  1. The next reunion of the Pioneers of Sport Parachuting (aka "Old Farts") will be held at Felicity, CA (near Yuma) Feb. 13-14, 2010. Felicity ("The Center of the World") is the home of its mayor, Jacques-André Istel, D-2. For those of us still jumping, there will be a plane, probably a Porter from Skydive Arizona. You can get more information and make reservations here. HW
  2. More than I really wanted to know. They both got home safely and are returning to Pepperell to pick up more airplanes, cars, tool truck, etc. HW
  3. Central Missouri, with occasional visits to DZs in the region. The brown 206 will get a PT-6, but that will take a year. HW
  4. Sob. 121PM, having spent its infancy in the Northeast, its adolescence and more, in California, and a couple of years back in the Northeast, is now moving to the midwest. I was on its first load at Pepperell, but missed the last one yesterday. And today it's stuffed and ready to fly out. Over and out. HW
  5. It is 203E (the Sullivan, MO) crash Otter, wearing a Pilgrim tail after the original one was chopped off by a copter blade during the filming of Point Break. Video by Tom Sanders, in Over The Edge and from a Bud Lite commercial. (Or so VPJR tells me.) HW
  6. As the result of a subsequent incident, his ratings were suspended, he chose not to accept an offer to reinstate them, and has disappeared. The door was bent, but pounded back into shape. There was also a substantial dent in the horizontal stabilizer. The RH rear exit door exited an Otter in Pepperell many years ago. I think it might have been 125PM, which is now at Mile-Hi. It was never found. HW
  7. Hee, hee. I was on that load; my two-way was second out and I was near the door. About a second after they left, there was a loud bang; no one knew what happened, but the plane was still flying. Turns out the "instructor" on the camera step managed to open the baggage door. It ripped off, flipped over the top, and hit the horizontal stabilizer on the right side. When I landed and walked in, Emiko was already looking at the gaping hole. My pictures attached. The door was found several days later, pounded back into shape, and reinstalled. The "instructor" is no longer jumping. HW
  8. My email says "Gopro has finally communicated a firm date that they will be shipping the cameras to us. They will ship the Helmet HEROs to us this Friday, and we should receive them towards the end of next week. We should be in a position to ship them late next week." This from helmetcamcentral.com. HW
  9. All the pictures of fire trucks etc. were taken the day an experienced jumper landed in a tree -- totally avoidable. Three or four TV stations had live reports from the scene, including helicopters flying overhead. The picture of the Otter with the 121PM tail is from a Bud Lite commercial. It was probably taken when the tail was on 203E, but i will ask Jr. HW
  10. I did a live chat with helmetcamcentral today. They are now expecting them this week for shipment next week. FWIW. HW
  11. Here's an architect's drawing (yes, it had an architect.) I've indicated where Jumptown is. I'm sitting looking at the area as I write, and I made three jumps today into roughly where the "peas" in the center are. They really weren't peas as such, just sand. It was actually the Sixth World Meet, in 1962; just the first in the U.S. Among the competitors was Loy Brydon, who died over the past weekend. More, later, if anyone cares. HW
  12. The Parachutist story is being written. HW
  13. Reading the EXIF data in my scans is a violation of the rules, and will be severely punished. HW
  14. Pretty picture; Parachutist cover. Who, where, when? HW
  15. I've already suggested that to Ed Scott. (And Tee is a sweetheart.) HW
  16. You can see it briefly in this clip, taken at Z-Hills in the mid 70s. HW
  17. Here's the obituary info on Loy: His "ex-wife and best friend," Tee Taylor, was herself a skydiving champion in the early 60s. HW
  18. I should add that Loy was also recipient of the USPA Lifetime Achievement Award: He also was fond of riding his BMW bike, and rode it to some reunions in recent years. HW
  19. I was saddened to learn of the death Sunday of Loy Brydon, D-12, of a heart attack at his home in Tucson. Loy was an original member of the Golden Knights and a fierce competitor. But he was also influential in the design of some early sport parachutes, advancing the development of what were, for their time, "high performance" canopies. HW
  20. The chief pilot for Rampart Aviation, the CASA company, used to fly smoke jumpers out of a Do-228. He's a big fan of Garrett engines. HW
