I think you should go back and watch the video he provided. Definetly not the type of unguided toggle yank you are talking about. IMO the turn looks nice and smooth and has good accuracy.

During my military service I was assigned to guard a military warehouse for a brief period of time. We were trained to fire warning shots to the ground before aiming directly to the threat. We were explicitly told to fire warning shots to the ground so they later on could be dug up from the ground to be used as an evidence towards having gone through all other reasonable means of action before opening fire towards the threat. Therefore, having missed the threat necessarily mean the person failed. I might very well be on the contrary. IMO this protocol seems smart.

These guys could have great careers as police officers. LOL. Only in the US it is better to have someone arrested injured rather than uninjured. In other countries we would consider these guards as pros. If they arrested him uninjured having not fired their weapons in an embassy, missing him, and having their rounds go off to who knows where then I'd agree with you. Maby they just fired a warning shot? On the other hand, considering the fact that the guards are US marines, they most likely arent trained to give warning shots.

ok, well you werent in the corner there at least. The 270 looks smooth and efficient. The one thing that remains unseen from the video is if there is any brake input as you let go of your fronts?
-
Im not sure if I would agree. My experience is that if you do a 270 with at least a medium time rotation with an XF2, the canopy will start planing out by itself even if you would be putting you total body weight to the front risers. Therefore it wouldnt make any difference to let them go fast or low, since the only thing you are doing anyways is chin-ups, from the risers. The risers would be already extended to their full lenght anyway at this point. Therefore there is no loose front riser to release. I jump an XF2 @ 2.0, but I have never thought that a lightly loaded one would pop up, after an efficient rotation, but I would guess it could happen. The XF2 has quite flat trim and short recovery arc for sure. I would really wish to see a video of this pop up, since I have a hard time believing it could happen. IMO the swoop would need to be in corner for this to happen even in theory, but I could be wrong..

Did the student have an altimeter?
-
Agreed. Quality is not the point. Safety is. Therefore give the camera to the student and let the TI focus on the jump 100%. This makes the tandemjump safer. The go pro isnt going to knock anyone out or get entangled any more than a normal altimeter on the students wrist. Your argument is weak.

Have hooded sweatshirts ever caused a malfunction or incident?
BMFin replied to cocheese's topic in Safety and Training
Why wear a hoodie ? Well, it annoys those conservative dinosaurs who think wearing a hoodie is dangerous. Thats a big plus. -
this is not my idea of a good tandem video... but to each his own IMO it was quite ok. Sure a good TI could make it look better, but I guess safety comes first for this DZ?

I think adding a camera to the instructors hand adds much more risk than adding a camera to a students hand or even better the students harness.
-
Because they are a student, and students don't wear cameras. because it just is.. Now thats a watertight argument !
-
I would be interested to hear what do AFF instructors get paid at different DZ´s ? Im not an instructor yet so I would be interested to hear also what are the different tasks: 1) holding a course 2) level jump 3) something else? Thanks! PS. I know there are some threads about this, but since many of them are so old, I thought of asking this once more.
-
Whats the problem? Why not let the customer wear his go pro glove or harness mount ?
-
This thread reminds me of what happened in Empuria a few years back. There was a skyvan brought on site for extra capasity on a busy week and through out the day the last people on the loads in this plane had been landing out. Since almost every time someone was landing out, we asked the pilot if we could make 2 jumpruns ? The pilot immediately declined, and was unwilling to discuss the matter any further. Later on that day one scandinavian fellow jumper landed out and was fatally injured. The next day the skyvan was suddenly flying 3 jumpruns per load. I guess the DZ realized that trying to sqeeze out the few euros of more profit/load simply wasnt worth a human life..
-
Ok, we can disregard stabilization, but sound quality? Even out of the case, sound from GP2 is terrible (regarding tandem interviews). Yeah, thats true. But as I have said earlier also, this is easy to fix with a small and cheap external microphone. (prices start from less than 10€)

I shoot tandems and I recently swiched from a cx115 to a go pro2 and it wins hands down. I dont understand why people seem to think the go pro isnt good for tandems. It frickin rocks!
-
Yes, Im aware of that. Im pretty sure there were a few cameras recording all the time, but not nearly all of them. Also the still cameras need to be triggered somehow. One possibility would be to set them shooting continuously once you push the red button. The capsule had Nine high-definition cameras Three 4K (4,000 x 2,000-pixel) digital cinematography cameras Three high-resolution digital still cameras So, my guess is that the HD cameras were recording through out the ascent, but the three RED´s and the three stills started operating after pushing the red button.
-
Any insight? I tried to look it up on the web site but no info around this magic button:) The red button was to start the cameras outside the capsule. If you saw when he stepped outside, Kittinger went to the next step on the check list which was "start the cameras" and so he did.

Oh dont worry. They managed to pull of one the biggest single marketing campains in the world and it was a success. They will get their money back x 10 times. Its not like they were doing this for charity.

The previous freefall record was held by Eugene Andreev. Kittinger had the longest droguefall. Wikipedia tells me the speed of sound at 11.000-20.000meters is somewhere around 1062km/h. So most likely Felix exceeded mach1

Scirocco - new x-braced main by Skylark
BMFin replied to frost's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Maby you guys could come and hold us a safety seminar. It seems you have talent for these type of things. We clearly are reckles and dont have a clue what were doing.
