Meaning that his message was entirely anti everything but nuke. As I said above, I'm happy to hitch a wagon to him because I agree that we need to revitalize the nuke industry in order to counter use of fossil fuels. Nuke energy is a good fit in many places where renewables won't work but this guy (as a lobbyist for the nuke industry) won't admit that there are also places where renewables will work better than or work with nuke energy.

Guys we're not going to war with Iran. Absolutely nobody wants to. We move our forces to provide security and as a show of force in various situation. Cool your jets.

Kansas Supreme Court strikes down anti-abortion law
DJL replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
I was not aware that sex was an option with either of them... Anyway, another instance of the right grabbing something a "lefty" says and acting like it's proclaimed as the 10 Commandments of Leftist Doctrine. -
VT isn't claiming #2, UCS is and yes, they know where they get their power from. Again, VT Yankee was shut down because it was LITERALLY FALLING APART and was LOSING MONEY. http://www.ucsusa.org/sites/default/files/attach/2017/04/Clean-Energy-Momentum-report.pdf https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/entergy-to-close-decommission-vermont-yankee-221304391.html Edit: Anyway, I listened to the TED talk and I'm familiar with the speaker. He's a lobbyist for the nuke industry and his TED talk was just more blah blah blah blah. Edit: Also, I know people who worked on getting it shut down and while there are the absolute "anti-nuke" types in there, there are also many who are pro nuke and understand its use in reducing emissions. Many of us hoped for an upgrade to a modern reactor but financially it simply wasn't in the cards for Entergy.
-
Yup. All the more reason to decommission Fossil Fuel Power Plants and move to EV's sooner rather than later as a lot of that consumption is through automobiles.
-
Yes they do. Their nuke power is cheap because it's from already paid off reactors mostly built to 50 year old standards. They built a bunch of reactors after the oil crisis in the 70's and that era of reactor will need to be replaced with modern types built with updated safety measures that they expect will raise the cost of production. They intend to decommission them in areas in which seismic activity or flooding can pose dangers and go to only 50% nuke in the next 20 years.
-
Great. You know that Germany simply doesn't want nuke energy, right? They made that choice.
-
He's a single issue horse. I'm happy to hitch a wagon to him in the interest of growing the nuke sector but he very much makes his money purely by lobbying for the nuke industry. We need a variety of energy sources and each have inherent downsides. Nuke energy does not inherently eliminate environmental impacts.

Come now, billvon, that sounds like good centrist material.

You're questioning why the plant was shut down. The answer is that it was an old piece of shit from a 1960's design, had been scheduled for decommissioning, the state blocked a continuance of its license and it was already losing money. It was necessary for power production BUT rather than fight the case Entergy and the State decided to draw energy from NY and Canada for the grid. So my statement is that you know nothing about VT Yankee and your accusation that the Bernie Bros chose dirty energy over nuke falls flats. It was a needed change even if for a short term loss. VT as of 2017 ranks #2 for renewable energy paired with a 50% reduction in use of oil and natural gas.
-
I used to live right next to that plant. What's your question?
-
I try to steer clear of those as they're typically no better than mental masturbation. Maybe later.

The one about rare earth elements or the one about the birds getting whacked by windmills or the one with the bro in the TED talk or the one with the Voldemort looking guy or the one about birds getting zapped by reflectors or the one about how scary AOC is?
-
Oh...sorry again. So what are we doing here just saying that wind farms are bad in comparison to nothing.
-
Ah....so then it's only eagles we care about while defending fossil fuel?

I'm just saying that Mr. Warden was acting on behalf of self interest in not wanting Mr. Dufresne to go free. I don't think saying that calling someone obtuse is a big deal in most contexts especially that it usually implies that someone is being deliberately obtuse rather than actually dumb.
-
I voted yes because it wasn't about use of the word but about the warden deciding to control Andy. It was justified as a means to break Andy. That might put a wrench in what you were trying to accomplish.

You're very far away from accurately describing that quote. It's no wonder you got the previous "world will end in 12 years" one wrong. https://www.newsweek.com/pelosi-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-glass-water-win-district-1397640 I know it's a catchy headline because you can technically say that she said it but her quote was: “When we won this election, it wasn't in districts like mine or Alexandria's. And she's a wonderful member of Congress, I think all of our colleagues will attest, but those are districts that are solidly Democratic. This glass of water would win with a D next to its name in those districts. And not to diminish the exuberance, and the personality, and the rest of Alexandria and the other members...but the 43 districts—we won 43, net gain of 40—were right down the middle. Mainstream, hold-the-center victories."

Any President would support a sector that was negatively influenced in the short term fallout of a trade dispute.
-
You started this entire thread and it's mostly about her.
-
I'm not interested in defending the stream of consciousness that flows from her pie hole but this is a good example of the right jumping on every little thing she says as if she's declaring the 10 Commandments every time she opens her mouth.
-
This is accurate but it doesn't balance. Plants won't grow in elevated temperatures just because there's more CO2 and they can't pick up and run North either. We have very specific plants growing in very specific zones.
-
I agree with the intent of it but I think it would swing towards 'for some it will work'. People accepted into the Peace Corps are typically very passionate but in the real world high school graduating class there is a very broad spectrum. That's not even to get into the group of people who would see it as forced servitude or state run slavery and be entirely against it. I know that may sound a little dramatic.
-
"There will some people for whom that will be true...." Certainly, just like those who go to the Academies are some of the most intelligent and highly motivated people in the country. I know I'm painting a picture that throws all teenagers into the category of couch potatoes and I know that's not the case. I don't see any system doing a better job at getting something from those graduating seniors that they couldn't do better themselves by perusing their own career path. You're certainly not going to get something out of them at large by training them for some year long job as chosen by the state. What would that job be, anyway? Trash pickers, typists...? "?? Uh, right. We've had drafts; they weren't considered unAmerican. " See above, I said mandatory service as a prerequisite for citizenship, the draft is a different issue.

Would you mind reposting your source for that?
