The last 2 or 3 minutes I was wondering where the orange canopy was in relation to him. I know that perspective is distorted on a camera but it creeped me out once he started spiraling down towards that airspace... Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

As far as USPA is concerned in section 5.1 of the SIM it is more important to deploy when you are supposed to Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

As everyone else has said regarding deployment speak to your instructors. As far as the AAD is concerned - It is not 100% certain that everything will happen in time to save your life in ANY body position. There are alot of threads here providing detailed analysis of AAD's containers and reserves. I suggest you read alot but question it ALL. Pay particular attention to what the riggers and experienced jumpers say (people like riggerpaul, davelepka, popsjumper, ron, billbooth and billvon are all people that I trust). But remember that they are writing on a forum and you could misunderstand the context of what they are saying so always check assumptions with the people who are responsible for training you. Setting landing direction (was: Perris double fatality)
nigel99 replied to Deisel's topic in Safety and Training
So, if you happen to visit a DZ that has the FMD rule, please be aware: -Landing direction could change at the last possible minute. -It could change even after that last possible minute. -Be prepared to dodge those last-minute waggers who drive all over the sky chasing the guy that they think is the FMD. -Keep your head on a swivel and be prepared to dodge the people who are focused on the FMD instead of the airspace around them even if tthey are not wagging. -Be prepared to do downwinders regardless of windspeed. -Be prepared to share that way-out-there landing space with the 22 others who don't want to land near that FMD guy either. -Have 9-1-1 on speed dial. Good luck. It seems that at the very least Perris should be doing a thorough review of their procedures. I don't buy into the argument in the latest incident that it is simply perris "time in the bucket". I don't have the knowledge or experience to agree or disagree with their current approach but that doesn't mean that people with the appropriate knowledge and familiarity with large dz's can't review and make recommendations in the interests of ensuring that safety is as good as it can be. Fire extinguishers banned as a fire safety hazard
nigel99 replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
Someone can correct me but I believe a large proportion of high rise flats in the UK are council housing. I am not sure that education is on the agenda for the average tenant. Sorry if that comes across as condescending. It is common practice in the UK to have both extinguisher types. Picture is what is in my office including the signs. Argus ban discussion (Was Argus Ban List)
nigel99 replied to Coreefdiver's topic in Gear and Rigging
There should have been some detail pic/close up of the steel shot ball I am curious. Is testing carried out by an independent third party or the manufacturer? I am not suggesting that Argus aren't telling the truth - just that 3rd party testing and investigation tends to have more credibility and it is something that they desperately need if they are going to survive. The inquisitive side of me would also like to see close ups of the ball to see if it was damaged by the cutter. It takes balls to jump an Argus Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived. -
Fire extinguishers banned as a fire safety hazard
nigel99 replied to JohnRich's topic in Speakers Corner
Source: http://www.metro.co.uk/news/115014-extinguishers-banned-as-a-fire-safety-hazard A risk assessment shows that the average person is more likely to do something stupid or misuse the equipment and get injured than be saved so why waste the money on them? The following incident happened 4 days ago in my home town. I don't know if you have ever seen water put on an oil fire it isn't pretty. Aircrew are exempt. I don't have a problem with a 6 year old being selected. The guys on the front line have instructions to follow. The TSA staff could easily turn it into a game for younger kids that they have to do (training could help). Parents could grow up and instead of blaming the TSA for their kid starting to cry they should think about how they as adults handled the situation. The Space and Rocket Museum in Huntsville is about the largest there is in the world, all of it about space and rocket technology. The Pathfinder mock-up shuttle has been there probably at least 20 years. It has been the only shuttle on display. They also have a real Saturn V rocket that was surplus when NASA ended the Apollo missions and that is housed in a new building on the grounds, and it is on the register of national historic landmarks. It's a very nice museum with its own IMax theater. Yes and they have an A12 at the entrance in Huntsville (or used to) which was the predecessor or prototype to the blackbird one of the sexiest planes out there. Yes seatbelts was my immediate thought when I saw this. I tend to get complacent and will occasionally unclip my seatbelt close to the ramp - probably won't do that again. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I don't think the posted jump numbers count. They aren't audited and anyone can drop a D license and number of jumps in that gives them so called credibility. Post count is totally irrelevant (but you already know that) Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I would agree that it is not a reliable resource. It is a loosely moderated forum that is not an official outlet for information. Not that you can't get visibility of information that you can subsequently verify at an official source. Don't get me wrong - I read and ask questions here alot. I do have a couple of trusted people that I would always run things past though. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

