  1. Well the guy, no nice words to insert here, fell through on the hdr-hc1 so i said f it and picked up a different camera, or two. Got a hc90 for $514 and then bought a 20D for $800 If anyone wants a good 300D let me know
  2. Wanna buy it back from me I like the 20D for the FPS, the xt rebel is the same as the 10D, I can get a 10D for $500 but am trying to find a 20D for 850 or so, missed one on fred miranda's a while back by a couple hours...
  3. there are hc90's avilable for just over $500, refurbished, but you can get an additional 2 year warranty for $60. I have a flat top I'll be mounting it on, so it'll fit just right. I'm going to custom make a box for it too. Now I just have to upgrade my digital rebel to a 20D hehe
  4. I can't wait, need a camera by the weekend. Someone dropped my pc100 at the dz last time we jumped and of course never told me. It's totally busted and I have tandem videos this weekend (assuming I can jump even, got hurt pretty bad today) Also I'm leaving for a week skydiving trip in 10 days and can't leave home without a camera!
  5. Ok let me ask the question again as I have a bit more information. If you had the choice of buying the: HC90 HDR-HC1 PC1000 All for the same price, which one would you get? I'd like to purchase one of the 3 tomorrow and have a great deal on them all... There is very little difference in price, and I'm really leaning towards the hc1 for the hdv and that fact that ALL my old pc100 stuff can be used on the hc1 (extra HUGE battery, charger, remote etc) Does the HC1 compare to the pc1000? I saw video of the pc1000 today, it's really really nice. If the hc1 compares to that, I'm golden
  6. Ok I have a side question. I'm editing both linear and non linear, just depends if I'm at my home dz, how much work, or traveling etc at boogies. I burn straight to DVD from the rca port and run the audio into a sound board where i have 2 mp3 players that i run to mix all the sound then master out of the sound board to the audio in (rca) on the dvd burner. I would prefer to use straight firewire, but then I can't edit the audio in, am I doing something wrong or is this just how it is?
  7. hmmmm I'm currently jumping a pc100 that someone dropped at the dz and now I can't use the screen or viewfinder. It still recrods, but no idea if it's zoomed, what mode etc etc etc. Ther vertical position of the camera isn't an issue as then i could use it on my freefly camera as well. No I have never seen the floating iris problem, just read about it, so I have no valid point. I'll be shooting 95% tandem videos with whatever new camera I get, I like the idea of the HD, but I for one don't have an HDTV so it won't really matter to me other than anything right now it going to be better than my pc100. How did you guys deal with the whole cradle issue? wasn't that a pain in the ass?
  8. Well nevermind about the PC1000 This post was VERY helpful http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?do=post_view_flat;post=1620827;page=1;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;mh=25; made me decide right away not to go for the 1000, I need the extra battery life.
  9. If money were not an issue would would be better for skydiving? HDR-HC1 (benefits with the trv style on a flat top, don't have to use cradle) PC330 (awesome picture quality that I just haven't seen anywhere else, though I haven't seen the hc1 yet, though have to use the cradle, so no quick release or keeping it on my helmet PC1000 (great quality but 3CCD flicker problem and cradle issue) Those are my choices, or the 350 but I like the 330 better, which one makes more sense for quality and functionality whise?
  10. I feel this thread should be made for ONLY registered users of 30 days and who have made a post before. All the name calling, fake accounts and unprofessional business practices are really out of control.
  11. I was just going to point that out... The runway looks to be pretty much 35/17 so it would be a north/south jumprun
  12. Here's my opinion in all this. If all the energy that was used to PREVENT the opening of the dropzone or INFORM the public of how horrible skydiving is was used to instead promote safety day, or for that matter a cure for cancer, we'd be in a much better place in the world today. Good night
  13. Wow if that's not a troll I don't know what is! I'd be curious to see the ip logs and see if the poster matches up with one or more of the fake accounts created to stop the DZ from opening. The registrant of the domain lives over 250 miles from Harrisonville, how does that effect that community?
