fundgh 0 #1 July 2, 2003 I am looking to get a gear bag that will allow me to carry my rig on an airplane easily. Any body have any ideas on what is a good bag, and where I can order/buy it?...FUN FOR ALL!

Albatross 0 #6 July 2, 2003 I have found that it is easier to carry rigs onto planes if you use lugage instead of gear bags. THe lugage will not hold as much but will fit in the overhead and or be hard to protect your babyChris
andy2 0 #7 July 2, 2003 go to walmart and find a bag. I promise it will be cheaper than buying something within the skydiving industry. But you might not look as cool, thats a factor. --------------------------------------------- let my inspiration flow, in token rhyme suggesting rhythm... councilman24 37 #8 July 3, 2003 You don't list your canopy sizes but if it fits in standard carry on luggage that the best bet. Mine fits in a standard rolling carry on. That the best bet. bch7773 0 #9 July 3, 2003 I actually went to walmart and couldn't find one I liked. But try a military surplus store... they have both army duffel bags, and really cheap, but strong normal duffle bags. MB 3528, RB 1182

I've been to hell & back with my SQ1 gear bag for almost 4 seasons now. It still looks brand new and there isn't so much as a bad stitch anywhere on it.Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™
fundgh 0 #12 July 3, 2003 I do look to support the industry as much as possible, because I one day hope to be a part of it. Although I am a DIY guy: made my own freefly suit and was planning to build myself a killer gearbag, but the trip is too soon. Besides, I want something I can throw on my back....FUN FOR ALL! skybytch 273 #13 July 3, 2003 QuoteBesides, I want something I can throw on my back. I've travelled with my rig in a gear bag; even checked it as luggage without a problem. It fits everything except my jumpsuits (no gear bag will carry four jumpsuits and a rig...). But, that was a year ago... with all the hassles with TSA now, I think I'd be more comfortable with my rig in a hard sided suitcase if I was flying commercial with it. Can't throw one of those your back though.
Remster 30 #14 July 3, 2003 No offence Lisa, but gear bags are MY pet peeves when it comes to gear. They are really really overpriced when you compare them with what I would call casual travel backpacks. I bough a Camp Trail 70 L bag with hide-away shoulder straps, and I still use it after 11 years. I think I paid something like $55 (and thats funny canadian $s too...). Edit: actually, 9 years.... sorry for the initial exageration.Remster
skybytch 273 #15 July 3, 2003 QuoteNo offence Lisa, but gear bags are MY pet peeves when it comes to gear. They are really really overpriced when you compare them with what I would call casual travel backpacks. None taken. Casual travel backpacks are produced in much higher quantities than are skydiving specific gear bags - therefore more time/research (money) can be put into design (resulting in a more comfortable bag to carry) and production costs are lower (which translates into a lower retail price). Even if some backpack designer started jumping and designed a super-comfy gear bag, as long as it's built by skydivers in the US it's gonna be more expensive than what you can get at the local sporting goods store. And I'm not so sure that a quality non-skydiving specific bag is much cheaper than a gear bag from a major dealer. Have you priced quality outdoor equipment lately? Remster 30 #17 July 3, 2003 QuoteHave you priced quality outdoor equipment lately? All the time! lol... have I mentioned MEC lately? To me, a gear bag isnt a skydive item. Its a bag. And I would never buy a quality outdoor backpack for that purpose either: too expensive as its designed and made to to be worn while hiking. I guess I'm just a cheap bastard.....Remster
bch7773 0 #18 July 4, 2003 I also want to support the skydiving industry, but I'm not gonna pay three times as much. I mean, when a quality duffel bag costs me $25, and a special skydiving duffel bag costs me around $90, well, I'm gonna support the military surplus store. of course, I am also a pennyless college skydiver, aka cheap bastard MB 3528, RB 1182
fundgh 0 #19 July 9, 2003 I received my gear bag from Square 1 last night.... I really dig it. I have carried my rig in a duffle; but the fit is akward, they don't have super bitchin', easy to connect back pack straps (the best way to carry that amount of weight), and the extra big outside pocket for all of the packing accessories and jumpsuit rocks. Not to mention the material is heavy duty with good zippers. Money well spent, perfect for a carry on!...FUN FOR ALL!
CrazyIvan 0 #20 July 9, 2003 Which one is it? the HOT POCKETS or DELUXE?, size?__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you.
fundgh 0 #21 July 10, 2003 It is the medium hot pockets. I have a mirage with a 150 in it and it fits easily. I bet I could put my helmet in with the rig! The bag is cool. It does not have any extra special features, just the basics. I don't feel a bit guilty about spending a hundred bucks on it!...FUN FOR ALL!
CrazyIvan 0 #22 July 10, 2003 Thanks for the info, I was eyeballing those but wasn't sure, I personally like the DeLuxe design, but if the Hot Pockets is that roomy I'll change my mind.__________________________________________ Blue Skies and May the Force be with you. kevin922 0 #23 July 10, 2003 I just picked up my Bird-Man gearl bag made by aero tech products it has a day pack that zips of which is neat.. turns into a mini-me backpack basically.. the whole rig bag is one big back pack as well.. appears to be very well made, I can fit my rig with a birdman suit attached plus stuff a 2nd (and I think 3rd suit) in the main container.. put my goggles, alti, books, and everything else in the mini-bag and then there is a "magazine pocket" which is the whole section that rests on your back when wearing the large bag. noice. (plus it looks snazzy)
fundgh 0 #24 July 10, 2003 I would bet that the deluxe bag is the same with some other pockets or features. I don't think that size will be an issue with either bag....FUN FOR ALL!