I am from a different generation really. All my early skydiving was done prior to the internet (jeez that makes me feel old). I spent my time hanging out at the dz not that it really helped on who you could trust back then either. The guys posting their concerns see both sides of the coin, maybe it is better to email/chat with the instructors on a one to one? I love the skyhook story especially as my dad was an RAF engineer and that was a prank they used to pull on apprentices 50 years ago (Sending a guy to stores to requisition a skyhook, or anti-centrifugal paint). Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Tunnel is cheaper than an AFF level in the UK. Some of the tunnel instructors jump (but not all) but to my knowledge all of them will focus on skydiving relevant skills if you let them know your plans in advance. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.

Unfortunately life is like that and a reason that reputation is so important. I think that is one of the key strengths of dz.com IF you hang around here enough. You learn about people who are sound individuals that you can trust. Experienced jumper - someone who has made mistakes more often than I have and lived.
-
Just wait'll you have a student tell you "Someone on DZ.com told me that I should..." It's not hypothetical; sometimes, one doesn't find out until something less than positive has occurred. Thanks I realise that you guys to get to see both sides. I guess I am to trusting in peoples ability to think and assess things for themselves. I have a question regarding peoples attitudes to advice given here. There are a number of long term posters who regularly give very good advice, quite a few newbies discuss fears, problems and experiences as well. There are always a handful of trolls or mad skilz people but they normally stick out like a sore thumb. Why do some posters feel that it is necessary to reinforce that you should never take advice over the internet? Surely people use these forums as a basis for discussion with "real people" at their dz's. Are there real incidents where people have read something on here and gone and done something stupid, or is it a hypothetical problem? Some people are very generous. I have had jump tickets bought for me because I was a poor student and friends wanted to see me progress. There are quite a few other examples where I have been helped just out of generosity. Actually something that I don't like is when people have expectations that if you do something for them they some how "owe" you a favour.Sometimes we are just in a better position than someone else at that time. I am an ugly middle aged man so when Divot bought me dinner I am sure that no favours were on his mind but I guess there is a level of expectation that some people have when buying drinks etc for a woman. really - you don't think a shooting with 7 dead would make the news? If such a delusion makes you feel better (how?), fine. But it's a lie. Perhaps for a day or two, less if the victims were non-white. Find an example where 7 people were killed and it wasn't covered. Between the media and the Brady coalition, we know about every one of there. Hell, they even keep telling us about all the shootings that will happen if legislation passes. IOW, if they're willing to repeatedly make up shit, how likely are they to skip over real events? And that's in a nation immensely larger, and with 19x the population of the Netherlands. BTW, at the moment the SF Chronicle site mentions violence in Syria and Libya, but not Amsterdam. There are 100's of examples but they weren't covered - DUH... Just kidding - pretty sure that 7 deaths in 1 go would get coverage in the USA. I reckon the threshold is probably about 3 before it hits national headlines(just a guess). Need help, having doubts.
nigel99 replied to guineapiggie101's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
If you like jumping then the best thing to do is forget about progression. Not everyone manages to go through AFF at the same rate. Focus on having fun first and progressing second. Why not discuss doing a couple of jumps with your instructors that is focussed on the part of the jump that you really enjoy so that they are more fun jumps than training. If money is a real problem then possibly changing over to static line could help. I know people can be very condescending about SL jumps but I really struggled with fear and quite happily did SL jumps because it met my comfort level. Even after I was cleared for freefall I would occasionally do a SL jump to ease my nerves at the start of the day. If canopy control worries you maybe take a break and do a tandem or two... Finally sometimes it helps to change planes, dz's or instructors. Sometimes we just need the right person to connect with us (absolutely no reflection on the current instructors). I tend to prefer the more military shout at you and kick you out the door type. Also with aircraft a little cessna that takes time to get to altitude might give you time to collect your thoughts for example. Lots of things you can play with and learn as you go. At the end of the day remember this is a hobby not a job. Only 2 things really count - enjoying yourself and staying safe. http://nude-house.com/jobs.html This company has an advert in our local paper looking for staff. It is not porn and I believe safe for work with the exception of the New Applicants page (possibly NSFW). So if you are a software programmer opportunity knocks.
