I do believe that any person representing a defendant in court has to be a member of the bar, with a license to practice law. I don't think being paid or not makes any difference. I could be wrong on this, and welcome correction if so. Note: This only applies to someone representing someone else. Perfectly legal to represent yourself. Stupid as all hell, but legal.

Yup. During the early 20th century, the Klan had a very firm grip on a lot of local governments. The same ones that picked the names for those places. Hint: When in a small, midwest or southern town, see if you can find the "Kozy Korner Kafe" or something similar. Take a guess what it means.

Fair enough. However, any sort of 'cradle to grave' tracking means 'registration.' I'd be absolutely amazed if that could make it out of committee, let alone to the floor for a vote. Besides, like the idea of 'universal background checks', it wouldn't do a damned thing to stop these sorts of shootings. Same as 'proper storage'. How many of the 'mass shootings' that make the headlines were done with properly purchased, legally owned firearms? The only one I can think of offhand that wasn't was Sandy Hook, where the shooter stole the guns from his mother, whom he murdered. His mother had legally purchased the guns. The ONE high profile shooting that was done with an illegally owned firearm (straw purchase, ended up in the hands of a minor) was... Kyle Rittenhouse in Kenosha.

I don't know. I honestly can't think of anything that would make any real difference that would be feasible to implement. The 94 'ban' was only for new sales. Since it expired, everyone, his brother, sister, cousin, neighbor & kid have bought at least one AR platform. When Obama was elected in 08, everyone thought he was going to 'ban everything' and there was a huge run on guns and ammunition. Then after the Sandy Hook shooting, there were proposals to limit stuff, and again, a huge run on everything. Since those attempts at gun limits failed, there haven't been any serious proposals at the federal level. It's abundantly clear that the Rs, the NRA and the 'alt-right' types are perfectly willing to have dead kids on a fairly regular basis, as long as they get to keep all their guns. They still have enough power to make any changes virtually impossible.

I'd bet they want to. But Dominion won't take any sort of deal like that. They want their day in court. They want vindication. They lost a LOT of business (and revenue) due to Fox's lies. In addition to the lost revenue, they want their reputation back. If it were me, I'd want all the 'big name liars' fired. Gone. I'd want those losing their jobs to close out their final appearance with admissions that they lied and apologies to those they lied about. I'd want the top of every hour and the start of every show to have an admission and an apology for what they did. And enough money to hurt Fox badly. No "NDA", nothing that keeps Dominion from shouting at the top of their lungs "THOSE ASSHOLES LIED ABOUT US AND OUR MACHINES".

Ummm... Right. That's kind of my point.

Do you think the DA hasn't thought about this? Do you think he's so naive that he's not aware of the potential for disaster if he makes mistakes? As was noted, Cohen went to jail for this. And Trump may have a bit of a problem getting competent defense counsel.

It's fucking hilarious that they defend the idea of naming US military installations (and a lot of equipment in the same time frame) after traitors responsible for the deaths of thousands of US soldiers. But watch the tops of their heads come off if you mention Jane Fonda.

Don't forget Parkside and the cop that ran away. I'm not saying we should do nothing. But I'm opposed to some sort of 'theatrical' law or policy or 'armed guards everywhere' or bullshit similar to the TSA since 2001. The only real solution would be to get the guns out of the hands of the people. But I can't see that happening. Especially after Y'all Queda learned that white males can take all sorts of guns and stuff to protests, even entering state capitols with them and have ZERO consequences. Do you think that Vanilla ISIS wouldn't do the exact same thing if any serious gun laws were proposed?
-
How are you planning on paying for that? Not being snarky, honest question. The NG is not an 'armed guard' force. It has a lot of roles, but that really isn't one of them. The other problem is that, despite the "huge" number of these types of shootings, they are really not common. Any particular location is highly unlikely to see one. So, the knee-jerk reaction is to hire guards. And pay them. And when nothing happens in that particular school for a year, 5 years, 10 years, everyone will ask 'why are we paying for this. We can use that money better somewhere else. Volunteers? I'm sure there are lots of qualified adults (former cops, military, security guards) who'd be willing to show up... For a while. But not forever. I'm not saying 'do nothing'. I AM saying 'don't do something that will look good but accomplish nothing'.

