what now....nice work/no risk...cool work/big risks..?

Recommended Posts

I have a nice job at a company that makes computergames. I did the animations for the game Age of Wonders: Shadowmagic www.ageofwonders.com and loved doing so.
I have a fulltime contract, and it pays well.

Although computergames are fun, my dream is animation for film. Doing the stuff that www.pixar.com does.

Yesterday I got an exciting phonecall/question...
I now have the chance to quit my job, and get a 1 year contract to work on the visual effects (animation) for a big dutch movie. But that would mean, giving up my current solid job/pay, with a chance that I could become un-employed when that year of work is over.
The new job will pay better, and if I do an INCREDIBLE job on the project...they will maybe hire me for their next 3 projects and I'd definately be THE DUDE...but still...it would suck if I was without work next year....argg....what to do ..:)

I have to decide within one or two weeks...

Take the chance if that is what you want to do. In life you get 3-5 chances to make shit happen.

Run with this and do not look back, make sure you are 90% sure this is what you want to do.

You can always get another contract. The market is pickin up. Read sept. Business 2.0

make 6 times the amount I do now for a 1 year contract or play it safe

Wouldn't making 6 times more in one year allow you 5 years to find a new job with enough cash in the pocket :)As Ren Hoek would say..."Do it man!"

My new job wouldn't pay that much more..it would mostly be for the cool work. The distance is also a big issue (now I travel 10 minutes to work every day by bike, new job would be + 1 hour by train to and from work every day)

Hey Jarno,

Sounds NOICE!

Whether to take it on or not... hard to say.. could also depend on your personal situation (mortgage to pay, expensive addictions, etc..)..

What movie are they asking you to take part in? (or is that highly classified information? )

Good luck making your decision!

Well, this is a little quote that I ran across,

There's as much risk in doing nothing as in doing something.
- Trammell Crow

OR -

The best way to predict the future is to create it.
- Peter Drucker

Hope this helps.

one more...

We must walk consciously only part way toward our goal, and then leap in the dark to our success.

Thats a great big fat "Go for it"

To get ahead you have to take calculated risks. Balance the risk vs the potential gain.

Id say that since you will get good $$$, more experience to add to your resume, and ITS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO
then go for it.
The risk is low if you conserve your money while woking there. The potential gain is monstrous.

Make me your beneficiary. I promise to spend it on expensive booze and cheap women to honor your memory.

I think my son will probably have that covered. I'm making him wait until he is 25 before he can touch any of the money though. I think that's about when I started to get SOME sense. :D
