My green chili doesn't cause many problems. I do try to hold in any... emissions... until I get off the plane in any event, because ever since I hit my late 30s, what I'm producing falls under the category of "Industrial Pollution." Or maybe "Biological Warfare." I'm pretty sure there's a UN convention on that sort of thing. So yeah, I'd rather exercise a little self control than subject my fellow skydivers to that. I figure I can fart all I want, once I get out the door. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Yeah I used to like to tail my logs and watch the hackers trying to brute force my ssh server. They'd keep that damn thing going for weeks at a time. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

As much of a Linux evangelist as I am, I feel that Windows can be reasonably secure with a few precautions. Keep it current with its updates, run a virus scanner regularly, use the firewall and don't run IE, for starters. I run firefox or chrome with plug-ins that only allow whitelisted sites to run javascript (No one gets to run Java) or flash. I also don't use the same password for various web sites. That way if a site is compromised and passwords leaked, it can't lead to a takeover of my gmail one. If you used web-based E-Mail, you'll want to take steps to insure the security of your E-Mail password, particularly if all your other sites can be reset from that one. If you want to be really paranoid, you can keep a separate account (With a separate password) just for resetting other sites. I don't go that far. Make sure you never access your web mail from a public terminal or over an unsecured wifi network. If you want to try out Linux, a number of distributions offer live CDs you can download and check it out without installing. Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/) is pretty popular these days. Personally I think their default GUI sucks, but you can just install Enlightenment and you don't have to mess with any of that. Just choose "Enlightenment" as your session before you log in. Keep in mind that most windows software won't run on Linux. You can sometimes persuade some of it to, if you beat your head against the Wine not-an-emulator hard enough. So if you game a lot, Linux is probably not an ideal solution (though Valve just released steam for it.) If you just use your computer for E-Mail, web browsing and document processing, Linux might be a good use case for you. I use it for software development, prefer it to anything else for that. Apple's OSX is also a unix derivative, so if Linux is just a little too underground for you, you could always buy a Mac. Same windows compatability issues apply. I put some bacon curry lentil soup in the crock pot about half an hour ago. The house is already starting to smell good, and I still have 3 1/2 hours before it's done. It's going to be a long wait, but I got all the ingredients for $20 and it's going to keep me fed for a week, so I'm happy Hmm. I should probably bring some to the drop zone tomorrow. They really liked my green chili when I brought some of that in. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Statistically I know the number is pretty low, but an awful lot of bad things seem to happen to an awful lot of cruise ships. I think I'll be inclined to pass on that particular mode of vacationing for the foreseeable future. You really don't want to be the one who gets stuck on the poo cruise for a week. Heh, funny story, a few years back I was talking to our IT guy and he made the assertion that Windows was more secure than Linux. I told him I had an open connection to the internet at home and suggested that we set up two networked computers on it, he could install windows, I could install Linux and we'd see who'd get taken over first. He did some mighty fine backpedaling at that point. I'd read a story right around that time that your typical windows install, if you were so unwise as to install it on an open connection, would be taken over before the installation had completed. But security is a journey, not a destination. Just because you're running Linux doesn't mean you crap daisies and unicorns either. There are still all manner of methods your system can be taken over in. Operating system choice is just one component of your overall security strategy. Romanians get all defensive the minute you bring up Vlad the Impaler. They seem to generally hold him in high regard. Either that or they're still worried about getting impaled... I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Some of my favorite jumps so far have been on marginal weather days! Including a couple of 20 knot wind-speed landings and my first really stable exit, after flying around for 15 minutes trying to find holes in rain clouds! That's pretty much what they do. If anyone followed those links they've likely been hacked too by now, so I'm sure they'll understand your situation shortly. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

I have a Buddhist lecture around here somewhere on "What is Love?" Quite often, he claims, love is a selfish feeling. When you say "I love you," you really mean, "I love how you make ME feel." If this is the case, it's easy to see how that feeling can turn to anger when you no longer feel that way. He goes on to assert that if you really love someone, you'll be happy for them when they run off with the postman, because they found joy with that person. Such selfless love is much rarer and much less easily corrupted. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Getting started and turning it into a career

