A few good things to come out of Charlottesville
wolfriverjoe replied to billvon's topic in Speakers Corner
Well, you have to understand a couple things. #1 - The South has been trying to "revise" history since shortly after the war. While the claim "it was about States' Rights, not slavery has some truth, the main "State's Right" they were fighting for was slavery. #2 - Most of those monuments were not put up immediately after the Civil War. Many were put up in the early 1900s, when states began codifying segregation into law. More were put up in the 50s, when the Civil Rights movement began to pick up steam. #3 - The Battle flag so commonly flown Southerners was simply the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia (Lee's army). It was never the flag of the Confederacy. It wasn't even the "Stars & Bars' (different flag). It was relegated to history and obscurity until the 50s when the KKK adopted it as their symbol. Kind of like how the swasika was a sign mainly used by Buddhists until the early 30s, and has since (and likely will for a long, long time) be recognized primarily as the symbol of the Nazis. Interesting Story on this, and a bit more. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -
Ya gotta wait until January. The 31st to be precise. The next "Blood Moon" will be visible then. Also known as a Lunar Eclipse. And despite the prophecies, there have been a lot of them in the last 2000 years. No Rapture yet. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I think the college has every right to refuse to host them. I just also think that letting such people speak is good for democracy as a whole. Even if you need "free speech areas" to protect the public from them. Or protect them and their speech from the public. We've had a bit of a kerfuffle with the KKK wanting to speak in Madison, on the steps of the Capitol building. Court fights and parade permits and porta-pottie requirements and who pays for the cops and the fences and all that stuff. In the end, they got to speak (which I fully agree is their right). But the "anti" crowd outnumbered them 2 or 3 to 1. The ended up basically having a very small crowd at the base of the steps, inside a portable chain link fence, surrounded by cops (IIRC, the KKK had to pay for the fence and the cops). With a decent sized crowd protesting them. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo

While I am a huge advocate for freedom of speech, no matter how offensive or reprehensible (and this is about as bad as it gets), I don't have an issue with Tx A&M refusing. It's a college campus. And (from the article): Very clear policy, applied (hopefully) fairly and evenly to all who wish to speak. If he can't get any student group to sponsor his hatred, then he should not speak there. Also: I have to wonder what all the veterans who fought and died to stop the Nazis would think about all this. Common meme popping up on FB over the weekend. Not quite. The "Cooper Vane" (small airfoil that uses the relative wind to hold the rear airstairs up) wan't developed until after Richard McCoy did his "copycat" hijack a few months after "Dan Cooper" pulled of his. And I highly doubt that this idiot has anything of value... To anyone but the "History Channel" (and I use the word "History" with a lot of sarcasm). Well, yes and no. Any way he can get the world to react to his words and actions, any way the west calls him "dangerous", improves his stature in the DPRK. It's not really "pandering to his base" as much as it is 'convincing those under his control" how powerful he is. As long as most (almost all) of the DPRK thinks he is the "Great and Powerful Outstanding Leader", he's more secure. The nukes accomplish both that (making the DPRK think the west fears him) and keeps the west at bay a bit. There's not any real way the west would attack, nukes or not. History since '53 has demonstrated that. He (and his dad & gramps) has too much ability to do too much damage, even conventionally. The possession of nukes and the beginnings of delivery systems is just another layer on top. History has shown that once past the 'tipping point', keeping countries from getting nukes is very, very difficult. India, Pakistan, Israel, South Africa (maybe) are all good examples of the failure of non-proliferation. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." While I hate to defend Trump, and that is certainly in line with what he's said and how he behaves, that quote is a bit questionable. From the Snopes link: "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Lucky McSwervy "~ya don't GET old by being weak & stupid!" - Airtwardo -

Bullshit. If BLM focused on cases where innocents were killed where anyone but a black person would get a pass, I'd buy it. The fact that they show up for cases where ANYONE should expect to be shot if they behaved similarly belies that contention. If you think that an enraged NfL type charging headfirst at a cop would get the response of '"oh, he's white - no problem" you're kidding yourself. There are plenty of ways to commit suicide by cop, and that's on the short list. I am not disputing the fact that blacks have been killed for being black. Nevertheless, an awful lot of police shootings of blacks would have followed the same script if the subject was Vietnamese, Australian, Arapaho or Norwegian. I have been in the sights of trigger happy cops (sleeping on the wing of my airplane, for example), and would likely have been shot repeatedly if I had not played 'Simon Says' effectively, and I'm pretty sure I'm not black. Footage of someone in a similar position who