  14. I used to have a list of all the Collegiate clubs and DZ's. I'll try and find it again. The hardest part is forming a collegiate club because the universities don't want to assume liability. We're lucky that we've been along for so long and have only had one fataility that was more than 10 years ago. That I know of it didn't effect us then and hasn't effected us since I've been around. We lost our president 5 years ago at another DZ and had a 2nd jump student not react to a malfunction that was injured pretty bad. Because of the nature of the sport the club's who have contacted me in the past wanting to set up all said the same thing "how do you get your university to sponsor you guys or assume the liability" They don't and we're lucky they don't think they do. A majority of the clubs require an academic advisor whom are generally scared away by the university big dogs. Our old ac advisor used to be our pilot and our current one is a jumper. To be honest though, and this may sound a bit odd, in the eyes of the university we're the least worried about sports club on campus. We fall under recration services and Tim S is whom we report to. He knows we've got our stuff together, we keep copies apon copies and then backups of all our waivers, he knows we're all USPA certified and trained, unless he hears from us, he knows we're doing everything right. He said he's more worried about the paintball and rodeo club than us and so are his bosses, just because they don't have the same type of waivers we do in place. It's touchy and we've been lucky to have the support we have from the university (i.e. never running up our backs). If we were trying to start a new club I'm sure it'd be a different story. If anyone wants any help or ideas or to talk about how we do things or our constitution just let me know. We're very proud of our DZ and the fact that we can license jumpers for way under $1000. In return, we all take part in the day to day activities, I know I spend upwards of 15-20 hours a week with programming, website, secretary, treasurer and what not duties making sure we're run properly and safely. We just grounded a rig because we didn't feel it was safe, could we have still jumped it? Probably, but that's not our concern, student safety is. I frequently put on canopy courses and seminars and try to learn as much as I can about the sport to pass to others. I took up a dealership position to offer products to students at cost to help them out. We're all poor, we're all looking to advance the sport and the only we can do that is to not think of ourselves. I want to be able to come back to KSUPC in 10 years and know I still have a home I helped build in the last 5 years, I want people to still know my name "Yeah, I remember Chris, he was an asshole, or so I've heard, but damn he got shit done around here"
  15. I'm sorry I re-read your post and my post and I misuderstood it and the no no no was meant to be funny not rude. We're very unique in the sense that we don't have to pay the comercial rates when training our students. I think actually we're the only university club that owns and operates our own DZ. I know we're not the oldest club, possibly collegiate, but there are many others whom operate the same way. LSPC in Lincoln and Couch Freaks are 2 examples that come to mind. They own the dz and are a club, cost are low, however there is the comercial overhead aspect of it still
  16. Dude you are SO right on. We're a small club, there's one tandem master and one vidiot (me), but by no means is it a monopoly. We do maybe 100 tandems a year and of course as we all know, not every tandem gets video, so it varies. I started jumpnig video with about 400 jumps, the previous TM was a vidiot and taught me the ropes. We had rules, how close I could be, when I would break off and even I set some as well for my comfort level. Before even doing tandem videos I'd been jumping with a camera on my head for about 200 jumps, and by no means was I "good" at it. It's a learning process. About 200 jumps into the vidiot progression I spent time in the tunnel, getting belly time, transitions etc. I worked exits and got good at chasing on the hill etc. After that I got MORE tunnel time, trained more and when I'm uncurrent (no video within a couple weeks) I'll film a tandem for free just for the training. There's a lot to be said about being a vidiot or working the skydiving business to pay bills. You run into a lot of people at boogies, everyone exits differently, everyone has different rules and you just have to follow them. What scares me are the 200 jump wonders who slap a camera on their heads and want to start chasing tandems out or video them. A) the quality isn't good and you're selling a product for the dropzone, not YOUR product, but for the dropzone. If it's shitty quality then the next guy down the line might hear from them that it's not worth the $85 bucks. B) it's not just about flying video, getting the exit etc. Tandems move, A LOT, and you're a perfect target for that student or an accident. If all of a student the TM pulls, where are you? Where you ready? Were you in the way? Example, 9500 ft TM throws out the drouge and his main comes out. Student dislodged the handled on exit and pulled it out... A newbie leaving late, on top of the grouge, could have been much much worse. So yes, it scares me. I've had a couple people come out to the dz who want to start flying video and tandems. I say I'd rather they fly with me, exit before and stay out of the way to get some time in the air, but it takes a lot of jumping, regardless if you're getting paid or not, you HAVE to stay current. So that's my rant, don't think you can make a fortune in the industry just by smacking a camera on your head. It too a lot of work, dedication and f*ck ups to get to the point I'm at now, and every other camera flyer can tell you the same thing. I for one weight 290-300 out the door, just one of the things I have to overcome and keep myself and the TM safe. Don't think the vidiot at teh DZ telling you you can't jump is cause he wants the money, it's for his and your safety and you can't just jump into the industry either, it doesn't work, you have to sell yourself and be GOOD at it and what your package is.
