There were three or four times when I talked myself out of going to the DZ during my training because I didn't want to deal with that. I did eventually go do it, though. I thought I was over door fear this spring but rode up sitting on the floor in front of it one day and when they opened it to cool things off on the ride to altitude, I felt my knees creeping away from it. I stared at them thinking, "Huh... that's interesting..." Of course, now I'm making it a point to seek out a spot close to it until I can just hang my foot out the door for 3000 feet as I've seen my instructors do. I also make it a point to stick my hand out the door whenever I'm close enough to it. That makes you 20% cooler in the eyes of the tandem students! Nobody's exits are ever that great just starting out. Just have fun with your not-great exits until they get great! I think I was in the mid 30s before I had a really stable exit. We were flying around looking for a hole in the clouds and finally found one at 8000 feet. I'd been planning to grab both edges of the door, throw myself out and grab my ankles for some epic flips. About halfway through that motion I remembered we were at 8000 feet and I didn't have a lot of time to screw around. So I ended up just throwing myself out and going into an arch. This was the first time I really felt the relative wind trying to turn me to the left and I knew if it did I'd go tumbling, so I steered right and suddenly suddenly I was stable. Once that clicks you'll be able to make stable exits as long as you're facing the relative wind. I still have trouble staying stable if I turn my ass to it before I get off the hill. I don't flip over anymore, but it feels very sketchy. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
Looking to start this winter!

Pff! You don't have to worry about whether your friends can ride along to watch you jump or not, if they're going to jump out of the plane too! It's a perfect excuse to drag someone along for a tandem! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
I'm sure every single one of us thought of that when we saw the subject. Most of us decided it was just TOO EASY! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

You could almost probably get away with stashing a small smartphone that would have all the components you'd need, with battery life being the main problem. Ignoring that, I wonder if you could have a rigger sew an unobtrusive pocket onto the rig somewhere where it wouldn't be too noticeable and wouldn't interfere with the normal operation of the rig. Making sure the thing's actually in the rig and fully charged if it's ever actually stolen might not be feasible either. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. My home DZ doesn't seem to have any trouble bringing in the tandems. The more you clutter google up with useless crap, the harder that is to find the real business. I imagine it's just luck that I didn't get sucked in by skyride last year when I was looking for training. I also feel like as a fun jumper, word of mouth from me is a nice asset for promoting that DZ as a fun place to jump. I've only brought in about $1000 worth of tandems in the last year, but get a couple hundred of us talking to co-workers about what we do for fun on the weekend and it starts to add up. One of my co-workers who came with me for a tandem is already talking about wanting to go into AFF training as soon as he can afford it. Pushing Code Around On Github Again
FlyingRhenquest replied to FlyingRhenquest's topic in The Bonfire
I just sent up gpx2kml. The kml data file it generates is pretty raw, but at least some of the jumps I did that day clearly stand out in the data stream. Funnily enough they're easier to spot in raw data than on google earth. if you generate a KML file and then scroll down through it, it's very easy to spot "This is where a jump started." Now I need to add a filter to break those out to separate linestrings, interpolate the points (1 second data points are too chunky,) and change the color of the linestring for "under canopy." Pushing Code Around On Github Again
FlyingRhenquest replied to FlyingRhenquest's topic in The Bonfire
I'm sitting on my jumps until my main canopy arrives (Hopefully by Thursday) so I decided to do a bit of coding this weekend. I've: * Added a bunch of objects for KML generation to my XML library * Added a to_string to my xml node, so you can write XML programatically if you want to. * Added some string conversion routines to my time library (time_to_string, anything_to_string) * Started writing a GPX to KML converter to plot my GPS tracks on Google Earth. If you're interested in any of that you can find all the source code on Github. The interesting libraries are cppxml, time, data and coordinates (You'll also need cppunit_contrib if you want to compile the tests.) Does it always devolve into a discussion about killing your co-workers, or has someone been reading too many BOFH stories again? I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Yeah, when I went to Romania, they smoke a lot of unfiltered Camels over there. One of my co-workers wanted to try my pipe and unlike my granddad I was nice enough to tell him not to inhale. He inhaled anyway. A lot. Even though he was used to smoking unfiltered camels, he turned green and started coughing, I'm sure like I did the first time I tried my graddad's pipe. Good times! My experience so far. Pretty long post ahead.
FlyingRhenquest replied to Karen89's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Tunnel? "Indoor Skydiving" vertical wind tunnel. It's a different experience than skydiving, but you fly a lot longer than you would in freefall. A lot of people use them to polish their body flying or freeflying skills. I'll PM you some links. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -
We all learn differently. When I had an instructor who told me to do stuff, asked me to repeat it, nodded and said, "cool."It was on, I rocked those AFFs. When I had instructors who talked me through the dive flow for an hour and asked me 60 questions on the ride up, i barely passed. You need to know if you're a tell me-then leave me alone learner or overteach the crap out of me learner and cherry pick your instructor, If you EP'd successfully with a cool head, you got the stuff! Keep it up. Yeah, I've noticed in the tunnel if I'm trying to pay attention to the instructor, I'm a lot more tense. I did a couple of ten minute sessions a couple months ago where I told the instructor I had no objectives and just wanted to fly around and relax and it made a remarkable difference in my flying. The next tunnel session after that I was working on stuff again and my flying is nowhere near as good. I didn't backslide a lot, but you can definitely see a difference. Dubai sentences Norwegian woman who reported rape

