  1. A friends dad had just bought a new 308 and was showing it around to his mates. My friend was told to take it and put it back in the gun safe - on the way back to the safe he pulled the trigger... He discovered that a 308 round makes quite a big hole in a brick wall at a 1 foot range. Luckily no one was injured. 3. It looks like I will hopefully be coming along for a couple of days. I just need to convince Andy and Hans to babysit me
  4. And that raises my blood pressure. I am sorry I am not normally supportive of parents losing their children. But let us be real here scaring the shit out of your children with stories of hell and brimstone is not acceptable. I hope this little girl doesn't get totally screwed up by her parents. On May the 21st she is going to be a wreck Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  5. Disclaimer - I have never met or dealt with KK. Business's do go under and sometimes it is due to poor customer service, sometimes poor business practice or knowledge. But sometimes all it takes is a few events of bad luck to take a business under. Granted alot of people are out of pocket in to fairly large sums of money. Under UK law at least if you paid on a credit card there is quite alot of recompense available it is something people could look into. From the outside looking in... It looks like Gary is a "nice guy" who tried to bend the rules and go the extra mile for customers. The problem looks like the "nice guy" persona over-took the business needs and it all got into a big mess. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  6. I know what happens at the farm stays at the farm but that is pretty kinky Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  7. I don't think the higher cutaway force is designed in there on purpose, it's more of a negative influence from the mini-risers. Fabric loop handles are on most tandems these days, they don't seem to bunch up or get twisted, what they do is give ya a large easy to see, grasp and operate handle. My 'newest' rig (two years old) came with a fabric loop cut-away handle, but I changed it out to one of those pillows with the finger pockets...only because jumping demos, my hands are moving around quite a bit deploying chest mounted smoke, pyro or flags. Didn't want to hook the larger loop accidentally. The joys of internet communication. I didn't mean to imply that the higher cutaway force was an intentional design parameter. I am aware that it is a negative and was trying to note a possible "unintentional benefit" with regards to snagging. 8. no there was not much thread drift. It is not far to go from a leak to a pissing contest Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  9. Mini risers are also a contributor to how it has become more difficult to cutaway under such high g scenarios. Mini 3-rings have higher cutaway forces than the std large rings. The difference is significant, and even the Aerodyne miniforce system doesn't match the low cutaway force (see attachment, I think it came from a post of Bill Booth many years ago). I don't know if the force on the chart is per side or total. For the sake of a little less drag and weight, it takes a lot more to cutaway. Add in the very real possibility that your risers may not be made quite to the standard (mfg tolerances are more critical for mini rings) and this can also increase the required force. So, I think it is important to talk about this as one of the contributors to high cutaway forces. My 2 cutaways with std/large 3 rings have been really easy to do with one hand, and can't understand how so few (especially heavier jumpers) choose the larger rings. Getting back to the original thread subject, I am a big fan of handles that have a big hole in them (such as soft loop cutaway and metal reserve). I also love my low profile reserve handle, it is much less obtrusive but still extremely easy to find and use (proven in battle conditions). I would consider such a handle for my cutaway if it had a greater distinction from my reserve (see attachments). Even if my hand/arm/body/brain is injured, using such handles is much easier. Even if I'm stupid enough to use ski type gloves with that are horrible for use with soft pillows, it is not such a problem for handles with a big hole. I find it interesting that freeflyers are so keen to not have a metal reserve handle, as they so seldom come in contact with each other. Interesting chart. I assume that having a higher cutaway force reduces the chance of an accidental cutaway with a D ring style handle. I would worry that a fabric handle could bunch up or twist in such a way that it is difficult to use - but I've only seen the photos. What benefit do they have over a metal D ring? 10. Just to split the discussion from the incidents thread. What is the history for the pillow cutaway handle? Back in the day the main was deployed with a ripcord, so there might have been logic to not having 3 D-ring handles on the early piggyback systems. It would make sense that you didn't want to confuse the right hand side main ripcord with the cut-away handle. Snag hazards are obviously a consideration - you don't want to cutaway by mistake at 100 foot. But the dynamics of a cutaway have changed over the past 20 or 30 years. High WL create greater G-forces that have created the need for hard-riser inserts and other problems such as people struggling to cut-away. 11. Does anyone have an update on Wally? There is a UK site that lists it but you can't buy. http://www.adventurearchive.com/data/books_videos/order.asp I am interested in buying a legitimate copy (don't support piracy) and am happy to have used - although I am not sure if you can get it on DVD. I remember a couple of classic scenes like the frap hat "sick bag". Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  12. Hanging around dz's is fun. You get to watch, listen and learn. I don't know anything about your dz but it is probably a good opportunity to start learning how to pack. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

