A recent post re difficulties with IE made me realise I haven't seen much evangilising about Firefox here.

Its more secure, free (as in speech and beer) and what all the cool kids are using. :)
Try it today, only a 5 Mb download from www.mozilla.com

While you're at it check out Thunderbird from the same site, Its a good alternative to Outlook.

I switched to Firefox about a year ago and have had nothing but great experienes with it. Its a great step in the right direction away from the problems IE has. Of course its not perfect, but its a LOT better then IE. That and to run tabs in IE you have to run a different browser using the IE engine...tabs are good mm'k?

I love the extensions and themes you can install, just get it how you like. Also for websites that are coded specificaly for IE you can install an extension that runs an IE in a seperate tab (if you change the UA string).

Ditto. Love it.

Didn't know about that IE plug-in, though. Might have to look into that. It always pisses me off when web sites have IE-only content. >:(

It's ok...I use it for most stuff at home. It sucks for this site. A bunch of features don't work. And it has strange beheavior related to where cursor focus is. Drives me nuts when I'm typing in my google search bar and Firefox decides to randomly put focus somewhere else. And none of the websites for my online banking or credit cards support it. Then there's the hassle with finding the right plug ins.

But other than that...it's great. :P

??? there are features on this site that dont work in Firefox? (I've never seen it in IE so I can't tell what is missing).

Can't really speak for the cursor focus thing as I haven't seen any problems that way.

Site renders and works perfectly (except for whatever missing functionality you're referring to, that I obviously dont miss).

Plugins? Obviously I'm missing a great deal of the intarweb as I currently have 0 plugins installed except a default install of flash.

TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

The only thing missing is the "link this post" clicky on the post. Kinda annoying that its not there, but not too big of a deal. Not enough of a big deal to go back to the memory dumping security trashed IE.

Weird, I've never had issues with this site or the focus thing.

As for the sites not working thats down to people not coding to standards.

Remember, MS are like the Underpant Gnomes but they have 4 steps and know what they all are. Embrace, extend, break, profit!

Btw I do use some MS products and make my living supporting a lot of them, I just dont believe that they are always the best solution to the problem.

u mean like the 'in reply to' link?

Nope, slightly different. Crank up IE for a sec and see what I'm talking about...then quickly close IE before you somehow get affected by Spyware.

Me either, cause I can't figure out how to load them for Firefox. Not that I tried hard, I just usually launch IE when I encounter a site that needs them.

Funny you mention that, I had to go to a vendors website yesterday and launched IE only to discover that the home page was set to some place I've never visited and I had some bookmarks I'd not set.

..................oh.

Thats crap.

Are you trying to install one of those weird porn viewer thingys? Most of the larger vendors include the Firefox install option nowadays.

I'm gonna take a wild stab at "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\plugins" as being the place to put plugins.

:P

Hey look! under all this prettiness there's a filesystem!!

But where do I find the plug ins? There are a few different news sites I go to that I can't view video on, it says "unknown plugin missing". How am I supposed to know what the unknown plugin is? Yeah, I'm partially lazy and could probably figure it out but it's easier to just click the little blue e.

Dreamweavers gotten better at supporting the other standards. There was a point in recent history where every friggin page was b0rked unless you used IE.

People are smartening up. In general it's only the annoying morons with vanity pages that provide incompatible webpages nowadays. Change your useragent and most 'incompatible' sites render without a hiccup.

I pass them by...it seems very MS arrogant to require IE to view the page...when it's a business I get a chuckle because they just lost 1 more customer. Not a big deal in the grand scheme of things but a blow for the little guy!

LOL

Urm. Ok. I go to lots of newsites and watch the news and have never had to install a damn thing. Maybe you installed all those weird plugins at a different time in IE?

As far as not having a plugin, FF and IE both tell you which one you need and both provide comparable support as far as finding the correct plugin and automating the download (or not).

Throw out a link and I'll check it out for you, but the main news sites and local tv sites have no issues at all here.

I switched to firefox a while back. My single favorite feature is the "begin finding when you begin typing" feature (tools->options->advanced->accessibility). It searches the current page for whatever text you type in...without having to hit ctrl+F or go through any menu. You just start typing whatever you want to search for. I use it all the time and really miss it when I'm at work where I have to use IE.

Firefox also has tons of great extensions, which I can't do without (they get rid of some built-in annoyances and add new features). Linkification is an extension that turns any non-clicky link into a clicky link automatically. Comes in very handy on this site. There are a few out there to translate the web page you're on. I use that a lot to read threads on french skydiving forums. Image zoom lets you blow up any image on any page through a right-click menu. Perfect for getting a better look at avatars and things like that. I also use one called IEview, which allows you to quickly open the current page in IE if there's something on it that's not working. There are tons of other great extensions. They make all the difference to me.
