Dave, you know better than that. Don't advise people to f*ck around doing stuff during a mal other than chopping it. I can see the fatality report now...."witnesses said the jumper appeared to be fumbling with his slider until impact". Followed of course by the obligatory AAD disclaimer. I didn't say put it back on top of the risers, just push it above your head. Even then it was only if it really bothered you, not a requirement. A stuck or misrouted toggle is a low speed mal. It is even a landable mal. It is a non-issue that you're making into a big issue. I'm not talking about tying your shoe laces with a PC in tow, I'm talking about having a stuck toggle under an otherwise stable and good flying canopy. You typically have time to make good decisions if you're deploying at a reasonable altitude. Doesn't matter. If a jumper - especially a young jumper - is faced with a malfunction (low speed or high speed) that requires a cutaway, the LAST thing they should do is include unnecessary steps that add extra time to the EP process. There have been countless fatals and near fatals because the jumper got distracted by unimportant shit and let time get away from them. Besides, if - as you suggested - a jumper is concerned about a stowed slider releasing, why the hell would they use that type of stowing devise to begin with??? On that note, I have never heard of a single stowed slider that has caused a problem during a cutaway anyway. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Help with importing audio tracks on Sony Movie Studio

Thanks - I'll do that. As far as codecs, I haven't downloaded any. I don't even know what they are. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
Help with importing audio tracks on Sony Movie Studio

I did register both programs after the re-install. Not sure about re-installing DVD Arch before or after VMS, as I re-installed VMS and then read online about re-installing DVD Arch, but did a second re-install of VMS after it still didn't work. Do I hear you suggesting I uninstall and re-install both programs, re-installing VMS first? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -

Help with importing audio tracks on Sony Movie Studio
chuckakers replied to chuckakers's topic in Photography and Video
Thanks for the reply, Eagle. These were clips shot with my CX-100 at the recent FLCPA swoop comp at The Farm. I also tried to import some older clips (also from that camera) and they also had no audio. Just as a test, I imported an .avi file and the audio imported just fine. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
I am not sure how jump numbers factor into this. Are you implying that with more jump numbers it's okay to NOT focus on the pattern? Collapsing a slider takes maybe 3 seconds. Make sure you're clear and have a good canopy, then collapse it. I'm not implying anything, and said nothing about collapsing the slider. I'm saying that at 40 jumps he should keep his attention on the important shit. The improvement in performance from stowing the slider on a moderately loaded canopy isn't significant anyway, so why have a 40-jump wonder screwing around instead of flying the canopy and avoiding traffic? After all, stowing a slider is typically done shortly after opening - one of the prime times for "failure to see and avoid" collisions. Collapsing the slider, sure. Getting rid of the flapping noise under canopy is actually an unintended safety feature as it allows the jumper to hear better if other jumpers yell or whistle to get the noobie's attention under canopy. Stowing the slider, no. It only serves to divert the noob's attention and opens up a world of new problems like the slider grommets getting hung up on toggles - or worse, releasing one. Funny how everyone replied to the OP about his question with tech talk, but no one bothered to enlighten him about the new negative possibilities of their advise. This sport just keeps gettin' more interesting by the day.... Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Help with importing audio tracks on Sony Movie Studio
chuckakers replied to chuckakers's topic in Photography and Video
I recently had problems with my Sony Movie Studio crashing so I decided to re-install it. After the installation I tried to import some clips and they import without the audio track. I have played the clips using windows media player and the audio is there. I also re-installed Architect (the accompanying DVD authoring software). Additionally, I imported a couple files from a friend's go pro HD and it imported the audio tracks just fine. Any help appreciated. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -
Assuming the jump numbers on your profile are correct, you don't need to be focusing on stowing your slider. You should be focused on canopy control and traffic from opening to landing. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

Swoop Gone Wrong - The Aftermath

"He's a grown up. He can make his own decisions. I'm not going to hold him back" And if that's the DZ's attitude, their safety record will reflect it sooner or later. Anyone want to do a DZ body count? Anyone? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -

I couldn't begin to tell you what it would cost to run one, but I have several jumps out of a Caribou with the old engines on it. I don't recall the climb rate, but it's a fun plane to jump. Kind of feels like an over-sized Casa. Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX

NO WIND JUMPS- keeps hurting me
chuckakers replied to ravel's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Get a bigger canopy. You are at least 1.3:1 at less than 100 jumps. I may be a bit "old fashioned" but I can say for sure that you will be able to land a bigger canopy better than the one you have. Wing loading is cool, but good landings are cooler - and less expensive! Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX -

Not sure I see the benefit, especially at 18 jumps. But hey, what do I know? The benefit is learning about canopy flight and control. Good stuff, I say. Yeah, I know. Just seems at this point he would be better off learning what the canopy will do with toggles and should BE PAYING ATTENTION TO WHERE HE'S FLYING. I get that we need youngins' to know how to fly with risers, but.... this guy clearly stated he has 18 jumps and flew the canopy with rears until flare time. I'm thinking once he got to pattern altitude he might've wanted to be using toggles and stop experimenting with control inputs, but as I said. "what do I know"? Chuck Akers D-10855 Houston, TX
