Flying with your rig as a "tote"
dthames replied to bbrodes's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A lot of these smaller regional jets will allow two carry on items but the larger ones they want to check at the gate and return it to you as you exit the plane. Be prepared to give one up so they can put it in the cargo hold during the flight. You might get to keep both with you if the flight is not very full. Jim, also note that (number of jumps in past 30 days)/D is some type of happy factor number as well. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!”

My basic rule is to not pass on any nice Saturday, so that I keep the D factor as low as possible. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!”

When it comes to the way others treat me, I have noticed that it is easy for me to get my expectations a bit too high. If I lower my expectations a bit, others seem to do better. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!”

need advice for flysight set up for wingsuit flights
dthames replied to float's topic in Wing Suit Flying
That's a great idea. The wiki gets added to once in a while, but I'm not really sure what's the best way to add something like this without the wiki becoming a disorganized mess. Any thoughts? Michael Maybe just a short description and a link back to the thread. One row per thread, that was worth referencing. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -
need advice for flysight set up for wingsuit flights
dthames replied to float's topic in Wing Suit Flying
One of my favorite tricks (for Flysight setup) is to set it in Horz mode and drive around in a car, listening to it. It is a lot easier to make setting changes and to test them on the ground than doing it between jumps. After I get mine the way I want it, I switch back to Vert speed and I am ready to go jump it. I do scale down the speed ranges to avoid unwanted attention while drive testing it. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -

Horz speed and Glide Ratio are both influenced a lot by the wind that you are flying in. Vert speed is the most useful for me. http://flysight.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Configuring_FlySight might help, as well. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -

AFF training options during Winter months
dthames replied to jigneshsoni's topic in Safety and Training
I was not able to complete AFF in a few days. I did just come from 11 days at Zhills. You can camp on site or rent a trailer on site. We were in short sleeves and shorts by 10 almost every morning. I did some AFF jumps there. It is one of many good DZs to train at. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -
At Zhills over New Years we did several jumps where a 3 person wedge or a 4 person diamond moved inside a larger formation as a single element. Those jumps were challenging and a lot of fun. We tried to form up the smaller groups outside the main formation and also do staged breakoffs. Good practice for big way formation. not recognizing skydivers I've met before/jumped with
dthames replied to chemist's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was talking to an instructor at a boogie, while he was also talking to another instructor about a specific student. Neither could remember the student's name and the student was approaching us. Whispered to me, Please introduce yourself to this student so I can get the name. Awkward! 3 seconds to think if a smooth way to jump in as the student clearly was headed to talk to the instructor. Me, "Hey, didn't I see you here yesterday's, I'm Dan"......... I often just ask. Yes.....I thought we had. No......I must have you confused with someone else but you look familar. We did a couple of 16 way dynamic formation jumps to close out the day yesterday (Zhills). Waiting for the fog to clear this morning. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -
How do you find your cut away canopy
dthames replied to Safelandings's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I normally fly with a Flysight GPS unit. It has been easy to identify the cut away point with the GPS data. From that point the free bag and then the main will land downwind along a fairly straight line if the winds are not all over the place. If you know the cutaway point and you can find the main or the freebag, you will have a good guess where to look for the other. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -

dthames replied to Safelandings's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
In addition to what TK said, if you land before your main does, and if you have a phone with GPS location on it, you can drop a Pin where you landed, and get a line on where the main went down. If you are out on the open and can walk directly toward where you saw it go down, you can walk 100 meters or so and drop another pin. You can later use these two locations to draw a line on GoogleEarth. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -
If you note there is an audio folder of the Flysight with the files for the spoken words. You could make your own voice files if you want to. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!”

You'll need to configure it first. By default the beta firmware will only produce tones. Configuration information is here: http://flysight.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Configuring_FlySight#Speech_Settings Also, you can test the speech on the ground by changing "V_Thresh" in the configuration file to 0 instead of 1000. This will make it so the FlySight always produces tones--not just when you're in freefall. If you make this change and then turn the FlySight on, you should immediately hear tones and speech. You'll want to change the setting back to 1000 before your next jump, or it will be a long climb to altitude. Michael One thing that has proven useful in setup is to set for Horz mode, lower speed range and threshold, and then drive around in the car checking it out. Get it all figured out, get accustom to understanding what you are hearing, change to the mode and ranges you want to fly with AND then go fly it. Recently I had a cutaway and I just went for the one handle, first, because that is what I wanted.....to get away from the main that was not my friend. I knew the RSL was there and I knew the reserve handle was also there. I am sure my behavior would have been the same without an RSL. How to desensitize to the inital "drop"
dthames replied to DrDom's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I did not have to redo any of the levels. Once I'm out of the plane I'm surprisingly calm to the point I notice altitude, cues, and even the foliage and clouds. I find it rather relaxing. I learned I can't track for crap. Anyhow, all my exits were poised 1-4 and 5-6 were poised since I had never jumped the Cessna (all were twotter jumps). Its not so much freefall at terminal, its that odd transition time that is hanging me up. The 9.8m/2^2 that accelerates me downward from the door. I understand it, but it feels so weird I can't get over it. I feel the sky calls, I'm going to go back... its just a matter of figuring out WHY this part feels so odd for me. What do you mean by "unstable exit"? All my exits are unstable ;) I de-arch like a boss. Fortunately I am good at rolls and flips so I can re-orient pretty quick. I can remember a time as a young adult that I found a bluff (over water) that was high enough that I really got to feel the acceleration of falling. I thought it was just so cool, that feeling. Embrace it. Instructor quote, “What's weird is that you're older than my dad!” -
How to desensitize to the inital "drop"

Solo exits from the C-182 are nice once you know how to do it. Hanging or jumping off the step to the right take the wheel out of the picture and you to really present into the wind very well....once you know how to do it. I hope you get back in the game.
