Scotty was larger than life. A true legend in his time. He lived louder and on the edge more than anyone I've ever met. His stories were unbelievable (but believable, knowing Carbone). Some of my favourite skydiving memories are from Quincy 1995 and 96 with Scotty as a soundtrack to my memories. - In 1995, I drove up to Quincy from Deland with Scotty & Rickerby. Rickerby in his van, and Scotty in his RV. The two fought like an old married couple, but loved each other to death, best buds until the end I believe. Scotty surfed his pet lizards out the RV window. Only one survived the roadtrip, dying from the shock of all the airtime! We had a funeral and burial by the WFFC showerhouse for his dearly departed pet on arrival. He was so stricken with sadness and couldn't understand why it had died?! - On my first & only Carbone-organized Quincy lingerie jump -- the last visual I had before opening was Scotty dive-tracking with his crazy trail-blazing hat. - Scotty in his cow-suit (always the trendsetter, making the onesie popular!!) was host to the wet t-shirt contest. And then the storm came whipping through. What a night! "Scotty in his element working up the crowd at the 1995 event for the Wet T Shirt Party- "Get out your 5 dollar bills and dollar bills and pass um on up..come on guys!" - then the storm hit" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r04jdLWA4dM. Thankfully, I'm NOT in the video although I was in the contest :P. Scotty had such a raspy voice -- as if he smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day -- and he was often curt, loud and brash as fuck. But boy, was he a kind (often generous) soul with an open and good heart. Good times, great memories. I'm nostalgic in watching all the memorial ash-dive videos from this past Saturday -- he wanted his ashes spread on his birthday. 33 dropzones around the US and many more around the world participated. I'm so grateful to have grown up as a skydiver around that era, meeting the old-timers like Carbone, Rickerby, Dodgin. How about you?

OP: Take the advice regarding safety, legality and resale value to heart. Mr. Rickerby was a local legend when I started jumping up here in '93. I'm sorry I never had the privilege of meeting him in person, but I got to admire several rigs, primarily Racers, enhanced by his creativity. Hi pal, If that was a particular shirt?? No, but the one to be on the lookout for is any old "Rickerby" especially the one with a bunch of Ghouls with toot snorting straws sitting around a hugh mirror with what is obviously cremated human remains and although there is no caption the "Implied" one is,"SKYDIVERS SNORT THEIR DEAD!" Notice that ALL of the work Rickerby did was either on a POP TOP cap or on a pin cover flap. None in the gallery or that I ever saw was on a part of the container that was critical, reserve flaps, main flaps, harness. And none spanned across two peices of fabric. Pop Tops were replaceble in the field. You could probably get away with Pop Tops, pin protector flaps, mud flaps on the front, Leg strap pads. That's about it. Anything else is an alteration and would need FAA approval. And testing data to prove the pigments in the paint didn't do anything to the nylon. A hurdle you'll probably never be able to meet. Even without that, remember you would be trying to get multiple pieces of fabric to line up. All the time. It wouldn't happen and there may very well be wrinkles. So while it might look good once. It may never look right again. Here is the positive suggestion.... Here is what you MIGHT be able to do. Paint on the parts I listed above, but get them from the manufacturer FIRST. Paint them, send them pack for construction. Then you wouldn't have to worry about damage to critical parts. On container flaps, you might be able to paint an OVERLAY piece of material. There have been some special rigs made with odd ball materials, leather, fur, etc. But they were mostly overlaid over normal nylon flaps. So, your painting would be on a piece of fabric that was used to construct a double layer over the normal flap. But you would want to keep your design to something that didn't bridge across flaps. Either separate scences or something else that didn't matter if it lined up. Or be ready to accept no perfect registration both from the construction and from each pack job. Ordering a blank canvass and having at it? Need to forget that idea. BTW I once had a newby customer who bought a navy blue rig in the fall. That winter he took fabric marking pens and turned it black. Not all of the flap and harness.. just the parts you could see. So the outside of the webbing was black, the backside was blue. The flaps were black were you could see them. The guy did such a good job that there were no lines or unevenness. Took me a minute to realize what was wrong with the rig. THAT rig was never in the air again. We're not down on art. And all of the skydivers loved Rickerby's work. But we are down on you ruining (legally) your lifesaving device and making it a wall hanging. It doesn't matter how much you SAY it doesn't hurt the material. I'm old for my age. Rickerby and I 'caught' him, one day. He was absolutely furious at us!!! He did not talk with us for weeks! So, we finally gave him a case of 'Christmas' beer, and asked for forgiveness. He lectured us for 'stealing' his jump, and had us promise to never do it again! But, he still often complained to us about that jump... "More smoke, Frenchy! We cannot find the DZ!!" I remember watching many of his solo exits from the DC-3 at Z-Hills in the early 80's. Funny eccentric man. I think he was a farmer back in Canada. Always kept the fires going. Damn. I haven't been on here in a short while, but when I got to page 4 of this month's SKYDIVING & read the news, well, I was shocked & extremely saddened. I started jumping in late May 1984. Dave & Dawn spent 3 or 4 months (June to late Sept) living/working on the DZ in Lakewood, NJ. That's where I was fortunate enough to first met him/them. I ran into Dave many times over the next 10 years. I'm not sure if he REALLY knew who I was or not, but he was always friendly, fun, & generous. Hell the last time I was on a DZ, last summer, I was wearing a Rickerby T-shirt! BSBD my friend. You may be missed, but you will live on in the hearts of your friends! When the only tool you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.

Thanks for posting this picture, Sal, and thanks even more for the condolences. We both had a great time with you that Christmas while painting the mural at La Juilliana. We're all going to miss him, but I think we should feel lucky to have been there to witness him spreading his "Rickerby Magic". What a beautiful gift he gave us all! Take care -Jennifer Rickerby

I was in San Marcos TX. over the Halloween weekend and saw a little packer chick running around with a pink javelin container with a painted reserve flap,,She didnt know about david we talked about the rig and the artist!! You wake up in a trailer, not quite remebering how you got there and the first thing ya see,, A Rickerby Painting,,, ahh I must be in the right place!!!!!!!! Change of RICKERBY Memorial in ENGLAND! Dear all, Due to an unforeseen circumstance, I regret to inform you that there is going to be a change in date for David's memorial party in England. I'm presently considering the event to take place on Saturday the 6th of December, however, I have not yet been able to make this firm. Please keep an eye on this thread for further notice as to when it will happen. The DeLand event still has not been firmed yet either, but will be taking place sometime after the new year.