  17. Do you want a smartass answer or a real answer? My smart ass answer is, I opened the door and jumped out. The real answer is, read my thread above again. I haven't paid for a jump in close to 4 years. I shoot video, SL-I and Coach. Those 2 years were my slow years too. I made enough money to pay for my jumps and pay for my bills while unemployeed (my choice). It was the best 2 freaking years of my life. Now I'm a full time student, still no real job other than part time on campus. I'm telling you, it's all about priorities and how you live. I learned that worry is like a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but never get you anywhere (fav movie), so I just don't worry about what's going on in my life cause at the end of the month, I always tend to have enough to pay bills AND had a good time doing whatever I did
  18. We don't own the airstrip, it's owned by the city, but we're the only ones who use it. In the time of my jumping we owned the rigs and had bought a plane, we paid the plane off 2 years early, before that we rented a plane from a guy. A fellow pilot co-signed the lone to buy our plane, pilot was not involved with the club, just a nice guy whom we share our hanger with. As for the history 30 some od years ago I don't know where the money came from. In the concrete outside the hanger is says KSUPC Skydivers 7-30-1970, 12 years before I was even born. In the 5 years I've been around though we've replaced all 9 of our student rigs, 9 student canopies, paid off the plane, rebuilt the engine, buying 9 new cypres' next month and 9 new reserves end of year. We have extremely low overhead not having to pay staff and I believe our hanger rental is 15 a month and that includes electricity and phone. We also mow the DZ and around the runway to raise some extra money for equipment, but again, all our time is volunteered
  19. I'm 24, have 1000 jumps, am a full time college student living off campus (not with parents) and receive not financial support from the family. Up until end of Jan I was unemployeed for 2 years, in those 2 years I made 400 some odd skydives. I am on my 2nd rig and 3rd canopy, 2nd rig and 3rd canopy were bought new, a birdman suit, flat top with digital cameras, 5 hours in the tunnel and will be making 50 jumps in perris in 2 weeks. I haven't paid for a jump out of my check book for close to 4 years...IT's all about how dedicated you are and where you can cut costs in your life and come up with ways to make money. My advice, get your ratings and shoot some f*cking killer video edit to add: I didn't start jumping till I was 19 and saw a flyer on my campus. I'm not a dz baby and didn't pay my way packing
  20. no no no no you still don't get it. WE own the DZ not the university. The uni gives us $1000 a semester which we spend on advertising etc. We NEVER use that money for equipment or the plane as then it would somehow or could give them control of what we do later down the line. If the university were to drop us like 3rd period french it would have no effect on us what so ever other than we wouldn't get free copies at the copy center which regardless each of us gets 100 copies free a semester, so 2 people would have to chip in to hang flyers, the rest of the money we use to pay for competition airfare, like 50 bucks a person and that's it. In no way shape or form has the university helped us, will ever help us, or funded the creation and operation of our dz, equipment, aircraft or anything else. That's where people are going wrong, they're trying to set up dz's at the uni's expense, that won't happen. A lot of times colleges contact us because of our existence and ask how we do it, we inform them that we're a self sustaining entity that just has the authorization to call ourselves Skydive K-State or Kansas State University Parachute Club, that's about our only association with the uni.
  21. It's built into our jump price and for every tandem or new student we train we make about $60. After their first jump/tandem everything is at cost. We also get the money from club dues, $20 a semester from everyone in the club. We own the plane and all our rigs so we don't have to worry about payments etc. I posted the breakdown in another thread, yesterday, now I just have to find it.
  22. Holly shizzers and I thought we had a big group to travel with...
  23. Plane tickets, rental cars, tunnel and many other reasons that didn't add up to the equation for costs. We're flying out for 150 each, paying 40 for rental cars and gas, staying a week in the house for 90 each, 5 hours of tunnel time, 200-300 jumps etc. In the end, to try and travel with such a huge group we could drive anywhere and camping gear takes up too much room. Perris gave us a good deal on jumps to help us out and one out of the group will be finishing up his student progression while there.
  24. So 11 of us from KSUPC will be in Perris from March 16-23rd. We're calling it our "Not in Kansas Anymore" Spring Break trip. Who all jumps out there and will be around for St. Patty day? Will the Bombshelter be hopping? Also, we need someone to dock ontop of a hybrid (head down hanging below) standing on top. Anyway, can't wait for the trip, the Kansans are INVADING!
