Ummm...relative to what ~ Blindfolded Bomb Disposal ? Before you go in for training ya might want to study up a bit on the risk factor. It's certainly safer than when I started, probably not as safe as it will be in ten years...but make no mistake, you are purposely putting yourself into an environment that does not suffer fools. Bring your A game, listen, learn, think. A Disneyland ride is 'really' safe, make the right mistake at the wrong time while skydiving and death or injury are very real consequences. Funny you mention the Disneyland World death rate. Splash Mountian 6 dead, mostly from standing up at the end. Thunder Mountian 2 D, 3 serious fiberglass engine on first car comes off in tunnel. Skyride worker gets pushed off platform due to other worker starting ride without notice. Disney is good for 20 or so fatals because of drowning each year. Some of these might be heart attacks. Car crashes on property, esp after drinking, another 20 or so. 1 chooking in a property food establishment. Drugs, 2 -4 each year cast as well as public. Space Mountian, 1 per every 3 years due to undiagnosed congenital defects, sudden death snydrom. One confirmed suicide in the contemporary hotel, newlywedd Goofy comes home to fine new wife in bed with best man,... ETC., You might be better skydiving on a Velo 100 than going to DW. C Dude, what you mean "suck" and "safety" in that last sentance??? Now you have put your foot into it, and I'm going to point out in not as nice as Krissanne points out that you have raised a real issue and shown your true colors, that was a really stupid thing to say, if in fact your a student, and we all are really, you might be forgivin, but I suspect otherwise your really "Gerado" come back to show us all how full of yourself you really are.... You want to learn to swoop, someday, fine, but till then keep your mouth shut, do what your told and learn, and real fast learn not to speak about safety and how you think the world works from your perspective. I did say suck and safety in the same sentence but I did not mean safety sucks. I meant people who suck seem to be the worst at safety. From my experience from flying it seems like the safety nazis are the ones who see danger everywhere except under their own two feet. Being severely judgemental is a hazardous attitude that reduces safety. Just as being over confident is hazardous to safety. You have to draw a balance, you don't want to be on either extreme. I never said I want to start swooping or using equipment out of my league. It sounds like from my limited posts you are stereotyping me and judging me as some sort of reckless person you associate with wanting to swoop?? Don't know what the deal is with that. So far I have listened to everything people have said, I have no plans for filming anytime soon (did not understand the danger but now I know), and I didn't start this thread about wanting to get the worlds smallest sports canopy. -

Ok I got it. Consensus is don't buy a new student rig, wait until after 50-100 jumps and buy something better. I don't want to buy used. -

Do you want to be that golfer with the bestest, newest clubs that can't hit the ball off the tee? nah I don't want to be that guy but it's not the same. I don't want to be the guy that says you have to start on a used 250cc either. Riding a motorcycle is easy as pie. There's a balance to be drawn between suck and being safety conscious. -

You asked a question, you received an answer. Don't be upset if it's not what you wanted to hear. If you want to buy your own rig, get at it. Insure it has an RSL, AAD and a main that keeps your wing load at no more than a 1:0:1 Fly the wings off of it. You'll figure the rest out by yourself. Take a canopy course, and before you buy a main, demo, demo, demo. I would suggest a 7 cell to begin with. They're very forgiving canopies. you are making assumptions. I wasn't upset at what I didn't want to hear. But this thread is helping me realize I need to get my class A fast, because the sooner I get a license the sooner I'll learn what parachute I need. -

You should go and spend $6000-$7000 on a new gear that you can get your A license with. Better ? Just remember - you will most likely end up taking a $1000-$2000 loss on that gear when you will be selling it 50-100 jumps later. As long as that's cool - go for it. And don't forget the most likely 12-38 weeks waiting time. So if I ordered a Javelin from chuting star or something it would take minimum 12 weeks for me to get it? This is actually motivation for me to go out and start getting jumps in so I can buy stuff before winter starts. I would also suggest using the DZs gear. Do you want to be that golfer with the bestest, newest clubs that can't hit the ball off the tee? I would go to the dz you plan on doing your tandem, or sl or AFF at and talk to the instructor before you do anything else, then jump, then come back and talk to us. Have you done a tandem yet? yea I did a tandem last summer. I'm just going to buck up and start jumping, talk to people and have the goal of buying a chute within a couple of months after about 50 jumps. I'll have my license and will know more about equipment then. I was looking at the Javelin Legacy and it doesn't really look that bulky. Of course a picture does not equate to what it actually is like in real life. -

