  1. Hi SS I'm confused please help a old guy out. Since the seal is attached to the RC handle where was the other end of the seal thread connected to? R He may have put a seal on the handle simply for identification purposes in case he did lose it. Smart thinking. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  2. I'm sure there are many people with badly busted up bodies who now wished like hell they were a little more conservative with their canopy choices. You want a canopy that will give you the best chance to live to fight another day, rather than something that will punish you severely for an error on landing. Have a read of the "incidents" thread..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  3. More likely the 90's, there was nothing like that in the 70's, and tandems didn't really happen till the late 80's. Alabama, reasonably wet climate no?. I'd expect a lot of corrosion even on a SS ripcord. That one looks way too clean for me to believe it is that old. I've found lost ripcords that have been exposed to the elements for one or two years, and they all looked a lot worse than that one. 4. Well for his sake, I hope he's thought all that through... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  5. Vector tandem rigs have a reserve handle like that. If the lead seal has a riggers number stamped on it, it shouldn't be too hard to track. Corrosion depends a lot on local climate. hot and dry....little corrosion. Regular rainfall, quite a lot of corrosion. Why do you think its been there 30 years?. Was it buried beneath lots of dead vegetation?. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  6. He's a clever boy that Bill Booth fella...... A good illustration as to why modifications should not be done without some serious brainstorming of all the possible complications that could occur, followed by the question. "And what else?? 7. As long as he's got his weight and balance properly figured out, which seems part of his current problem.... As long as he is ready for it and has a contingency plan that he instantly enacts....He could easily shut down another one by mistake, if he tries to rectify the situation in a sudden panic. If it tilts and hits the ground on any decent angle and has a prop strike on the ground, that thing is going to destroy itself pretty quickly, with multiple bits of wooden shrapnel flying everywhere. Whatever, its not something I'd like to be anywhere near, that thing will fly to bits pretty quick. He's definitely on hamburger road though...... 8. No corrosion, it hasn't been there long. Someones lost it after a reserve opening.. Someone at your local DZ will be grateful to get it back. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  9. If he manages to get that thing 10 feet off the ground, and then has an engine failure, he's mince..... Obviously quite skilled at fabrication though. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  10. If you really aren't sure, land on half brakes. You'll prolly fall over, but you should land OK. Never rely on a radio for anything. You should plan your jump assuming you don't have one, and thats how you should have been trained. A working radio should be regarded as a bonus, not as an essential..... 11. As the saying goes: Just because you love one, doesn't mean you have to hate the rest. I'm friends with all my ex girlfriends, although they are not necessarily all friends with each other. Life is too short to waste time with BS. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  12. I've got a couple jumps on a 28 ft lo-po. The owner swore it gave him softer landings, but to me it landed just like any cheapo. Hi A I had at least 75 jumps on a 7tu rag (as required) and 400 + jumps on PC's . We ONLY weighed 120 lbs. We started with PLF's on the rag but eventually started standups on the rags and PC's were no problem. I could check my log book (#1 ) and come up with a specific first stand up # but whats the point. It Was all good. No way could we penertrate a 12mph wind. (One of these days I'll figure out how to reduce the photo size and post some pic's.) I still hate backing up The winter water jump (frozen pond) landing was Never jumped a Lopo. To expensive. R. Often the reserves were mounted so the mod was in the front, as most times you would be backing up if there was any sort of wind. The reserve was basically hooked up backwards. With the mod in the front, you could turn it to get maximum drive from the canopy into the wind, but you were actually facing the way you were going, and could see better and set up for a forward PLF rather than having to do a backwards one.... In still wind conditions the forward drive was prolly about 5 knots, max. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  13. Saved my arse a couple of times with a Lopo. Opened fine, landed OK did a PLF out of habit. Had a 4 line cut mod, which gives enough steering to turn into the wind for landing. Apart from that a good spot landed me in the clear, as it was supposed to do. Have never actually had to use a square reserve even though I've had one packed in my rig since 1988.....and that mainly because I did a lot of demo jumps, into very tight LZ's in the city or near hazards. A good spot is essential, no matter what reserve you have, never trusted GPS spots without backup of the mark 1 eyeball..... Edit: Its never a good plan to expect a standup on any round canopy......main or reserve. Always prepare for a PLF..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  15. The trick with kids and animals is basically to do a hop n pop, with a short freefall time. Under canopy the rate of change in atmospheric pressure is reduced to a level which minimises any discomfort.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  16. Change of underwear for those guys, I bet. Scary shit!!. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  17. You don't really "fly" a round reserve. You are mostly a passenger, at the mercy of the wind, and a good spot by the JM.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  18. i believe retention of jumpers if money or access is not a problem, is directly related to the quality of instructor they deal with during their student days, whether its AFF or SL, or any other. I've always considered the main weakness with AFF is its focus on the freefall skills at the expense of canopy flight and landing skills. You cannot possibly do a good job of both, considering the emphasis necessary for FF. I think the number of "good" canopy related incidents we see today can be attributed in part to progressing via AFF rather than SL. It would be interesting to know the training background of those people injured or worse in good canopy related incidents, to see if their are any indicators, either way... 19. What a crock. Cheapskates, end of story. A chop situation is NOT a panic situation. Very worst thing to be doing. After the event you would have plenty more to think about with a round reserve..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  20. Knowing quite a few deceased pilots through the years, and the shock that comes with it, this is a nasty thing to happen, whatever the circumstances. Sympathy to anyone affected by this tragedy...... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
