I wouldn't feel comfortable making that big a jump all at once. It seems like your eyes get used to landing at a certain speed. The old guys call it sight picture. I'm at 100 jumps and just now getting comfortable jumping a 230 (I'm 223 -- 250 out the door with the gear on.) If I'd gone straight to the 230, it'd have felt freakishly fast to me. I'm not planning to go any lower for the foreseeable future. Does your dropzone have interim gear you could use to step down to that size? Your best bet is to work with an instructor to do it safely. You could probably still get that gear, if you think that's where you're going to stop, just work your way down to it safely. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Name a food that can not be made better with Bacon
FlyingRhenquest replied to jgoose71's topic in The Bonfire
Maybe you're a supertaster. How do you feel about black coffee, dark chocolate and wine? Supertasters typically don't like these things. You can get a test for it out on teh internets (Google on "Supertaster test" if you're curious.) It's a strip of paper treated with a chemical that tastes bletcherous to supertasters. Us normals can't taste it. If you are, you could have an exciting new career as a royal food taster, or something. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Oh yeah, and Robin's Chcoclates down the street occasionally makes bacon peanut brittle. Yum! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -

Nothing I've found so far. One of the food wagons that parks over in the park during the summer does cupcakes with bacon in them and chocolate chip cookies with bacon in them. My experiment with chocolate covered bacon didn't turn out that well, but that's just because I didn't cook the bacon crispy enough, and used untempered chocolate. It's on my "retry" list. Skydiving and sinus problems?
FlyingRhenquest replied to JMC's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Odd thing is my sinuses are typically pretty fucked up but they seem to be better on days when I jump. My allergies will be killing me, I'll go do a jump or two and they'll stop bothering me for a few days. 'Course sometimes when I get down my goggles look like that one scene from Alien... This really isn't something that can be described. As a zen master must whack his students with a bamboo stick until they become enlightened, so too must you jump out of an airplane until you become enlightened. Also talk to you instructor before "taking a wrap" with the steering lines around your hands while you're still a student. Only do so if cleared to do it by your instructor. Yah. He was all like "That didn't look like a stall! Do it again and wrap the steering lines around your hands two or three times this time!" It stalled real nice after that! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

One of the exercises in my canopy course was fully stalling the canopy and recovering. I had to wrap the steering lines on my student canopy around my hands 3 times to get the damn thing to actually stall. You do this sort of thing above your decision altitude so you can cut away and pull the reserve if something goes wrong. Which is a round-about way of saying it's OK to stall it, as long as you're doing it correctly. I prefer to engage in a battle of wills with my room mate, in which we see which of us can tolerate the most hair growing on the bath tub before sometime finally caves and scrubs it. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

From what I hear, it's not so much fun once you turn it into a job. 'course I get to be a mad scientist during the day and derive a tremendous amount of satisfaction (And large briefcases full of cash) from that. I might feel differently if I were in a suck job. Watching a Hop-n-Pop leave: what not to do
FlyingRhenquest replied to Divalent's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I lost a helmet on one of my coach jumps. Hell of it is, I'd checked the straps several times and my coach had checked them at least twice. Got out of a plane, started my track and off it went. It came back to me several months later -- I'd put a sticker on the inside with my name on it and a lady found it in her back yard one day, googled my name and sent me an E-Mail. Fortunately no damage was done to their property and the helmet still seems usable but I'm not sure I trust it anymore. When I checked the straps I couldn't find any tightness that would allow it to fasten that wouldn't prevent it from leaving my head. I checked it a couple months later and didn't have the same problem. Weird. I'm a lot more paranoid about my current helmet and leave it on and fastened if we have hop and pops. I'll usually take it off for at least some of the ride in the summer, though. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -

Yeah, see, we don't have that in Colorado. Sometimes it pretends it's going to, sometimes it pretends it actually is but if you check it's dry between the drops. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Watching a Hop-n-Pop leave: what not to do

Oh no!! If it doesn't have a skydiving helmet embedded in its forehead there's no evidence! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
My AFF instructor had a horror story about landing on concrete with an split-toe sandal of some sort and near about ripping his big toe off. It's kind of put me off trying to jump with the ninja boots I wear for just about everything else. I just use a plain ol' pair of $20 sneakers from Target. I thought about it until I found out how much they cost. I'd rather put that money into gear for the next few years. A lot of folks at the dropzone have awesome ones. A lot of people in Boulder have them too. They always tell you "Think how this will look when you're 70 and all that skin is sagging" but you're going to look like ass when you're 70 anyway, so you may as well enjoy yourself in the mean time! We can't do that, it's an ancient Chinese secret. DO tell! http://el-pollo-del-diablo.deviantart.com/art/Ancient-Chinese-secret-10034994 Hmmm... I'm gonna have to explore that site later. It's hit or miss. They do have a nudie section. There's good stuff on the front page often enough to visit once in a while. Then occasionally you get something like a werewolf vagina killing and eating another werewolf vagina. That was a bad day... I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. My DZ has mirage and vector rental gear and they're both pretty nice rigs. I kind of like the magnetic riser covers on a couple of the larger vectors there a bit more than tuck tabs, but I've heard some people have problems with them, too. I'm leaning toward the Vector if I had a choice, but I don't really want to wait until next year to get a rig. Both brands are obviously able to take a lot of abuse -- we have newbies doing all sorts of stuff to them and they're holding up VERY well. Both brands are very comfortable and the construction appears to be pretty solid to my untrained eye. I've had some skydivers go on about the benefits of the skyhook at me, but I view it as a nice-to-have option. My hard deck is high enough that a couple hundred extra feet on the reserve opening wouldn't be a problem. If you're a chronic low-puller, that's something to consider. Hop and pops annoying?
FlyingRhenquest replied to OneJumpWally's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
We did a full load with no hop and pops last Sunday. That was actually more annoying. Any time you save crossing the jump run again is probably lost in the extra work it takes to get the extra weight to full altitude. Plus you have to fold some passengers to get everyone aboard, and you have to remain folded all the way up. I had to perform some yoga to allow the tandem instructors room to get their students hooked up. Annoyance is kind of a relative term though. I'm about to jump out of a plane. It's pretty hard to harsh my mellow. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
