  1. That simply isn't true. Anything can cause discussion and from that discussion anything can be learned. A lesson, even if it wasn't the cause of the original incident, can still prevent another incident. Derek
  2. With the main packed, the mouth of the BOC hould lay flat against the bottom of the container. The spandex/spandura material should still be elastic. The BOC should hold the PC securely. Derek
  3. WEll, I did say this from the get go "Seems to me Mile Hi's website is right up there in the "inaccurate web site" catagory with everyone else." Most DZ's do it, but it still isn't right. Derek
  4. It is puffery to saw that only MH has the latest safety gear? It is puffery to say that MH has the nocest KA in the country? Etc. Exaggeration is one thing. Saying you are the best I don't mind, saying you are "top ranked" I do think is wrong. There is a line and most DZ's web pages cross it. Derek
  5. Again: Just to clarify, I didn't say that is what happened, it could been any number of things, but this has happened before and is possible. I didn't "presume" or "assume" anything. I said it was possible and has happened before. People should be aware of this so that they never rely on their AAD or RSL or any other back up devices. Derek

I started this thread because I think it is very possible that the incident in questio was caused because the jumper 1) Had a Cypres, 2) Turned it on at home then drove to the DZ which rendered it useless, and 3) She was waiting for the Cypres to fire instead of pulling. Just to clarify, I didn't say that is what happened, it could been any number of things, but this has happened before and is possible. Some jumper's mindsets that their Cypress's WILL save them just like some jumper's mindset's that their RSL WILL deploy their reserve, have caused incidents when their Cypres/RSL DIDN'T save them. That is my point, nothing more, nothing less. Derek
  7. The harness and reserve container are all part of the reserve system which is the TSO'd system. Derek
  8. Having a database allows jumpers to learn from others' mistakes. Take a ook at the NTSB's database for aviation accidents, you'll be surprised at how many there are per day. All that being said, it is jumping out of airplanes........... Derek
  9. I hope the FAA takes no action as I suspect you are probably will never make another, even minor, rigging mistake. Look into the NASA ASRS program . It is basically an almost a get out of jail free card applicable to this type of situation. We all make mistakes, what sets us apart is how we deal with those mistakes. You have proven yourself to have integrity. Learn from it and move on. Beating yourself up too much is counter productive. I wish you the best. Derek
  10. I'd like people not to make skydives so risky that they need an AAD. If you are street racing, as in racing on public streets, then I want you to stop before you kill someone. If you are racing on a track, have at it. I watch NASCAR for the crashes. Derek
  11. Wouldn't it make more sense to slow down and reduce the odds of needing the seatbelt/airbag in the first place? Derek
  12. Did anyone think I suggested that you go out and drive with your airbag disabled and not wear your seatbelt? I did say you should drive like you don't have an airbag.......... People say you should act though you are surprised if your main opens so that you are ready to execute your EP's, that does not mean you should cut away on every jump to prove you are ready. That is NOT my point at all. My point is, do not drive faster/riskier because you have a seatbelt and airbag and do not skydive riskier because you have an altimeter and an AAD. Do not depend on back up gear, because the second you do, it is no longer back up gear. That is my point. Everyone says, well I don't depend on my AAD or altimeter, but these same people have their Cypres fire because their altimeter broke. They were relying on it, they just didn't realize it. Derek
  13. When I told a RD about this exact scenario, her reponse was, "What do you want me to do, take away a rating he doesn't have?" USPA picks and chooses if and when they do anything about BSR violations. Derek
  14. No one waited for their Cypres to fire before Cypres's were around. Being capable of pulling and waiting for your Cypres to fire is new. Derek

I have no idea why they didn't pull, there couldbe so many different reasons that to throw one or two of them out wouldn't be fair to the dozens of others that are equally possible. No, that is the desired level of reliance, when back up devices only come into play after a human failure. It is a mindset more than anything. A way of thinking about back up devices and your role in saving yourself. Jumpers need to ask themselves few questions; 1) Do I jump differently because I have/don't have an AAD? 2) Do I rely on my altimeter(s) to tell me when to pull or does my altimeter(s) simply confirm what my eyes are telling me? 3) Am I prepared for an altimeter failure? 4) Is there any doubt in my mind that I will save myself barring an incapicating incident (shoulder dislocatioon, collision, medical issue, etc)?   16. You misunderstand. I have said several times that it is a good thing to have an AAD in your rig. I NEVER said take it out to prove that you would jump without it. I did say do not make a skydive that you wouldn't make if you didn't have an AAD. So far you are the only one that is reading into my posts that I am challenging anyone to take their Cypres out of their rigs. To make it clear, I am not suggesting/challenging/hinting for anyone to remove their AAD. Derek
  17. Are you saying you'd be OK with a jumper that cutaway and let theor RSL or AAD activate their reserve for them or just didn't pull at all and let their AAD fire and save them? Derek
  18. Good and I agree with you. Some people skydive as if they do have a Cypres though. I do think that if someone won't jump if they don't have a Cypres must realize that it may not work. It can increase your safety, but it may not. Derek
  19. I am not hassling people, just pointing out that most DZ's have false/misleading advertising on their web pages, including one that you maintain. "Can't we all get along"? How about can't we all follow the rules and do what is right? And the other claims? False, right? Derek