yea I guess I don't mean right away, I want to do at least a few jumps to make sure I'm not going to 'wuss out' off skydiving. But I'd like to buy it during my training as motivation, something about jumping out of a freaking airplane requires a lot of motivation. -

ok but seriously if it's a student rig just like one a DZ would rent out to students what is the difference if it's my own or theirs? sorry if I sound stupid. -

Is it possible to train for a class A license with your own parachute? I am looking at a chute from sunpath and it says it is a entry level student parachute. I feel like I'd almost rather learn with my own chute while I can with instructors who can answer my questions and give me confidence using my own gear rather than get my class A and then go at it on my own. Or am I just rationalizing a way to prematurely buy really cool equipment? I am posting this with hesitation out of fear of being chastised so please go easy on me. I really want to start doing this and I no longer have any legitimate excuses to put this off any longer. But I still have that 'sick to my stomach' feeling and am feeling guilty about wanting to do this even though I know it's really safe. -
I wouldn't use a helmet again if it cracked. It is actually more protection because when the shell cracks the energy dissipates throughout the shell, whereas if you are wearing a pro tec then all the energy from the impact is absorbed by your skull and locally.
-
Protecs don't have any specific safety certification whatsoever. The dual foam liner in a Protec is only designed to withstand multiple minor impacts, not major ones. As far as I can tell, there is no evidence that a Protec offers significantly more protection than any other skydiving helmet. If you know of such evidence, please post it. there wouldn't be any data because carbon fiber is much stronger than general plastic that the pro tech are made from. In fact carbon fiber is even stronger than some metals such as aluminum. I have heard some motocross helmets can hurt more for minor impacts since the foam is built to absorb high impact only, but I do not think this is the case with the ozone helmet, it looks like the foam is very soft and comfortable.
-
I saw the sticky, attention is a hot issue. Not interested in going there. As for the helmet, I looked at other threads. Is it because high impact helmets can be harder on the head during low impact events? Or what? I don't understand why the pro tec is the best for protection, aren't all helmets made for protection?
-
can someone explain to me why I can't get the Ozone helmet from cookie composites as a student? I am newb and posted in another thread and was told I have to get the pro-tec. I don't understand why they said the protec is the best protective helmet there is [for students]? The Ozone is a carbon shell, which is stronger than the plastic that the pro-tecs are made out of, so how can that be an issue? Is it heavier? Does the closed ear make it harder to hear people in the jump plane or the radio? I'd prefer to get something that looks nice if there is no disadvantage in doing so for a student.
-
Do those two sentences seem to go together properly to you? that was also a concern of mine, but why would you need jump experience to have a go pro on your head? They seem like they would be lightweight, I feel like once I get it and try it on I wouldn't even know that its on there. Is it possible for it to get caught in a rope twist in the event you have a rope twist?
-
lol why would I start an account to troll on this subject? Is it really that hot of an issue? haha I saw a youtube video of a jump from the school I want to go train at and it looked like the helmets they used were those skateboarding style ones which is how I know, Although they do have a brand new facility and good new gear otherwise and a really nice airplane over there. I guess I couldn't speak for *most* schools. Regardless the sweat would be an issue even if they did give students higher end ones. I just wanted to run it by a forum, who knows maybe I wouldn't be able to hear the radio since the ears are covered? Doubt that would be an issue though.

hello, I did a tandem and am thinking now about getting a class A category license. However, most skydiving school have lower quality helmets, not to mention they usually have other peoples sweat in it. So I guess I just wanted any input in the Ozone helmet by Cookie composites. http://www.cookiecomposites.com/shop/helmets/71/index.htm I know nothing about skydiving. I am planning on getting a go pro camera, there shouldn't be any problems attaching it to that helmet right? I heard it connects using an adhesive tape to any helmet, but is it really that reliable to handle the strong ~100mpg winds?! thanks
