skymedic 0 #1 August 30, 2005 How do they help to crunch video faster? I mean I understand they make it all run faster. but HOW does it do it? or generalized how does it do it faster than my iMac G5? does one processor get dedicated to just digitizing or do they both get fired up to do it simultaniously? and will the new dual core intel machines that are coming next year do the same thing but with just one..err..sorta one processor? MB38 0 #2 August 30, 2005 I wouldn't expect the Pro line machines [Power Mac line] to go Intel until 2007. It has not been announced whether or not they will be dual core. I work for Apple. A dual 2.3 will crunch video about twice as fast as a single 2.0 iMac. Add some RAM and you're set. I'm on a dual 2.7 with a paltry 3 gigs of RAM. Renders that used to take upwards of 18 hours on my single 867 G4 from 5 years ago take less than 20 minutes on this machine. For the basics that most people do... dissolves and titles... the render will be inside of 3-4 seconds for a 15 minute video. If you have any iMac G5, stick with it for now. If it's the 1.8 or 2.0, you're set. Put 2 gigs of RAM in there [but don't buy it from Apple... we overcharge about 400%] and call it a day.I really don't know what I'm talking about. MB38 0 #8 August 31, 2005 I have two very different jobs. One is in retail [yeah, bottom of the food chain] and the other I'm not able to comment on [and that's not me just saying I have a higher position to make it seem like I'm higher up than a retail employee... I just can't comment].I really don't know what I'm talking about.
deaffreeflyer 0 #9 September 1, 2005 Do you think iMac G5 2.0Ghz 20" with 2GB Ram would be fast enough for video editting (FCP HD)? What about Motion? I am considering to order one in late Jan 2006 or should I save up for a PowerMac Dual-Processors? Stu
freeflydrew 0 #10 September 1, 2005 Save up for the powermac... the bigger advantage is that you can add internal hard drives with power mac... plus you can really bump up the ram. http://www.macsales.com. In addition, the powermac supports extending the desktop when 2 monitors are attached, and has a firewire800 port on the back. You're comparing the 2 high end machines from 2 totally different lines of computers. The iMac is off of the Consumer line and the PowerMac is off of the Prosumer line. The iMac G5 is a nice machine, but the PowerMac is simply the better machine.
skymedic 0 #11 September 1, 2005 Quote In addition, the powermac supports extending the desktop when 2 monitors are attached I SOOOOOO wish i could add another monitor to my iMac to expand the desk top...I say that with my safari window at more than comfortable size and having iChat off to one side and my iTunes mini player with more than enough room on the other side. I never realized the beauty of the wide screen effect on stuff till we got the iMac G5. Marc otherwise known as Mr.Fallinwoman....

I am considering to order one in late Jan 2006 or should I save up for a PowerMac Dual-Processors? Stu It will be fast enough, but it's worth saving up. You can add an external monitor to the iMac and have it span rather than mirror. I can't tell you how, but it involves a firmware reflash and a warranty voiding. It's possible though. Probably not worth the risk. Go by an Apple Store or another reseller and give it a shot. Fire up FCP and play with some of the HD footage that's on the computer. You'll see how it handles it. Be sure to see how much RAM the system has. What is acceptable speed-wise for me may not be acceptable for you. It's a personal decision.I really don't know what I'm talking about. MB38 0 #14 September 8, 2005 www.apple.com is where you'll find what you want to know. It's the Motorola ROKR phone with an iTunes client built in. It holds 100 songs. It's basically an iPod shuffle fused with a cell phone... not much interesting going on here. The iPod nano [the mini's replacement] sure is cool though.I really don't know what I'm talking about. jsnor 0 #16 November 24, 2005 I have owned a dual 2.0 PowerMac for a year. It has 2.5 gigs of ram. Previously I owned PC's. Love My G5. Would never go back to a PC for video work. My Mac rarely has any problems. It flys when doing video work. Go for it!
