeGee's topic in The Bonfire
Meh, I prefer to stay in the part of the atmosphere where I don't have to bring my own oxygen. Just let me out at 20 grand in my wingsuit and I'd be quite happy. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
Yup. Someone on NPR lamented about all the children who wouldn't be able to meet him. But it's not really about what your life could have been, but what you actually did with it, and he did a lot of good in the time he had. People who have paid for ALL of their jumps

Coming up on 400 now, having started in July of 2012. I'd guesstimate neighborhood of 11 grand on non-coach jumps. AFF and coach jumps were somewhat more expensive. I've also spent a similar amount in equipment since I started. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
AFF student with not so great success
FlyingRhenquest replied to acho's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The PLF is the parachute landing fall. They should have demonstrated it to you in ground school. Perhaps they called it something else. Make them show you again! I practiced it a few times in ground school, and quite a bit since then. I've also demonstrated it for a few students. It's a lot easier to practice on padded floors or carpet. A properly executed PLF when you know your landing is going to hell could mean the difference between you walking away from it or not. I was quite proud when on my first night jump, after they said "It's going to look fast when you're coming in!" I did a picture perfect PLF without even thinking about it, because it not only looked fast, it WAS fast. The winds had shifted after the lights had been set up, and we were all landing downwind. Needless to say, I wouldn't put complete faith in any one thing. They're just tools in your arsenal. Try to get better at landing, too. As soon as you can get a canopy course, that should help a lot. They'll help you clean your pattern up, too. Your instructor probably sees a lot of people over the course of time that you're working with him, so it's often a good idea to remind them what you're having trouble with. So if you're finding yourself always high on final, tell him "Hey! I'm always high on final! What can I do to my pattern to fix that?" My landings were crap for the first 50 or so jumps. After that they ere still crap but I could stand one up occasionally. Coming up on 400 jumps, they're just starting to get to the point where I feel pretty good about them. They were so bad that early on, I committed to doing several PLFs on coach jumps, no matter how good I thought the landing was going to be. I still have a pretty good PLF. The PLF is your friend. Learn it. Live it. Love it. Also, canopy course early and often, will help a lot. Once you get licensed, you can do hop and pops until you feel comfortable landing. In the near term, discuss extensively, the canopy bits with your instructors. What to do when things go wrong, how to clean up your pattern, that sort of thing. Focus on the thing you feel you suck the most at, and stay on it until you get better at it. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -

I guess the court is just going to... hold it for them... or something? Also, wouldn't they normally just want the full amount? Is she planning to tack on more? Because our parking lot and road out to the pick-up area sure could use some paving! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Sabre 2 vs. other canopies?
FlyingRhenquest replied to wicodefly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Sabre 2, or a Sabre 1 with a pocket slider. You could have a rigger put a pocket slider in a sabre 2, as well, I suppose. I have several hard openings logged on the rental one at the DZ. One day the rigger tweaked the line trim, as several people had been complaining about the end cells not inflating very quickly at lighter wing loadings, and I never had another hard opening out of it. I ended up buying a Safire 2, which typically has very nice openings and is fun to fly. It CAN spank you if you pack it badly, though. The end cells also seem to inflate slowly on it, but they always do seem to inflate. I'd totally buy another Safire whenever this one's too worn out to jump anymore. If they get their way with the Mile High Lawsuit, I guarantee you the racetrack (among other things) is next. These people think they're entitled! They want it their way, and will not stop here. It's the Florida condo crab syndrome. There are a lot of old people moving here from Florida at the moment, for the legal weed and gay marriage. Or maybe Global Warming. I wanted to move closer to the airport than I did, but you can't find anything on that side of town that doesn't have an HOA. The HOA is the preferred territory for the condo crab. They just scuttle into their HOA-covered condo, clack their pincers and poke their eyestalks up in their windows to watch their neighbors for any signs of any infraction. They're typically retirees on a fixed income, whose grandchildren (for some reason) never call them, so they have nothing to do all day other than try to make everyone else's lives as miserable as theirs is. The Florida Condo Crab is the natural enemy of anything even remotely fun. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Hah! Scuba's safe-ish, but I think the only two things I know of that are more dangerous than wingsuit proximity base are cave diving and surfing the tsunamis created by falling glaciers (Yes, that's actually a thing!)
