Hey Perky! We had WINDS last Sunday! Did a hop n' pop with the DZO and a couple others. Winds at 3500 were at 29kts. (WX Brief after the jump is where we got the numbers- take them as you will.) Didn't let up until around 1100ft. Okay, need to jump (dumb thinking with newbies wanting to go) . DZO let one of our newbies on the load, and, no he didn't land on. Winds at 10,500 were so strong that a full cut in the 182 would have given us a negative ground speed. I opened at 3500 and thought that Oshkosh (about 8 or so miles away) would be a great place to go. A little fancy inputs to the front risers and I actually held my ground (loaded 1.5;1). The same newbie landed about a quarter mile off again. He got back and started to set up another load! I told him I wasn't going back up in those conditions three times before he quit asking. He was told by at least three of us he shouldn't jump, but he got a load together anyway. Yes, not only did he not land on, but just about pounded himself into the ground doing a VERY low turn. I personally take winds aloft and on the ground into the equation.Over 20 on the ground, no way. It just floors me that when the higher experienced jumpers are saying "NO" why don't the newbies get it and grab a beer instead? Experience will teach them, just hope injury isn't added in there! What size main are you used to? (Doesn't say in his info) 45minutes? You should owe for the extra time. But the not looking part, I agree the bigger the DZ the harder it would be. However, even at our small DZ, things get busy, and we lose track of people for hours at times. Grow up and take care of yourself, but be sure to let the people at the DZ in on your concerns. Just don't burn your ties unless you feel you want to find another DZ. Skydivers are still the best group of people I hang around with. Don't tell me I can't! I already know that! I'm going to venture a guess that it is different with each new student and with each person's coaching skills as to how you go about balling up and recovering. I don't even have to think about recovery (in terms of thinking "sit" if I mess up) anymore, it's natural just as arching in RW. I was in the situation that I didn't know what the guy that was "coaching" him told him. He went into a ball and never tried to recover because he was told that if he feels like he is starting to spin, the ball will stop that. I found out he had talked with this guy a week earlier, only after the jump. Another lesson learned, new guys won't always give you the whole story. He and I did a lot of ground work, and he's on his way to a pretty decent sit. Not group material yet, but it's a start. Don't tell me I can't! I already know that! Haven't you seen my x-rays?

Agreed. I didn't let in we were the only two in the air at all, and I left first to stay at or below his altitude. Big tid-bit to leave out. If you're jumping with many others in the same pass, I don't believe that's the time to be learning free flying. Do it when it's not so busy in the air. And like I said, I agree that corking is not the thing to do if others are in the air with you. Don't tell me I can't! I already know that! Haven't you seen my x-rays?

I have a sit down to the point I feel good about moving where I need to when needed. I jumped watching a new guy from a distance who was told to "go into a ball" if he feels he'll cork. He was all over and never recovered for many reasons I think most can imagine from their own learning jumps. I think at first you're better off corking and flailing so you can get more of a feel of what the relative wind is doing to your body. I'm a youngster at all this myself, but I found flailing was easier then going into a ball and then trying to get back to a sit. Maybe I'm an odd-ball (of course I am, but..) but that's my 2 cents.
