Can I have your stuff? I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

When I took my first contracting job with IBM, the contracting manager took us newbies aide and told us, "They're going to tell you a lot of things about working here, but I'll tell you the most important one right now; Cover Your Ass." Of course, if you read between the lines, the easiest way to do that is to do the job that's expected of you. If everyone covers their ass in this way, then the company runs quite efficiently. IBM's a bit different from other companies I've worked for in that you can ask your manager for your job description and they can get the process book down off the shelf and show you exactly what's expected of you. The company has, what, about a century of experience running now? They have some quirks, but they're damn good at it. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Newbie wondering if skydiving is for me
FlyingRhenquest replied to DKane's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Why not give it a shot and see? It's not like you have to drop 10 grand in gear right at the start or anything. You don't even have to pre-pay for the entire AFF course if you're not sure you're going to like it. The huge adrenaline rush dies down pretty quickly as you get used to doing it, so you might get bored with it if that's all you're after. I was surprised at how rewarding it was to learn how to control my body for freefall maneuvers. You start to feel like a gymnast. Plus it turns out I really like that feeling of flying. Ultimately only you can answer whether it's something you want to do long term. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
I rented an all-wheel-drive Subaru while my sister was here, and it was pretty reasonable. Of course, the sports cars I usually drive get sub-20 mpg around town, so pretty much seems reasonable. An older Honda Accord might work, too. The beater Honda I got for winter driving gets mid 20s (24-26) around town and was sure-footed enough to get me down to the airport in the middle of that big blizzard we had on Friday. It has all season radials on it. I was actually pretty impressed by its performance in those conditions. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

That's what you get for trusting some rodent to predict the weather. Though in his defense, Punxsutawney Phil was also wrong. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Can we have your liver, then? I want to donate my body to science, but I want them to put a little Alien doll in me so that when they're dissecting me it suddenly pops out of my chest! That'd be awesome! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Maybe buy a gripmaster and work on your death grip. It's great for crushing competitive guys' hands, hanging on to airplanes while climbing around on the outside of them, and whenever you find a new BF they might appreciate it, too. You know... because you won't be asking them to open jars all the time. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

South Jersey Newbie With Some Questions
FlyingRhenquest replied to mjoie27's topic in Introductions and Greets
I suspect the nightmares will probably calm down as you get comfortable with the gear and the process of jumping. It may take a while but you seem to be able to convince your subconscious that what you're doing is survivable and reasonably safe. You could also check to see if you're dreaming if you find yourself in that situation and take control of the dream if the answer is yes. If you get good at that, you don't need to take crap from dreams anymore. I had a lot of nightmares as a child and learned how to do this as a defense mechanism. I have the same problem you do as far as gear goes. Someone was selling a full system at my DZ that was just a little too small and a little too new for me. I have a guy over there keeping an eye out for me. If you watch the classifieds, you'll see them pop up from time to time. It's a little harder, but it's not impossible. Huh. I've only been through a couple of layoffs, but both times they did actually get rid of the people who were either completely clueless or who had a reputation for slacking off. I was actually pretty surprised because there'd been no indication that management was paying that much attention. They act like it's practically impossible to fire a full time employee except during a layoff, even though I live in an "at-will" state. Most of the time the slacker ends up leaving on their own. Those sorts of people need to keep moving, or their ineptitude eventually catches up with them. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

In the military you rely on your team and if someone slacks off it can get someone killed. In the civilian world it's much more every-man-for-himself. The rare team that works well together is very nice, but you almost never encounter one. It's probably best to keep your head down and worry about your own work. You can be pretty sure that the company DOES know who the slackers are. Most of the time they quit on their own. Otherwise don't be surprised if in the next round of layoffs, that's the guy who gets the axe. If you look at him as the fat that's going to get cut, it's still helping your actually productive team members. Corporate politics can be infuriating and drive you insane if you let them. It's always better to stay out of that and let things take care of themselves. Rocking the boat pretty much always brings attention you don't want. That's just because it's fun to watch the solo belly noobs sit next to the door and try to open it. Just wait until summer, they'll open that goddamn thing for 6000 feet with you just jammed right in there! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Bwahahaha! Well, while I was on coach status we had an 8 way go out of the king air. That was basically everyone in the plane! All that was left was me, my coach and one wingsuit guy. We DID have plenty of time for exit separation after they left! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -

Terrified of the wind tunnel

Agreed! Although it won't help you overcome your claustrophobia, CRW is the most fun I've had with multiple layers of clothing on (been jumping pretty hard this winter...) As for overcoming fear, I don't really have much useful advice. I'm currently trying to overcome a fear of spiders, and want don't want want to get a tarantula (Brachypelma Smithi to be precise). Other than exposure theory, I wouldn't really know how to overcome your claustrophobia. I used to be scared of spiders too...but after a recent trip to Thailand I decided to be adventurous and have one of them street vendor bbq'd tarantula...it was actually pretty damn good! So do you get like a whole spider on a stick with that, or just like some sandwich where you can't tell what meat it is or something? I'd try it... at least once! I have most of the code in place. I just need to write a state machine to analyze the jumps. I suppose I should get on that... Reading a GPX or KML file and sucking all the points out isn't particularly hard. I have a factory up on github to do one for GPX, since that's what I happen to be using. You need to pull two or three libraries down in order to use them. It'd be pretty easy to convert to Java or something if you prefer that language. The only example I have of reading a file in and dumping the points to Google Earth is GPS satellites with 2-day old coordinates from NGA, but I have a class for lat/long/altitudes and the Google Earth code actually requires those. Really? My son is in the market for a new laptop and wondered if he should save up for a Macbook Pro. I'd love to get you started on why they're not worth it! The one I owned was prone to overheating. I had a desktop of theirs that also liked to overheat -- to the point where it actually cooked the video card! It's still serving files downstairs in the basement with a lower-end, cooler-running video card installed in it. The laptop I got had an ATI video card in it that was pretty feeble when I got it, much less a couple years later. I kind of hate buying a shiny new top-of-the-line laptop with a ton of RAM and then chaining it to an ATI boat-anchor of a video card. Gentlemen, I have a proposal! I propose that every citizen of the USA shall receive from the government the following items: One Glock 9mm pistol One box of hollowpoint ammunition One multi-watt laser pointer One... No, make that TWO extremely fucking dangerous magnets. (That's 20 pounds of magnets, bitches!) One 50 gallon drum filled with assorted fireworks Once anyone likely to weed themselves out of the gene pool when handed those items does so, we can discuss our new utopia!