    Boogers

God is there anything more sexy than a girl picking her nose? Maybe when she is picking mine. I remember reading somewhere that there is "nose picking porn" where hot chicks pick their noses or similar. Tried searching and I don't want to be like Twardo on her asking for help to fix my PC. I did find this funny thread thoughhttp://hubpages.com/forum/topic/39677 Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

  15. So can we expect announcements on planes now along the lines of "if any passenger has an ipad charger please notify the crew. Unfortunately we will be in a holding pattern for the next 30 minutes while the captain charges their ipad and figures out where we should be going" Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  16. One possibility would be that freedom of information was altered or amended such that the judiciary could provide independent scrutiny of government actions. The problem with the Military, politicians and the Civil servants is that it is in their interests to be overly secretive. It is naive to think that in modern society there should be no secrets, but it is equally naive to believe that politicians are "well intentioned". Everyone is focused on WL, but if you want to look at a leak in modern times that nearly destroyed a government (in my view it did destroy them) look at the UK expenses scandal. Our politicians spending habits were blown open by a newspaper, there are about 600 members of parliament and there have been charges and convictions for 4. 18. It dawned on me that I got suckered. Shah I am absolutely convinced that this is a troll. The give-away was when you started the story with "I have a friend..." Hats off to you for some quality entertainment. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  19. http://prettypervy.com/gallery/mrs-pig/ I was watching a show and they were talking about kinks. WTF? I guess it takes all sorts to make the world go round. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  20. Evolution gave us eyes? Or are you one of those engineering types who uses the line "but she is nice" and then try to convince others to lower their standards? My engineering "friends" tried that line on me. Right after the "You should really stop skydiving and riding motorcycles and planning trips to Europe and South America." Lovely bunch of guys.....big wives. I hear they are "nice" But I'll lower my standards when the ladies do the same. Till then, eat well, live well and go big or go home. I didn't say I don't like looks. I have certainly got the better deal as my wife is a hell of a lot better looking than me. I also don't see it as lowering standards - personally someone who shares my interests, is fun and has character is more important to me than looks. The fact that my wife has looks is a bonus. Put it this way even with a wife who is a "plain Jane" but has character you can always look at other women for your eye candy. If you marry someone purely because they are eye candy (in other words all looks and no depth), unless you are in an open relationship you are shafted. Anyway assuming that you find someone that fits all your criteria . Why should SHE have to lower her standards and put up with Mr Average? Let's face it you aren't a Skygod, aren't a Millionaire, don't look like Brad Pitt, and might be not meet her expectations in the size department Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  21. My impression of Shah is that a "hot" woman is someone who is the type who are scared of opening a car door in case it damages her nails. If I had to stereotype it would be a Cosmopolitan model - not Playboy as they are to curvy. I must admit that I am puzzled by how much weight he places on looks. No disrespect but he is no Brad Pitt. 95% of the time I am sure Shah is simply being an A grade troll, but threads like this make me wonder. 23. Funny that's what his wife thinks as well. She thinks all is fine and well and even has the ovaries to criticize modern advertising for the use of healthy skinny girls. Maybe it's just me, I love my friends. I rejoice in their triumphs and empathize when they are down. I feel his pain. I just have to stop seeing the world as a system, as a series of risks and equations. It's not packing, it's not six sigma it's' not engineering. That is out of line... Your idea of a relationship is by "normal" standards unhealthy. Implying that she is either kidding herself or that the relationship is imbalanced is not cool Maybe your friends wife is stuck with a guy with a tiny pecker and all her friends are commenting on what a loser she is stuck with Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  24. It was very good. We have something called first responders. Basically you get trained to deal with 4 or 5 critical situations (heart attacks, strokes etc) and if an incident happens within 5 minutes of where you live/work they will call you out before an ambulance as the first few minutes saves lives. I am quite keen to sign up. Policing in my neighbourhood would suck, to many drug barons, and wannabe Bin Ladens Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
  25. It has been half term holidays and my daughter signed up for a course for young teenagers by the local emergency services. She can't stop talking about the fun she had. It was hosted by the fire brigade and they have had a week of training from all 3 emergency services (Police, Ambulance and Fire brigade). They have been in uniform all week and taught how to march, work as a team, been in the main control room watching real life incidents come in for attention. It was a small group as only 10 kids signed up. She has come away with training in first aid and generally a good understanding on dealing with car accidents, fires and other emergency situations. Today they had a passing out parade and they split into 2 teams. Her team put out a fire in the training tower using hoses that they had to rig up to the fire engine unaided. The other team "rescued" a dummy from a car crash including lifting off the roof (had already been cut for them), placing dummy on the spinal board etc. My favourite quote was earlier in the week though. Asked her what they did that day and in her normal non-communicative way simply said "we did drugs". Anyway it was a fantastic course and a real insight into what the guys do on a day to day basis. Very good value for £25. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