Open carry & 'permitless' carry are not the same thing. Open carry means you can go armed. "Permitless' or "Constitutional" carry means carrying concealed with no permit (no checks, no training, no nothing). Most of these shootings are done with military style semi autos. Most often an AR platform, but others have been used. I used the term "assault weapon" because that was the title of the 94 law. I fully agree that it's a misnomer. But that's the term. The idea of that "responsibility law" is a bit ridiculous. "Cradle to grave" ownership tracking? How do you propose to make that happen? That would require full registration of every gun. I think that would be less likely to happen than a ban/confiscation of military style rifles. I agree that mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes would be helpful, but the prisons are overcrowded as it is. Unless you propose to release anyone convicted of a minor drug crime, now that weed is legal in so many places, there really isn't anywhere to put all those 'gun criminals'.
-
I'm not in favor of banning or confiscation of guns. But it's kinda 'funny' that we are the ONLY country in the world that has this happen on a regular basis.
-
The dipshits who claim 'Blue Lives Matter"? Not that cops lives don't matter, but it's abundantly clear that cop lives matter a WHOLE LOT more than the lives of minorities. And have for a very long time.
-
The fun part about this whole thing is who decided to 'honor' those people and when. And where the 'honoring' happened.

I have heard people claim that observer rides are ok, because the observers are engaging in 'sport parachuting', by observing it. I have no clue if that's ever been tested in court. Same as the hauling jumpers along on a ferry flight. Not going to work without seats for the type of trip in the OP. However, my old DZ had the right side seat for the 182. Pulling the floor mat out & putting the seat in only took a few minutes.

Post trump Legal Actions, Including his Enablers
wolfriverjoe replied to Phil1111's topic in Speakers Corner
The 29% that think he did something 'unethical' think it was something 'wrong', but not 'illegal'. He's a hell of a good conman. Always has been. There's also the fact that there are a LOT of people that admire that sort of behavior. Stealing? Assaulting women? Mocking the weak? Calling people rude names? Openly racist, bigoted & misogynistic? Many of his supporters aspire to that sort of thing. They admire him because they want to do it too. -
While the Nashville shooter had a pistol on her, the primary weapons were military style semi auto rifles (2 of them). Not sure where the ability to carry a firearm (with or without a permit) is a factor (note: not being snarky, genuinely don't understand what that point is).

It IS getting mean spirited with all the talk of 'thoughts and prayers'. That's ALL 'they' ever offer. No solutions, no ideas, no NOTHING. As has been asked many times, how many kids have to die for something to change? I'm not in favor of another ban. The first one didn't do all that much. If a new one is anything like the original one, it won't do much either. Don't forget that the original AWB simply banned the sales of newly manufactured guns with certain features. There were still brand new 'post ban' AR-15s being sold the entire time the ban was in effect. 'Post ban' had no flash hider, thumbhole stocks instead of pistol grips, no bayonet lug and came with 10 round magazines (a 20 or 30 round mag could be used, but was technically illegal). The guns that had been sold prior to the ban could still be bought and sold freely (for a lot more money than they originally sold for).

South Park got it right in the movie. I can't remember or find the exact quote, but it was something along the lines of "violence is fine, nudity and naughty words are really bad" Which is a pretty accurate summation of US 'morals'. The funniest part is that when the movie came out, the 'moral outrage' was all directed at the language and the sex. One of the things that was brought up the most was the 'Saddam Hussein & Satan in bed with a dildo' scene. The parts where thousands of soldiers were shown quite clearly being blown into little pieces were not a problem.

According to at least one article I've seen, she had previously failed to follow policies on other things. No, it's the responsibility of the school to inform the parents. What they do with that information is not the schools 'fault'. It's super easy to point fingers and say how stupid this is and that she shouldn't have been fired. But the totality of the circumstances seem to show that it wasn't as outrageous as some want to believe.

The GOP was fillibustering proposed gun control legislation in Colorado. The Ds had enough votes to end debate (there was still a significant amount of debate, the Ds just had the ability to stop it from going on endlessly). Of course, the Rs are all butthurt about it. https://coloradosun.com/2023/03/25/colorado-capitol-debate-limited-democrats/ From the article:

That's part of it. The other thing is that F-16s are 'NATO compatible'. All the stuff that they need to completely integrate into NATO command & control are there. Not so with the MiGs

Its a religious school. They've got LOTS of prayers. Not sure about the 'thoughts', but prayers aren't a problem there. From the story: Apparently we've gone from 'I never thought this could happen' to 'I never thought it could happen to ME'.

So what you're saying is that he's doing the exact same thing he's accusing others of doing.
