  1. Oldies function better on nitrous oxide..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  2. Don't waste your breath. Thats what they want you to do.... Best policy is to just ignore them. Any response just makes them think their ad is effective. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  3. Years ago we had an old guy who had been around for yonks, who had a Phd in Chemistry, and was regarded as rather eccentric. (he used to jump a Volplane) He used to give very full and correct corrections to the pilot, starting miles away from the DZ....."Pilot, 5 degreees right, pilot 15 degrees left"....that sort of thing. One day the Jump pilot kept track of his corrections, and added them all up. They totalled over 180 degrees....we had a few laughs about that.... 4. I think the 60 way by the SOS mob yesterday answers the OP's question pretty comprehensively.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....

  6. "Women are the foundation of mankind"...... Feminist dogma..... I wonder who knows the reply to that quote?. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  7. Downplanes do look scary and dangerous, but that is why they are spectacular, and they are most "effective" when done low down. You can bet your boots that the mentor knew exactly what he was doing here, and was fully in control. So the safety factor would be much higher than it appears to be to you. It is definitely not "out of control and therefore extremely dangerous". It is quite difficult to hold a downplane because of the forces involved. Note how the canopies fly apart on release. It takes a lot of strength to hold them together. And no one wants to hold one into the ground. That would be silly. I do agree that 39 jumps is a little on the low side though, for doing a DP. Deathplanes.....now they are scary....especially if you are the one facing heaven.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  8. Its standard at our DZ to tell everyone about the dangers of props....except we don't cal it a prop. Its called a "mincer".....and people really GET that. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  9. There was your problem right there. The BPA, and some of the guys running the DZ's there are some of the most retarded I've seen, anywhere in the world... Anything and everything you can think of that could be done to make skydiving a negative experience, they practise. You can choose nearly anywhere else in the world to jump, and it'll be better. BPA, and UK skydiving is not typical, at all. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  10. No probs...... I doubt if there are many instructors anywhere who would act the Sgt Major with students. That approach is prolly employed a bit more on 50 - 200 jump level jumpers. IMO thats when they are feeling really invincible and will try all sorts of stupid stuff. Once they get past that level they normally calm down a little and really start to think about what they are doing. But not always.... 12. Good one. I wonder if the tandem rider had a picture in their head of their own grandparents, and wondering what all these oldies were made of.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  13. Or maybe a soap....like that one "The Young and the Useless", or qhatever its called..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  14. A very good news story.....I really hope the media pick up on it. Its an inspiration to all the oldies out there who think life stops at 60, and a lesson for all the punks who think older people are taking up too much space on the planet. The young generation who lived thru the 50's and 60's continues to impress. Yeehaaaaaarrr!!. My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  15. The degree of stupid prolly depends on the experience of his mentor..... But "unwise" certainly fits in somewhere.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  16. Booze. The alcohol drinkers will make you rich.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  17. It was a good downplane, but I do think 39th jump is a bit early to be doing one, although his mentor obiviously(hopefully) had a bit of CRW experience. Like any discipline, CRW introduces a lot of new variables, both in equipment and procedures, as well as the ability to stay cool under sometimes extreme stress, so this was probably not the best example to be setting for a low time jumper, and other low time jumpers watching....pushing the envelope is not a practise they should take on board as something that is OK. His screams showed he was fully amping out at that point, had he ended up a tad lower and downwind it might not have been so good. Having said that, it was prolly a one off, and he will now start with slower steps until he learns what he needs to know. He certainly knows what ground rush is now!. 18. Hey, we've ALL done dumb things. And if we're still around we got away with it. Bad experience still goes in the experience box.... Surviving it, and learning the lesson is the key. Some people do neither..... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  19. Skydive rigs do evolve, but sometimes there is a lag between a discipline catching on, and rigs being built to cater for that. Sitflying/head down is relatively recent, and of course rigs have evolved to cater for that, There are still plenty of older rigs around which are still quite servicable, and suitable if used in the manner they were designed for. Older rigs were perfectly fine for the mostly bellyflying skydiving community, and could handle short periods of time in a back to earth/head down position, however they weren't designed for sustained head down flight for long periods of time. Your student equipment is quite a lot different from the stuff that everyone jumped back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Evolution is a continuous process, no doubt in 10 years time the gear we jump today will look "old hat" My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  20. Yeah, but you are automatically pigeonholing him as someone who only has one approach, which is "different to yours",. He clearly has a variety of approaches, and uses the Sgt Major approach only as a last resort....as do most of us..., My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  21. Cool...Well done you fossils..........but where did they hide all the zimmer frames?... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  22. Careful Richard, there are some sensitive souls out there who just know that skydiving isn't really like that....is it???. You might upset them..... And the bulletproof ones.....don't forget them. It doesn't apply to them, because they just have the most amazing mad skillz.... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
  23. Neither am I. I started this thread as a not so serious pisstake, in response to the names we were called on the velo thread.... I couldn't have successfully trained the thousands of first jumpers I have without knowing how to do it properly. My degree is in Education, and I know a bit about effective instructional methods and how people absorb information. There are plenty of ways to skin a cat though..... 24. To add: I'd be very interested to learn how this approach to investigations compares to other countries... My computer beat me at chess, It was no match for me at kickboxing....
