  2. My wife is at a speeding awareness course as she had the choice of a fine and points or a fine and the course. It is the 2nd time that she has been on the course and she is 3 points away from losing her license. The instructor went round the room and asked why people speed. My wife answered honestly that it is because she likes driving fast as it is fun. She drives a BMW sport and reckons that nearly everyone else on the course has either a sports car or SUV. She gets pissed cause I have a clean license - never had a speeding ticket ever. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  3. It is horses for courses really. I have flown in 2 tunnels that are very different. 1) Zurich has an open air tunnel. It requires much more skill to stay stable as the airflow isn't very smooth and you can "fall off" the column of air onto the cushions around the edge. The big positive on this is it is very cool to be able to "fly" up above the building (it is on top on a multi-story building) and see the countryside. 2) Bedford. I suspect it is unfair to compare this to commercially derived tunnels as it started its life as a Military test facility. This probably gives it huge headstart in terms of the money and engineering that was originally put into it - never mind what the Bodyflight guys have done to make it suitable for human flight. It is very large allowing you to learn without constantly hitting the walls, airflow is smooth and powerful. Note following one of your other posts - you couldn't double up newbies in a larger tunnel as it doesn't take long to travel 2 or 3m and that could result in bloody noses etc. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  4. Really? So you have pro-gun folks using reports on children than list anyone under 21 and a child? So you have pro-gun news reports that flat out lie about what the law says? You have pro-gun news reports that show one gun and then the results of another to allegedly show the effects of the first? You have a pro-gun author who has been stripped of acacdemic awards for inaccuracies and lies in a published book? Feelings over facts was the question. Lies were not discussed and honestly the vast majority of my input on US gun control comes from SC it is not very high on my interests agenda. Using lies to make claims is despicable and shows very little maturity or strength of argument. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. Hardly. Feel free to prove out your claim, though. There are 2 that stick out to me the most. 1) Guns make you safer. This is only true where the owner is properly trained and mentally prepared to use it. I have no doubt that guns make "some" people safer. 2) Accidental discharges. When I use that term I can be almost certain that there will be an outcry. The emotion behind the fact that some people make stupid mistakes is very amusing. It is a negligent discharge till it happens to you There are instances where gun control/changes in law create a hysterical response in the USA, where the actual facts are distorted beyond belief. Take as an example UK gun law and see how many US citizens actually know the true situation - and yet it is often upheld as the very essence of anti-gun. PS If I lived in the US I would definitely own a sport rifle probably a 30-06 as that is what I grew up with. I am not someone who believes in gun-control as I don't think it accomplishes what it sets out to in the first instance. 7. Good question. I was intending the vote to be based upon "what should be". But I can see already from the results that many people are voting based upon "what is". Guns don't kill people.... People with guns kill people Heard that recently and thought it was funny. I believe that the religion of the gun is unique to the USA. Pretty much everywhere else that I have lived and worked the general populace don't give a damn. Even here in the UK most people (not politicians) don't really care and it is not a topic of conversation. Rifle clubs exist and have members and game shooting is alive and well. Honestly though guns are really fun - but the righteous indignation presented by the pro-gun lobby is very funny. They are as guilty as the other side of feelings over facts. 8. Show me your proof, Bill. Prove that God doesn't exist. You have 24 hours. Or admit the above is false. Easy - God either doesn't exist or he hates amputees cause he's never healed a single one in the history of time. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. From the clip it "appears" that the conversation went down a rabbit trail. The conversation started with winding down the window NOT with is this your car. When people are not being dicks quite often the pertinent question is not the first question asked. I flew into the US yesterday and the lady at Immigration asked about my flight, commented on the weather and after a couple of general conversational type questions got to the "official" questions. 11. crap I was hoping you were going to be complaining that one boob was bigger than the other with photographic evidence. As you can see my weakness is boobies but I am not embarrassed by it. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. Impossible Jo. Just don't let it get under your skin. You can't expect people to censor the dialog here just because a topic offends or hurts you. If you put Duane forward as Cooper then EVERYTHING is open for discussion including his disease and its symptoms. 377 It gets under my skin One minute he was so sick that he knew he had "nothing to lose" and the next minute he is healthy and strong. It doesn't stack up. Even in this modern age of the metrosexual man, how many men go to the doctor BEFORE symptoms show up? Men are known to ignore symptoms for far to long 40 years ago it was much worse than now. I don't buy it - personally I think Duane was healthy and had nothing to do with Cooper. I would almost put money on the fact that he was a cooper fantasist. In most of our lives we have heroes often related to our line of work, Cooper was Duanes idol. Cooper was the James Bond of thieves he pulled of a massive caper, dazzled the girl(Tina) and got away with a lot of loot. Duane was bumbling along as a petty thief. BTW 377 the significance of stealing kool-aid was to tie him in to the CIA Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  13. I think Shah thought Nigel was talking about lurking dz.com as apposed to lurking at an actual dz. You can definitely get in a pissing match here. Hey Shah, you could also check out some of the other drop zones near you this winter just to say hello, fill out your waivers and make some new contacts if it is too cold to jump. That way when the weather breaks you can hit the ground running. I see you have Skydive Sussex as your home dz. Sky's the Limit is less than an hour and a half from there and depending on where you call home may be closer to you. Good people there. You could also take a run up to the Ranch or down to Cross Keys. Make it a goal to visit more drop zones this year and by visiting them now you help alleviate any anxiety you may have of walking in to a drop zone as an unknown. When you are going to visit let people here know and maybe they can meet you and introduce you around. Edited for spelling. Probably missed many others. Yes sorry if it wasn't clear dz.com is entertaining but no substitute for the real thing. Just to add the universal passport to a dz is a case of beer. Hanging out at the dz after hours allows people to get to know you and believe it or not there are people out there who really do give a shit and will take you under their wing. