The Biggest Cause of Global Warming is Cow Farts (Methane Gas). The smelly candles are the second Biggest.

This deadly combination will soon completely destroy the earth and all life as we know it when one day the concentration of methane gas is ignited by the Candles.

We must all do our part. My solution is to eat more Steak thus cutting down on the number of Cows out there Farting (Cause we all know there is no way women are going to give up the candles!!).

Burning fuel to produce fertiliser to grow feed, to produce meat and to transport it - and clearing vegetation for grazing - produces 9 per cent of all emissions of carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas. And their wind and manure emit more than one third of emissions of another, methane, which warms the world 20 times faster than carbon dioxide.

Livestock also produces more than 100 other polluting gases, including more than two-thirds of the world's emissions of ammonia, one of the main causes of acid rain.

Ranching, the report adds, is "the major driver of deforestation" worldwide, and overgrazing is turning a fifth of all pastures and ranges into desert.Cows also soak up vast amounts of water: it takes a staggering 990 litres of water to produce one litre of milk.

Wastes from feedlots and fertilisers used to grow their feed overnourish water, causing weeds to choke all other life. And the pesticides, antibiotics and hormones used to treat them get into drinking water and endanger human health.

The pollution washes down to the sea, killing coral reefs and creating "dead zones" devoid of life. One is up to 21,000sqkm, in the Gulf of Mexico, where much of the waste from US beef production is carried down the Mississippi.

Good point, a quick search reveals that cattle populations in the US today are roughly the same as the Bison population in the early 1800's. But the bison heards were spread out, and today that's not the case.

Despite the thread title, my personal concerns with factory farming are not so much related to GW. I'm more concerned with the pollution and suffering caused by raising the various farm animals in dense groups, and the lack of good progress mitigating the situation. Here's an honest take on the situation:

I agree with you on the idea of raising our meat producing animals in 'factories'. With the amount of urban sprawl and the selling-off of family farms and ranches, this is what we are faced with in the not too distant future. Some of it is already here. We're just simply, running out of range land.

The biggest problem with cattle is they are being grown on areas that have been deforrested wolrdwide... Brazil comes to mind. Overall there are far more bovine worldwide now than there ever have been Think of the industry in Australia etc.

I dont think there were many cattle in Hawaii or Florida before the european settlers brought them... now there are HUGE herds in both places because it takes very little space to feed one head there as opposed to a place like west Texas or Eastern Montana where it takes 100 acres plus to support one animal.

Nah - it's the bloody 'plug it in' air fresheners my Mrs insists every plug in the house must have. I mentioned once how much I hate the fuckers to then end up being sprayed with 'Febreeze' for fucks sake.