insisted on moving quickly or reaching into a bag without permission elicits little sympathy. It doesn't matter that you're not doing anything wrong. The cop can't afford to see what you're digging for, and he/she calls the shots in that situation. Again, BLM had the choice of going for equal treatment or playing the race card. They went the racist route. BSBD, Winsor Well, there's a bit of a problem with the idea that BLM should only focus on cases where the cops shot an innocent black man, and not protest when the actions of the "shot guy" were enough to justify the shooting. If you take the cops word for it, all of the shootings are justified. Take the Laquan McDonald shooting in Chicago. Kid gets shot. On video. Cops on scene say it was legit. Reports filed say it was legit. Supervisory personnel say it was legit. Review board say it was legit. Video can't be released because of "ongoing investigation." Whispers from inside the department say that the video shows that shooting was not legit. Lawsuit to have video released. Day before video gets released, cop gets charged. Video gets released, shows that the cop basically executed the kid. The Walter Scott shooting was similar in the original response from the cops. If the video from the citizen hadn't been taken and released, the shoot probably would have gone down as legit. The Michael Brown shooting had all the same elements. The department had a reputation for racism (show to be accurate by later investigation). The story of the shooting was full of lies and kept changing (lies after lies for a while - remember the 'fractured orbital bone'?). The investigation did end up finding that the shooting of MB was legit. As you say, you attack a cop while outweighing him by a significant amount, expect to get shot. But the way the department handled the whole situation was deplorable. And the investigation showed that. So for BLM to "focus on cases where innocents were killed" is basically ignoring the fact that the cops have a long history of covering their own asses in situations like this. Their credibility is done, especially in the black community. We had a situation down in Madison not too long after the MB shooting. Same sort of deal. Unarmed black youth shot by the cops. Protests and marches. There was a real investigation. State DOJ. Showed it to be a legit shoot. The full results of the investigation were made public. His mom wasn't satisfied, but she was about the only one. Most of the public saw that the actions of the dead guy were why he was dead and left it be. I don't know if that would have happened if it was just the Madison PD Internal Affairs guys making that decision. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I think that the "Bay of Pigs" would also be a good analogy. Virginia was one of the "die hard" segregationist states. Along with South Carolina and Mississippi, they fought the longest and hardest against integration. IIRC, after one of the SC decisions, they chose to pay for black college students to attend out of state universities rather than allow them into their state system. So these idiots and assholes come to Virginia for their little party. They know full well that there are a lot of people sympathetic to their cause who won't say so publicly. I have to think that these morons were expecting that "silent" group to come out and support them, now that they were doing their thing publicly. If so (and I could be wrong on this), they were just a bit off. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." If it's "liberal" to believe "all men are created equal," then I'll wear that title like a badge of honor. If it's "liberal" be be against neo-nazis and the KK fucking K, then I'll wear that one to. That said, I don't think it's "liberal." I think it's simply being an American Decent Human Being. FIFY

Yep. And why do cops shoot black people? Lately the reason has been "I was in fear for my life! I just wanted to be able to go back to my family at the end of my shift. My shooting that unarmed man was unfortunate but perfectly reasonable; he might have had a gun for all I knew." And the media nods their collective heads and says "yes indeed. Tragic, but understandable." And yet two days ago cops faced hundreds of torch-wielding violent white supremacists, one of whom murdered a counter-protester. Dozens were injured; several white supremacists were arrested, one for carrying an illegal weapon. Two cops died in an accident while monitoring the violence. Yet of the surviving police, not one cop was so "in fear of his life" that he needed to shoot anyone. Well duh. Those are Law Abiding racists and bigots. They don't want to kill the cops. They want to oppress black people. (we really need a 'sarcasm' font) "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." The problem with the "All lives matter" is that it's pretty damned clear that all lives do not matter equally. It's abundantly clear to anyone who looks from the outside that "Black Lives" matter far less in our society than just about any other group. And it's also abundantly clear that "Blue Lives" matter far, far more than just about anyone else. Look at what happens to the cops who shoot black people. Paid leave, 'investigation' by their own colleagues, usually a whitewash. Look at the Michael Brown shooting. His dead body lay in the street (during August) for hours. Look at what happens when a cop is killed. The suspects usually don't survive arrest. The funerals are mile long processions, attended by officers from far and wide. For the BLM crowd, the claim that "All Lives Matter" is a slap