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  14. But things become a pissing match real quick. The above videos were perfect. Perhaps the best I have ever seen. Maybe...just maybe...to get more people to stay in the sport it wouldn't hurt if there were some sort of sticky which had vidoes like this and others showing what each level of an AFF should look like and a POV view of what a student landing should be. And for someone with free time and a bit of skill there is a real market need for beginner books and videos. But so far thank you. This has been very helpful. I greatly appreciate it. Not sure what you mean about the pissing match as I haven't really come across that at any dz I have been to. I know you like the video's but pretty much every single experienced jumper has bashed them in this thread. Honestly if I am going to watch videos of freefall then there are fantastic tunnel training videos that are out there. http://www.skyleague.com/pages/news/showArticles.php?story=1414 At least you are being talked through what you should be doing by an experienced person. I am not a very experienced jumper but POV video while entertaining is flawed. A big problem with new jumpers is often flairing to high, a wide-angle video camera is going to make the sight picture worse not better for this. The only specific area where I think POV video might be helpful is with malfunctions. I am happy to be told that I am wrong on this - but I would rather get a sight picture of a main/reserve entanglement from someone else's experience! Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  15. Shah one suggestion that you haven't given is that there is nothing like "lurking" at the dz to learn. If it is colder than you would like, or you are too poor at the time you can still watch the landings. I don't know about your DZ and USA, but I used to help with landing students (we used an arrow that needed to be steered). I don't know if and when you would be allowed to fly students by remote control on the radio - but it certainly wouldn't hurt to stand next to the guy doing it and listen. 16. takes character to come back and apologize. thanks Not only takes character, but he owes beer for the first ever apology in SC Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  17. I have been [around] young kids in school, not as a [parant], but rather as somebody witnessing young people learn the basics of how to read and write (and type). I'm guessing this was not your school I saw. If only it was just your grammar and not your logic. But it's both. Do yourself a favor and STFU. Sorry my grammar and spelling suck. I drop into the forums and don't spend much time proof reading. I guess you have seen how kids comply while driving people nuts then. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  18. But she is so fucking hot so who cares /one of my top celebs. //yum. Yup never noticed - just saw her boobs Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. Are you a parant or have you been around young kids much? Young children will "obey" you while deliberately trying to show you who is the boss. For example tell our son to get in the car NOW or he will be punished he will start walking to the car - 1 step every few seconds Is he complying? I see this drivers behaviour in exactly the same light. For some people everyone around them is an arsehole, if they stepped back and looked in the mirror they might get a shock. Don't forget that guy is facing disciplinary action, jeez he's unlucky seems everyone is out to get him By the way and for the record - with your stance on "rights" and freedoms I really don't think you should ever bitch about illegal immigration. I would hate for an innocent citizen to be inconvenienced in the process. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  21. Shah I am sure someone else has mentioned it already but I wouldn't beat yourself up. 7.5 years of marriage and a sudden ending. Honestly there are people who will do alot to gain entry into certain countries. The USA is a lovely place you might have been her "green card". You've already mentioned the embassy were wary for whatever reason. My money is on the above scenario. At the end of the day it is nice to have someone you can share your life with but it is far from essential. A close friend(s) (male or female) can keep you going for life. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  22. Yes I have flown in a lower power tunnel that needed very baggy suits. I don't mean that you should consider building a tunnel but it might be fun to hold the record for the "slowest flight in a wind-tunnel" in the Guinness Book of Records as an example. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  23. So how would the driver rolling the window down all the way, have done anything to help the BP determine his citizenship? It would have helped set the scene of a compliant and helpful person, rather than someone out to be awkward. Have you ever tried to talk next to a busy road? It is very difficult to hear against the background noise. And do you really think the window being all the way down would have helped the agent determine citizenship when he never asked about it? He asked about car ownership (which the driver answered). Don't you think if the driver were asked, "Are you a U.S. citizen" instead, that he would have answered that question? I watched the video and I am sorry but the border patrol guy is polite. He says "Can you wind down your window sir?" Muppet "Yes" BP "Is that as far as it will go?" Muppet "it can go down more" ---> ATTITUDE PROBLEM is here! If a guy askes you if it can wind down more why not simply wind it down if you are not looking for confrontation? BP "Is this your vehicle sir?" is the 3rd question asked. Honestly what did the guy think when someone asks if your window can wind down more? Did he think that the BP guy doesn't know how far a cars window winds down? Sure if he was asked "are you a US citizen?" he would probably have answered. I have no problem with authorities giving suspicious or awkward people a closer look - in my opinion that does help to reduce the threat of terrorism and criminal activities. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  24. The Supreme Court has stated these checkpoints are only allowed in order to briefly determine immigration status. That being said, how would rolling the window down all the way have helped the agent determine immigration status when the agent chose not to ask about it? He instead chose to ask about vehicle ownership (which has nothing to do with immigration status). So how would the driver rolling the window down all the way, have done anything to help the BP determine his citizenship? It would have helped set the scene of a compliant and helpful person, rather than someone out to be awkward. Have you ever tried to talk next to a busy road? 25. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=meGJ0Wiou3U This video was posted in general skydiving discussions. I personally think the guy in the car is being a dick. Why be obstructive? They were polite and asked him to wind down his window which he childishly did only the bare minimum. They asked him to step out of his car and he refused. What I find extremely funny is that he is probably one of the guys who rants about illegal immigrants at the same time. PS note at the end he is being disciplined.