Yeah, that to-do item got removed from my list when I read that story. Maybe I'll visit a dropzone in Croatia instead. My experiences in Eastern Europe have generally been very good. I have less luck the further west I go. I'm always thoroughly pissed off when I'm in the UK. I suspect that's probably because of Heathrow, though. That place is enough to piss off the Pope. It seems to be designed to piss you off. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here? -

It really is a pretty cool introduction to all that sort of stuff. I get the feeling it's kind of how we did rocketry back when we put those guys on the moon. Feels like we just sort of eyeballed it, duct-taped a rocket together and shot a guy into space without worrying too much about the consequences. You better watch out though, or she'll end up wanting a $400 book on orbital mechanics next. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

Bwahaha. I'm pretty sure I didn't smoke through all my teenage years because once, when I was about 7 or 8, my grandpa and I were doing an about-2-hour hike up to Waimaia Falls Park in Hawaii. He was smoking his pipe and I asked if I could try it. He said sure and gave it to me with no explanation as to what to do with it. I was spitting for the rest of the hike trying to get the taste out of my mouth. I took to smoking a pipe myself later on. I can do (or was able to do) cigars while I was doing that but I much preferred my pipe. After a while I noticed that whenever I smoked my pipe I had a headache the next day. I assume that was my body telling me it wanted more nicotine. I didn't like the headache and I didn't want to smoke often enough that I'd never get it, so I just stopped. Funnily enough, because of the pipe smoking, taking a puff of a cigarette doesn't feel like anything to me. It's like puffing on air. It seems to me like an annoying and expensive habit with no reward whatsoever. For me at least nicotine doesn't seem to be as addictive as caffeine. I was able to quit smoking cold turkey for the last decade or so. I've never managed to quit caffeine for more than a few months. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. So to make an orbital transfer with ion engines, I'd only have to wait 2 months of real time instead of 9 months. Hooray! The secret to docking, I'm told, is common reference frame. That's a fancy way of saying always point your vehicles the same way. Then you just align to your common reference frame and slide 'er in. Or something. You don't really get to light speed in KSP. You get to "Light" speed. Kerbals don't have to worry about relativity and stuff. Which already makes it seem like a better designed universe than the one we live in. I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind. Hey... is it hot in here?

You're not going to want to cook steaks for anywhere near as long as that recipe suggests cooking those ribs. If you're grilling, the sugar in that sauce will cause it to burn very easily too. I'd tone down the sugar and brush your sauce on while grilling. Get a meat thermometer and take them off when they hit an internal temperature in the neighborhood of 130 degrees Farenheit. Let them rest for a few minutes before cutting into them. Actually personally I wouldn't use a sauce at all. I'd just hit the outside of the meat with a little kosher salt and then grill it to 130. Why go to the trouble of getting an exotic meat and then just turn it into some candy-flavored thing? But it's your groceries! I'm trying to teach myself how to set things on fire with my mind.
