My Era...What do you remember that was so COOL from our era?
chuckbrown replied to RkyMtnHigh's topic in The Bonfire
...and his teeny lil mandolin? Aagghhh. I delivered room service to him when I was in college. Creepy dude. -
Here's an easy one. Regular hamburger, american cheese, salt & pepper to taste. When you're ready to eat it, put on some Major Grey's Mango Chutney. Yummy!!

FALLING OUT: PARACHUTING & 9/11
chuckbrown replied to AndrewStaich's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
Maytown Sport Parachute Club in, you guessed it, Maytown, Pennsylvania was closed down for about a week after 9/11 because of its proximity to the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant. -
I'm not sure how the civil justice system works in Colorado, but in most states it's relatively easy to file a claim in small claims court where you can get your money & costs back. You can probably even file in your local district, since that's where part of the transaction occurred. If the guy's a DZO, he probably has some assets to execute against.

For a C182 with a "normal" engine (man, would I love a 330hp), you should count on just under 2 loads (four jumpers) per flying hour to 10,000. Figure around 14 gals. per hour. That's my experience with a small DZ in Pennsylvania. Taking a C182 above 10,000 is not very fuel efficient.

Not me. I'd regret the accident and be very, very upset that it ended my jumping career. My biggest regret in this sport is having started jumping at 32 instead of 18. BTW, I have suffered a serious injury requiring surgical repair because of skydiving. Fortunately, it wasn't permanently crippling.

Racial segregation was a very ugly part of our history. MLK should be honored for his efforts to rid our nation of this practice. I have a lot of disagreements with the modern civil rights movement, but I can't fault the efforts of those who fought state-sponsored, legalized racial segregation.

What do you call a skydiving lawyer? Skeet.

Sometimes, REVENGE is sweet, and restores faith in the system...

Iraqi Police "Accidently" Released al-Zarqawi
chuckbrown replied to tbrown's topic in Speakers Corner
My first reaction was if they didn't know that it was Zarqawi when he was originally detained, how do they know now that it was actually him? I haven't heard Zarqawi say that he was caught and released. You'd think he would have said something about stupid infidels -
Unless I'm being particularly dense about your question, those are the latitude and longitude coordinates. 52-40-42n/30-16-19e looks like its in Russia. http://www.fourmilab.ch/cgi-bin/uncgi/Earth?imgsize=320&opt=-l&lat=52.7111&ns=North&lon=329.728&ew=West&alt=31421&img=learth.evif

While I'm not Lawrocket, I did sleep at a Holiday Inn during law school. The problem with the Patriot Act's new provisions will be determining Congress' intent with the phrase "intent to do harm." Does it mean intent to damage the object being photographed? Does it mean intent to commit an illegal act on the object being photographed? This law will be used in whatever way a skilled prosecutor can convince a judge. Just remember that the RICO statute was originally passed to combat the Mafia; it ended up being applied to business executives (some justifiably so, and so not) because the plain language of the law was able to be read in an expansive manner, even if it was far outside the original intent of Congress. Best not to let anybody know what you're doing.

No it won't. If you have to use your reserve, you will be so glad to get rid of your main and have a good canopy over your head.

More "great" skydiving publicity on cnn.com
chuckbrown replied to Spatula's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I noticed it on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution website, and apparently it was on Good Morning America. There's a thread in the Bonfire detailing how this story is "not accurate." -
Sorry, Professor, but your original post was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG. You said Germany and Italy declared war on the US on Dec. 12. I corrected you that the US declared war on Germany on Dec. 11. In fact, Roosevelt's speech to Congress requesting a declaration of war (which you just cited) is evidence that you were WRONG.
-
Actually the US declared war on Germany first, on December 11.

can anyone point me to a history of Saddam Hussein?
chuckbrown replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
IIRC, Saddam was not "created" by the US. He rose to power by killing his political rivals without any assistance from the US. The notion that the US "created" Saddam probably comes from the fact that the US provided support to him during the Iran-Iraq War 1980-1988. At the time any enemy of Iran was our friend. Of course he repaid us by putting a missile into the USS Stark, killing some 40 sailors. One could also say that the US "created" Saddam again in 1990 by our inept diplomatic handling of his interest in Kuwait. He basically told us he would be invading, and when we didn't say anything to dissuade him, he did invade. -
I jump at a small DZ about 15 miles from Harrisburg International Airport (Pennsylvania). Our CRW loads are generally never larger than 4 ways. Harrisburg routinely picks us up on radar. For free fallers its probably a different story.

Yeah, First one broke, the compass and altimeter both completely quit working. Thought it to be an anomaly so I took it back. The compass was off 120 degrees and couldn't be recalibrated by anyone, even the "techs" at the store where it was purchased. Even with readjustment of the altimeter for changing barometric pressure, the altimeter was almost always wrong shortly after adjustment. The second one broke as well in similar ways but to different magnitudes. I took it back and got a Suunto, which is great (as it can be). I think you get what you pay for with some of these trick electronic devices and they are only marginally reliable in my experience. Due to my negative experience, I recommend against High Gear to anyone, I wouldn't trust one. If they quit working for no reason (no abuse, no extreme condition exposure at all, they were almost brand new), what can really be said about their real-time accuracy and reliability? Just my opinion. FWIW, I've had excellent results with High Gear Summit & Axis watches. I use it exclusively for jumping. The only negative is you'll need to find a jeweler to replace the battery when it fails.

Hmmm. Interesting perspective. Thanks. Why don't you just delete the entire thread? It's kind of superfluous without the link, now isn't it?

Thanks. She turns 2 in early January, so I guess I need to get it done soon.

I recently was given a young pit bull. I want to get her spayed, and went to the internet to find out when dogs come into heat, so I have an idea when I need to get her spayed, i.e., before she next comes into heat. EDIT BY REMSTER: Just because you find something discusting doesnt mean you have to share it with the rest of the world.

Good show, ole chap!!! Spot on!!! I wish I'd thought of that one.

Just like General Cornwallis at Yorktown.