in the face. Because their lives clearly don't matter. The "Blue Lives Matter" is even worse. As is often the case, when a group that has long been oppressed demands equal treatment, the groups that hold privilege, the groups that were the oppressors are strongly resistant to giving up those privileges. Please, the great Billie Holiday. Words and music by Abel Meeropol. Damnit, damnit, damnit. I even looked it up, considering posting the lyrics. Duh-huh. I'm not sure Trump is fully in touch with reality. He may be blustering and bluffing, he may think that nuclear war is "feasible". He's lived his entire life insulated, isolated and protected from life and consequences. He may well think that anything "bad" would only happen to the "little people". Hopefully those further down the chain of command can prevent him from doing anything stupid. KJU wants nukes and delivery systems to give him a 'security blanket'. The Vox story linked earlier addresses that. And don't forget the drug trafficking by DPRK diplomats. They use the diplomatic bag and their diplomatic immunity to evade arrest. If their goal was that black lives matter as much as anyone's, fine. That is not, however, the case - their point is clearly that black lives matter BECAUSE they're black, which is racist anyway you cut it... Seriously? Do you understand how little black lives seem to matter to some people? The KKK and NeoNazis for sure. Black lives matter very little to them. But how about the "Main Stream Media"? There are hundreds of murders of black people every day. Yet unless it's a celebrity, there's no press. Yet when a white person (especially a young white woman) is killed, it goes national. How about the cops? When a black suspect is killed by the cops, a quick investigation and finding of "justifiable" is typical. Yet when a black man kills a cop, he usually doesn't survive being taken into custody. In the link you posted above about the Dallas shootings, they didn't even really try. They blew up the suspect with a grenade attached to a very expensive bomb squad remotely operated "robot". It's not that BLM wants black live to matter more than other people's, it's that they want them to matter somewhere near as much as other lives. And this really isn't new. Black people have been getting the short end of the stick for a long, long time. It used to be pretty common for lynchings to be public, announced well ahead of time, and supported (tacit or active) by both the cops and municipal officials. Bessie Smith The great Billie Holliday caused a huge controversy with her song "Strange Fruit". Most of that controversy was the fact that she had the gall to publicly state what everyone knew was happening. To 'shine the light' on it, so to speak. Maybe, maybe not. I'm gonna guess that KJU and his closest advisers have decent access to the outside world, to include both info and luxury goods. Again, KJU's end game is to stay in power. I think he's smart enough to know that he needs good, accurate, realistic info to do that. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." I have no problem with conservatives, I am one in many ways. I voted "R" for most of my life. I gave up on them when they stopped leading and started acting like 5 year olds throwing a temper tantrum. But I see no "conservatism" in what we have today. Trump is a wannabe demagogue. He is, by any rational measure, utterly incompetent. He has embraced and been embraced by hateful, bigoted, racist groups. And there is nothing defensible about being a member of the KKK or being a "NeoNazi." Funny how many of them hide their faces under hoods. To imply that there is any equivalency between the 'liberal' anti-Trump protests (some of which had some violence and damage) and what happened in the past couple of days is to ignore reality. I don't think that all Trump supporters are that way, but to continue to support him, and defend him in the face of the information that is coming to light (and it gets worse and worse every day) is foolish. To ignore the truth of what is coming out (and no, it's not all "fake news) is denial, pure and simple. Yet so many do this. And, just out of curiosity, how does the political leanings of the mods dictate what the forum does? Both Quade and Billvon lean liberal. Yet the posts that disagree with them stay up. PAs are warned on both sides of the spectrum. It may seem like the conservatives get punished more often, but it seems to me like they are the ones being the most offensive (not including the nonsensical trolling of a couple of them). Perhaps you feel outnumbered because your position has become less and less defensible and is being abandoned by many. "There are NO situations which do not call for a French Maid outfit." Well, when all those women marched all over the country back in January, it sure got violent. And don't forget all the violence at the Clinton campaign events, where Obama called out for the crowd to attack a man who shouted out from the crowd. Oh... Wait a minute... Well, its almost funny. Trump gave a statement about "coming together" and 'condemning the violence', and a few other things (clearly written by a competent speech writer). So how does the White Power side respond? David Duke said: Link:http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/346326-david-duke-charlottesville-protests-about-fulfilling-promises Edit to add: I missed it during the speech, but Trump said: That's funny. Apparently, someone drove a car through a crowd, injuring multiple people, just came across the news that one is dead. Anyone want to guess which crowd was targeted?