Well now you need to talk to a dropzone about training. You can go AFF, where you're mostly solo but a couple instructors come along to coach you in mid-air and deploy for you if you don't, or static line, which (I gather) they chuck you out that plane with a line attached to deploy your parachute. Not too clear on that last one, I did AFF. You can find a lot of youtube videos on the subject if you want to see what each one looks like. Either way the results seem to end up the same. A lot of folks put up all 7 of their AFF jumps, sometimes even edited together into one long video. Making a living from the sport seems to involve a fair bit of training. Maybe some other folks can speak to that. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
That road isn't even that interesting. Now for an interesting road, see attached: Ooh I like it! The mountains around here and Trail Ridge Road are the hairiest roads I ever drive on. Most of the time there's too much traffic to really open the car up. Skydiving has pretty much replaced that for my adrenaline fix now. It's still pretty funny to go up on trail ridge road and watch the flatlanders being terrified of the thousand foot drops. They'll ride as long as they can six inches over the double yellows and grudgingly pull back over when oncoming traffic shows up. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Whoopsie! Looks like you might want to be careful with that car on the stretch of road between Longmont and Estes Park! Heh heh heh. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Software engineering or whatever other technical work looked interesting for the past couple decades. Degree, well, I was sick of college after a year and decided to get a job for a while. I really did intend to go back and finish it off, but not having one didn't seem to slow me down all that much. After the first decade, employers stopped asking about it so much. I have a few libraries up on github if you're curious. I don't often have anything interesting to write code for, though I'm currently considering writing a jmeter plugin to allow TCL-like expect/send functionality across ssh channels. It wouldn't be terribly difficult, though it's not really what jmeter's supposed to be for. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

The other day my favorite sushi chef had just got some giant clam in, and I just had to try it. So he's cutting me some pieces and says "Oh... it's still moving. Don't worry, it's dead, that's just muscle spasms." I'm pretty sure he knows I'm not particularly freaked out by that sort of thing -- I watched a half-lobster squirm for about half an hour while eating some lobster sashimi he made for me a couple months ago. I thought it funny that he'd say that, though. So I tell him, "I'm not scared!" It was very good giant clam, too! Doesn't get much fresher than that! Back for a Second Round 35 years later

Mr. Germain's video is a rather extreme case. I'd have cut it away as soon as I realized it was no ordinary line twist. I imagine the spinning would have clued me in pretty quickly. That man is a trained professional, do not attempt at home. Don't let the turbines intimidate you! Jumping out of them is not so different than jumping out of a Cessna. The turbine planes are a somewhat more comfortable ride to altitude. I did AFF and liked it, but it does require rounding up instructors to jump with you. At low traffic DZs this might be a problem. Either way, I think you'll like how the sport has progressed. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -

Don't forget your pop tarts, for vitamin C. If all you eat is Ramen, you'll get scurvey! (Disclaimer: Does not constitute dietary advice.) I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
Just take some duct-tape and tape them up into a neat little package! You can add a little more duct tape for aerodynamic styling! It'll just pull right off when you're done! I pity the guys you're between on the ride up, though... I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Did you try the medical marijuana? I hear it does wonders for pain and stress. Talk to your doctor, yadda yadda. Even if you don't live in a state where it's legal, it's probably still worth discussing. Maybe you could arrange to take a medical vacation in a state where it is. I'll agree with all those things. In particular, not taking any brakes. I've hit up on problems at work that seem impossible toward the end of the day, but after a night's sleep I sort them out in the first hour of the day. Probably the most stressful time of my life was as a student, and if I'd just procrastinated projects less and had enough design time and breaks while doing them, I think they'd all have been a lot easier. Transportation from LAX to Skydive Perris?
FlyingRhenquest replied to npng's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Ugh, see this is what bugs me about transportation to dropzones. You're coming from a place where airplanes go, and you're going to a place where airplanes go! It doesn't seem like it should be THAT much of a stretch to make an airplane go from here... to here! See what I'm saying? Decades of general aviation and we still need to take a car between these two points? Feels like the system's broken, somewhere! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind.
