  1. Civilian jumps out of military a/c used to be common before mid-summer 1976. I ran a Northeast Conference meet at the West Point DZ in Walkill, NY, and Hueys were provided for all. Also a warrant officer Huey pilot at Ft. Devens, MA used to bring a Huey into Pepperell, MA for jumps by all. Then a northeast DZO advertised widely that jumps at some event would be made out of military A/C. The local congressman read about it, and that was that.... HW
  2. Hi, Pop Made a bunch of jumps at Indiantown long time ago. Landed on the other side of the canal once. Long time getting back. And partied hard at the Seminole Inn. Anyway, the Norseman used by PI also needed rear ballast; they put a cinder block or two in the back compartment. But I never knew of any nosing over. HW
  3. Turners Falls, MA DZ had two DGA 15ps (at different times). Both were destroyed on landing because they nosed over. So in addition to the p-factor thing, there was the nose-heavy thing. I jumped out (and put students out of) a Howard at Elsinore for a few days in 1976. Interesting student airplane -- the student had to hold onto the strut and climb down a couple of steps on the "ladder." HW
  4. Well, Massachusetts has something to the same sort of effect. It's called a "supervisory waiver" from the state Aeronautical Commission, and you need one to supervise students and to run, perhaps also to be on a demo jump. At least it's free. HW
  5. Mike Eakins is, AFAIK, co-owner of Skydive Monterey Bay, CA
  6. Tom McLaughlin jumped out of the Hood blimp into the Children's Museum in Boston. Very hairy because he had to land on a small dock area a few feet from the water. HW
  7. Dave Strickland owns/operates Airborne Adventures, a DZ based at Northampton, MA airport. Al King, ex USPA HQ type, also works there. HW
  8. Yr right. Got my routes mixed up. Top O' Tampa was at 54 out of ZHills at the intersection of 75. HW
  9. Usta be called Top O' Tampa, I believe. And they had a wind tunnel there for a while. Wierd looking out at the freeway traffic from in tunnel "freefall." For those in the general Tampa area, there was also even longer ago Mac McCraw's "ranch" in a cow pasture east of Tampa. Richard Bach of Jonathan Livingston Seagull fame made some jumps there and flew in sometimes in his DeHavilland Heron. HW
  10. Yes. It ws flown by Bobby Sweet. I jumped out of it a number of times. Willy Sweet was the DZO. Bobby went in in Maine some years ago. HW
  11. Bear in mind that FCE2 requires at least a G4 processor There's a full list of features and requirements on the Apple website. All in all, stick with 1.1. You don't need Pro HW
  12. I hope everyone who favors the American position (as I do) does not kneel in front of the student on takeoff. I have a friend who is in a wheelchair for life because he was kneeling when the Cessna crashed. Sit facing the rear with seat belt on until whatever altitude, then unbelt and turn around to face the student. HW
  13. No problem for this Earthlink user. HW
  14. Very impressive lists. I have a few that I haven't seen here (or didn't recognize the nomenclature.) Noorduyn Norseman (UC64A) Lockheed Electra Lockheed Lodestar (aka Lodestall) C123 DeHavilland tiger Moth Howard DGA 15P HW
  15. Well, DC3 and C47 are sorta the same thing. Porter is Pilatus, not Helio HW
  16. BackinAugust, Airdivr (Eileen Demme) wrote: I thought she was wrong but didn't protest. I'd already mentioned Shawanga Valley. HW
  17. I made a buncho jumps there trying to keep Willie in tow. I' ve seen a photo of a big-way over the prison. On it, someone wrote "from 1,000 feet you can hear the vaseline jars opening." Someone posted hee that "shawanga" originated in Stormville, but that's wrong, right? Who besides me and Drew know the current name of the DZ then known as "Ferd's Place"? HW
  18. Then throw away iMovie and get Final Cut Express. HW
  19. Well, there's always ''You have 17 seconds to learn how to fly". HW
  20. It already exists. It's called rec.skydiving. HW
  21. That's why you have an Edit button HW
  22. Well, other, larger aircraft with many more people on board have reportedly flown under it also HW
  23. Sorry, Pop, but it was a 182, though Turners had a couple of Howards at various times. Spoken with some authority because I knew all of the participants except, maybe, the student. HW
  24. For those who did not notice or recognize the name, this post is from the legendary Paul Poppenhager, who ran the legendary DZ at Indiantown, FL for years. HW
